wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

@DrBlackbird

Going by the OP’s postings, it seems they’re upset because they bought branded jeans special to them. So it would be upsetting to have them marked up / damaged so soon after buying them. Especially if you don’t normally buy branded. And no, you don’t expect a dog to jump up that hasn’t jumped before.

Jesus why are so many unkind PPs jumping down the OP’s throat. I mean going out of your way to be unkind. Going on about the dog. Being patronising and sneering about the jeans not being special or fashionable. That comment is unnecessary and is one of the cruellest I’ve seen on MN. Hopefully the OP has long gone from this thread.

Because she asked for full price money without even knowing the actual damage, because it made the jeans less special? Perhaps that's why?
DrBlackbird · 23/01/2022 09:37

Baba Maybe, but quite a lot of these comments are absolutely going for the jugular. Not just telling the OP YABU, but savage and way out of proportion as response to someone distressed about potentially ruined clothing.

I took away that OP felt pleased about getting a good deal on a branded product that she normally couldn’t afford to buy. Which was she was so upset about them being potentially ruined.

Yes, maybe her response was OTT to the MiL. Clearly no one here has ever over reacted Hmm

Still seems vile in how PPs delight in saying it wasn’t a good deal, the product isn’t special, mocking over the dog etc. 30 pages of comments… just why do so many feel the need to be so snarky? 🤷🏻‍♀️

@HRMtheQuern

All these people making assumptions based on one snippet of my life? We're not poor, we just don't buy branded clothes When you don't spend money, you have money If you have a tenner, and you only spend £3 of that, you've got £7 of that left. But the person who spends all £10 has 0. They're special to me because for once I got a deal without having to spend loads more than I usually would I was just disappointed that something I bought new could've been damaged. I had said in my OP I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. I think you'd at the very least complain to yourself too if something you bought new was marked in not much time. Maybe complain to a partner or friend as well. As suspected the jeans came out fine with a bit of white thread showing through. I didn't expect this to blow up
Unfortunately there are trolls on Mumsnet too. I hope you get some money for your jeans x
AppleJane · 23/01/2022 09:55

@Boysgrownbutstillathome I've read the full thread but assume you haven't?

How much money should the MIL give the OP when she's already admitted to washing them and they're not damaged?

Michelle2409 · 23/01/2022 10:06

OMG there are bigger things to worry about in life that a little scratch on some jeans. So precious. Maybe you should stay away from people. And their pets. YABU

fucketyfuckwit · 23/01/2022 10:10

I would only expect to replace something that was beyond repair.

I'm not over compensating you for some over expensive jeans because they no longer feel special to you.

Are you on glue?

angieloumc · 23/01/2022 10:14

Oh they're pretty ugly jeans. However, they do have them in your size.

chanidoll · 23/01/2022 10:26

The dog owner should offer to replace the jeans however is a pair of jeans really worth falling out with someone over? Just let it go and wear scruffs next time you go round.

PinkDreamsMum · 23/01/2022 10:39

You might have to take this on the chin if your mother-in law has refused to buy you a new pair of jeans. Use it as a learning experience not to visit peoples houses in your special new jeans if they own a cat or dog.
Ask your mother-in-law for compensation once but don’t persist and don’t go down a formal claim route. The damage to family relationships will be longer lasting and more painful than the damage to your jeans if you do.

Chuck2015 · 23/01/2022 11:25

yeah sorry, did it from my phone. I'll try and move and thanks for flagging, did it from my phone. I disagree though, I don't think you can get more damning than this, it's a continuous and huge rise over a ten year period when they've been consistently in power.

VioletOcean · 23/01/2022 11:25

I’d get the dog to apologise (!), I’d say sorry on behalf of the dog but I wouldn’t offer to pay for a new pair.

daisychain01 · 23/01/2022 11:57

Even if you don't get any money back for the deterioration in the previously pristine condition of your new jeans, make sure you only go round there in future wearing sacrificial clothes ie any garments that you don't mind being snagged by the dog's claws.

Don't wear anything you don't want to risk damage to.

Scottsy100 · 23/01/2022 12:05

Bet your mil thinks you are a CF

Wonderwall80 · 23/01/2022 13:50

Hallelujah! Fuss over nothing. Might have something to do with the 97% unreasonable vote 😜

Bobbins36 · 23/01/2022 15:59

Bonkers. A pair of jeans?

OliveTree75 · 23/01/2022 17:52

This is hilarious

Isittimeformynapyet · 23/01/2022 19:32

Hang on! Why would someone who needs new pants go out and buy jeans instead?

That's like going out for sausages and coming home with a pig!

Are you on glue is possibly the most cringey MN saying. And for using it you lose all credibility.

As if you don't know that some people refer to "trousers" and "pants". Hmm

I'm sorry but the only unkind person here is OP I'm sorry but would you turn around to your mother or father and say you need to pay for my jeans! Common I don't know what kind of son OP has married but do I need to say anymore!? I think we need have show a little respect. Like I said before you could of easily fallen over outside or split a drink on there or got some ketchup .

Would you expect your best friend to replace your bargain jeans,if it was her dog? or is this reserved for mil??
I don't think you like your mil very much.
Why did you go round to her home , not dropping kids off for her to mind free were you ? 🤷

ProseccoOnSafari · 24/01/2022 12:50

FGS!! Where do people even find the time to think something like this through?!? You got the jeans on the cheap - SIUB!! They probably look better anyway with the scratches! Pour yourself a G&T and CHILL! Worse - and I mean worse could have happened!!

notanymore2 · 24/01/2022 13:55

This is hilarious. Please take a step back and realise how properly mad this is. YABmassivelyU
