wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

Turn them inside out, wash. Dogs don’t scratch fabric and mark it. A cat….now that’s different.

Waiting for OP to come back to clarify that dog is actually the animals name and is actually in fact a cat and wants to know if she is BU asking for full price.

Don’t be so precious OP. Have you ever been to MIL house before you brought the jeans? Did MIL only just get the dog and you were unaware the dog would be there? Did you not think to ninja fight off the savage animals before he managed to jump up on you and create the mass of destruction that is a tonal different in your jeans?

If my eyes could roll harder they’d roll to the Bahamas.

DropYourSword · 21/01/2022 13:10

@HRMtheQuern

Well they're in the wash at the moment but I'll take a picture tomorrow
Why would you be washing them if they're so irreparably aesthetically damaged that they need to be replaced?
jelly79 · 21/01/2022 13:10

@mrsm43s would you really return to the seller and expect a refund?? Where would this stop?

MananaTomorrow · 21/01/2022 13:10

If you’ve managed to have some jeans damaged by a dog jumping in you, then they are crap quality.

I have never had jeans where the material has been damaged in that way just a dog putting their paws on me,

NicLondon1 · 21/01/2022 13:10

I personally wouldn't risk ruining my relationship with my MIL over this. It is not her fault, it is not the dog's fault, he was just excitable.... its just one of those things.... I'd put it down to bad luck.
At least you have 2 other pairs!

I once bought myself a beautiful designer cardigan (a rare treat), then left it at a party.... the host took it to a charity shop!!! Have been gutted for a decade about it. But shit happens.

jellybeanteaparty · 21/01/2022 13:11

Always wear that pair of jeans when visiting mil in the future ?

MeatyRvita · 21/01/2022 13:11

Get over yourself and give your head a good wobble!!!

BaileysforBreakfast · 21/01/2022 13:12

Wear a hazmat suit next time you visit MIL, then the safety of your special jeans will be assured.

SoupDragon · 21/01/2022 13:12

@getsanta

Wtaf? Dog. Jeans. Notoriously hard-wearing garment.

What does it matter if they are hard-wearing? The OP says they are damaged (can only take her at her word).

People with dogs that jump on people need to be prepared to cover damage caused by them.

But she doesn't even know if they're damaged as she hasn't washed them!

I have a dog. He's made many pairs of my jeans muddy but never has he "damaged" them in any way. Jumpers, yes. Jeans, no. I expect a wash will fix them.

Spreadingtheword · 21/01/2022 13:12

Did you put the jeans on your house insurance OP? You might be able to claim.

RealBecca · 21/01/2022 13:12

Yanbu to be upset. However I dont think I'd expect her to pay £200 to replace something that cost you £50. Can you ask your BF to replace them to keep the peace?

camperjam · 21/01/2022 13:13

What brand are the jeans? And how big is the dog?

Cuck00soup · 21/01/2022 13:13

So were they bargain warehouse end-of-range jeans, very expensive-with-an-aesthetic jeans or Schroedingers slacks, simultaneously managing to both expensive and cheap?

Mumsnet must know.

Lockheart · 21/01/2022 13:14

So they're not stained and they're not ripped? They're still perfectly functional other than for a mark which you have to look for to know it's there?

Why would you need to replace things just for that? Talk about wasteful.

Fairylightsongs · 21/01/2022 13:14

Otten jeans isn’t a brand I am aware of, but it’s very unusual for a dog to be able to scratch and damage on jumping up like that. Were they coated?

inappropriateraspberry · 21/01/2022 13:16

I have had jeans damaged by a small dog jumping up. Their claw caught the fabric and pulled it. I didn't ask for recompense from the owner! These things happen, could have been a dog, bramble, door handle etc.
You pay the money, you take the risk. Yes, it's annoying they're new, but would you ask for a replacement if they were a year old? I doubt it.
If they're not ripped and are still wearable, there really is t a problem.

Kanaloa · 21/01/2022 13:17

@VelvetChairGirl

I think you are being unreasonable for 2 reasons.

1 you chose to buy expensive jeans when jeans are all the bloody same and things like Levis last the same amount of time as TU from Sainsbury.

2 you choose to go round someones house while wearing them that you knew had a dog.

I would think differently if it was you was walking down the street friend walked past dog jumped up or stranger, but your post sounds like you went round their house or allowed them in yours thus there was an element of forward planning and risk assessment with a known situation i.e a dog would be there.

So we should all just have a special outfit for visiting relatives with dogs since we should expect that the dog will ruin them? I didn’t do that even when I had my own dog.

Maybe it would be better if the relative didn’t allow their dog to jump on people. Ridiculous.

I don’t think the relative will replace the jeans but I’d bear it in mind when it comes to visiting again. I can’t abide by people who think it’s acceptable for their dog to jump on people/ruin their clothes etc.

If a pair of jeans were damaged to the point of being unwearable by a dog simply jumping up at them, but not tearing them (so the fabric was such that it "scratched" when something is dragged across it) then yes, I probably would as that isn't to be expected of jeans and would seem to be a manufacturing error.

But I doubt that's actually the case here tbh, as its so unlikely, so I wouldn't. I suspect the jeans are fine, at most minimally marked if marked at all, perfectly wearable and the OP is just trying to get a genuine pair of designer jeans as a replacement for a fake pair of jeans that she is well aware are fake at the cost of a relative that she doesn't much like.

I'll admit I did do a quick Google thinking there might be a brand called Mostly Otton.

There isn't.

I think she meant cotton jeans?
heyitsthistle · 21/01/2022 13:17

Can't you dye them if they're the same colour colour all over? Sure it's a bit of a hassle but it's a lot easier than trying to convince your relative to buy you a new pair.

Whatisthepointinthis · 21/01/2022 13:17

@GrapefruitPink

You'd have to look at them to see the scratches

I'll just leave this here

🤣
Needrichangemynameagain · 21/01/2022 13:17

Well I would be pissed off too!
When I was dating DH my then future MIL damaged my diesel shirt I just bought a week ago for £80.
She had to buy me a new one.
Sorry but I don’t find money on a tree. She should read the label how to wash delicate clothing. Instead she showed a white shirt with her hubs tear black clothing. It came out dark grey!

cultkid · 21/01/2022 13:18
