wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

Yanbu but I wouldn’t say anything. Similar happened to me but it wasn’t mil but it did create a hole in a new sweater, I was miffed but sucked it up, but would have appreciated the person offering to pay.

@Cariadm

I made a comment which was agreed with and called 'thoughtful and well raised' before it was unceremoniously REMOVED?! On reading it through I still cannot see that I said anything that others haven't said apart from relating a similar personal experience which was handled in a very different way!!
Why did it get removed very strange! People can't face facts that a child had more sense than an adult.

@HRMtheQuern

What I mean is they're selling they'll be selling similar jeans on the original website. But the warehouse I got the jeans from has been selling them massively discounted because they're getting rid of old stock. The ones in the warehouse have sold out in my size. But relative wont want to pay full price

Relative is mil

Bloody hell. I wouldn’t dream of asking. I wouldn’t have the cheek. They are jeans.. not your wedding dress. I probably wouldn’t even notice (too busy cuddling the dog that had come to greet me) and when I did, I probably wouldn’t care. (Especially if I had two other pairs?!)

But clearly some people have different priorities.

Sometimes I think we need a good old honest-to-God apocalypse or something.. to remind some folk what REALLY matter.

But then I love most dogs more than most people so perhaps I would feel this way

St0rmTr00per · 22/01/2022 20:00

OP the size 14 31/32 are back in stock on M&M now if theyre the ones youre after.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/01/2022 20:01

@SirSniffsAlot

It's unfair but the primary trainers when it comes to dogs jumping are other people, not the owner.

Lots of dogs don't jump their owner but jump everyone else because they have learned that everyone (enough people) gives them attention when they do so.

Only when the owners stop focussing on training the dog to stop this specific behaviour - and instead start to get firm with guests/others in the street about how they greet the dog, does this tend to change.

None of which stops the owner keeping the dog on a lead and at a distance when guests turn up. Physical prevention can be as effective as training Smile.

A lot of owners try to stop their dogs jumping up at people only to be told "Oh, it's ok - I don't mind. Come on boy! What a good dog!"

When people undermine the owners training, it really doesn't help.

Not saying OP has done this - I'm sure she hasn't - but it takes three times as long to train a dog if people don't listen anymore than the dog does.

My husband lent a piece of machinery to a neighbour. Heavy metal thing.

When he returned it, he handed it to me and because i wasn't ready for the weight of it, I sort of brought it into myself.

As he left I realised it had put an oil mark right in the middle of a brand new hoody i'd literally just put on that day - cost £45.

Did I invoice it? Did i let him know he'd ruined my top?

Did I hell.

Get some respect. Get some manners. oh and get a life.

These things happen.

@HRMtheQuern

All these people making assumptions based on one snippet of my life? We're not poor, we just don't buy branded clothes When you don't spend money, you have money If you have a tenner, and you only spend £3 of that, you've got £7 of that left. But the person who spends all £10 has 0. They're special to me because for once I got a deal without having to spend loads more than I usually would I was just disappointed that something I bought new could've been damaged. I had said in my OP I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. I think you'd at the very least complain to yourself too if something you bought new was marked in not much time. Maybe complain to a partner or friend as well. As suspected the jeans came out fine with a bit of white thread showing through. I didn't expect this to blow up
I wouldn't pay for anything if you hadn't even tried to get it out in the wash
Cassandrainthenight · 22/01/2022 20:06

@HRMtheQuern I don’t even like most dogs, and absolutely detest being jumped on and pawed, but I’ve resolutely voted YABU.
Among other things it’s not your MIL’s problem that they weren’t supermarket jeans 🧐

Chilesstanton · 22/01/2022 20:10

Get a fecking grip

Liesovertheocean · 22/01/2022 20:11

Clothes get damaged/ruined all sorts of ways, it’s really not something I would dream of asking my MIL to rectify. My MIL’s dog has chewed through several of my kids toys (we do encourage them to pick them up but they forget when they’re staying with us for a few days), it’s not ideal but stuff like this happens. You chalk it up to a accident and move on.

FrazzledCareerWoman · 22/01/2022 20:14

My husband's aunt's french bulldog scratched my Céline handbag, it was traumatic but I lived.

Shewhomustbeobeyed1 · 22/01/2022 20:14

What???! A pair of jeans with a mark on it? Some people pay to maje their jeans look old Hmm didnt you say you bought three pairs? Move along people. Nothing to see here. YABVU

@AllThingsServeTheBeam

^My friends dog scratched my door jamb. When the dog died, I used to stroke it when I walked past. Still miss her, she was a fab dog.^

What-what??

Niknik6 · 22/01/2022 20:35

If you bought 3 pairs, that means that you still have 2 perfect pairs, and you now have 1 pair that will be perfect to wear when you go round to see MIL, as they are jeans you like wearing, but it won't matter if the dog makes another mark on them.
On a wider note, MIL's don't always get everything right, but then neither do DIL's. There have been plenty of instances in the past when I could have made a fuss about something MIL has said or done, but I chose not to, and I'm sure there are things she could have complained at me for, but she didn't. We've both taken the "laid back for the sake of the family" route. That has meant that we have built up a good, strong relationship, and I can honestly say she's now one of my favourite people in the world!

100problems · 22/01/2022 20:36

As suspected the jeans came out fine with a bit of white thread showing through.

In which case, a super-over reaction to a non problem.

Insanelysilver · 22/01/2022 20:39

@DoubleTweenQueen
I’d really like to see that video! What’s it called?

TheJade · 22/01/2022 20:42

I’m really not sure who is being unreasonable here but I wouldn’t have asked for them to be replaced I’m sorry to say

SamSoSer · 22/01/2022 20:44

Wow.... just how special do you think you are?
A relative should pay for jeans?
YABU😂

AppleJane · 22/01/2022 20:48

@AllThingsServeTheBeam

My friends dog scratched my door jamb. When the dog died, I used to stroke it when I walked past. Still miss her, she was a fab dog.

Beautiful tonic to today's selfishness.

Crystalvas · 22/01/2022 20:51

@ExtraOnion

All the mad dog owners will be on soon, telling you that you should be grateful that the dog jumped up on you …
Grin
Bywayofanupdate · 22/01/2022 20:53

Surely you don't wear your best jeans to a house with a dog? Yabu

LadyPropane · 22/01/2022 20:53

This is one of those situations where I'd quietly be a bit pissed off about my brand new jeans, but I wouldn't dream of actually asking mother in law to replace them.

autienotnaughty · 22/01/2022 20:53

YABU DOnt wear clothes you care about around a dog.

Grumpy1818 · 22/01/2022 20:58

sorry but you need to get a grip, things get ruined its not nice but life goes on.
