wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

@countrygirl99

Stick to supermarket jeans next time. Mine have been jumped all over by assorted dogs, I've chambered through hedges, done the gardening and even fallen over in slimey mud getting the horse in with zero damage. The ones you bought sound a rip off.
I got dragged round a field last week by an unruly field ornament and my jeans washed fine. God know what these jeans are made of...

Although it could be more intriguing with Jerry Springer
ImustLearn2Cook · 23/01/2022 01:39

Wow, I hope this is a wind up. If this is genuine then I hope the op comes to her senses, apologises to her mil for her overreaction and cf attempt to extort an expensive pair of full priced brand new jeans from her.

nalabae · 23/01/2022 02:09

Call the police and have the dog arrested for criminal damage. Might be able to throw harrassment in their too

nalabae · 23/01/2022 02:09

There

Fefifobum · 23/01/2022 02:39

Have you not still got another 2 pair? Who the hell still shops at warehouse anyway?

Isittimeformynapyet · 23/01/2022 02:48

Unbelievable op. You sure know how to make trouble with your family!

Shit happens to clothes ffs

Cheeserton · 23/01/2022 02:59

Why no pictures of the terrible damage?

YABU. It's a close family member's pet. Unless they deliberately sicked the dog on you and it tore them to shreds then you're being very silly indeed. Do you always fine each other for minor mishaps in your close family?

newfriend05 · 23/01/2022 04:50

This is a joke right ..

autienotnaughty · 23/01/2022 06:11

@PriamFarrl

I get annoyed at dogs that jump up with muddy paws when I’m in the park and the owners don’t have the grace to apologise. It’s annoying but it washes out.
My dog has done this before 🙈 I always apologise profusely. Now I make sure he's on his lead so he would only jump if someone came up to him. Then it's fair game, 😂
karenjkayjay · 23/01/2022 06:29

Just wow! Yes you’re totally being unreasonable

morningstar1 · 23/01/2022 07:17

Jeans are meant for tough wear - half the wearers rip holes in them anyway. `you got a cut price pair of jeans and played with a dog in them. just join the human race.

CircleofWillis · 23/01/2022 07:21

Think of it this way:

When you don't wear brand new branded clothes you still have brand new branded clothes.

You had three brand new bench jeans and you wore one pair of brand new bench jeans. You still have two pairs of brand new bench jeans.

AnonPost0320 · 23/01/2022 07:22

Oh dear christ. Yes you're being unreasonable.
If a bird pooped on you whilst walking down the street would you demand compensation for that too?
Logic is don't wear said jeans to MIL.

My MIL has a husky so when we visit my brain thinks oh best not wear black or my best trousers or I'll be covered in hair.
SMH.... some people

FixItUpChappie · 23/01/2022 07:37

It must be hard to be someone who thinks their jeans are so precious and special that they would expect a relative anyone to pay for damages. You take the risk of damaging clothing every time you wear them and leaving the house 🤷‍♀️

Your jeans got scratched. This is just one of life's little trying moments - a little perspective wouldn't go amiss

Livingonthedarkside · 23/01/2022 07:44

Reading this, I would say health and safety based as that’s an answer based on risk (also my area of occupation lol)

Based on risk going round your MIL in a new pair of jeans knowing they have a dog and even if they have not done it before there is an increased chance on a dog jumping on your new trousers, UABU.

However if you don’t like your MIL and want to build some space in your relationship, ask for the money…

FangsForTheMemory · 23/01/2022 08:01

@MrsWinters

What breed of dog was it? If it was a Labrador your being unreasonable; if it’s a french bulldog you should take the jeans back to the shop; if it was a boxer you should send them back to the manufacturer; if it was a Jack Russell you should refuse to go round to your MIL again; If it was a cockerpoo your MIL should only come to yours in future; If it was a collie you should buy it a sheep to focus on so you can run away
I've got a cat. He scratches EVERYTHING.
Bananarama21 · 23/01/2022 08:13

In all honestly op you sound like a nightmare dil your poor mil. You were already wanting a refund before you even checked it had come out in the wash. If i were your dp I be reconsidering the relationship after the way you gone about things with my mother.

Kteeb1 · 23/01/2022 08:18

I'm sorry you feel got at OP but you did ask for people's opinions. You can't really do that and then get upset when people dont agree with you. From your original post it appears you asked for money from your MIL before you knew how damaged the jeans were. And now you have found they are fine. We can't judge why these jeans mean so much to you. However, to cause awkwardness with a relative before having all the facts was unreasonable. I should imagine your MIL feels a bit crap now. I would apologise to her for overacting and take her some chocolates next time to smooth things over.

Chuck2015 · 23/01/2022 08:19

Just leaving this here for those who were saying the other day that all the political parties ‘were the same’ ‘system broken’ etc and especially the person who was scoffing about Corbyn being worse than Johnson.
The system IS pretty awful and the opposition parties all need work but this is what happens when you consistently vote for this particular bunch of self serving and corrupt Tories. I accept this is a whole different version of the conservatives (I’ve never been a fan but they’ve never been thus bad!). Wanted to put some proof here as that thread really niggled me as by claiming the system is broken you’re attempting to absolve yourself from any responsibility and we are all responsible for where we are now I’m afraid, whoever you voted for.

wont pay for damage to my jeans
girlmom21 · 23/01/2022 08:24

@Chuck2015 I think you've posted on the wrong thread but a lot of people lost their jobs in the last two years due to a little pandemic.

Lots of self employed or peoples on zero hour contracts lost months and months of earnings.

It's not reasonable to compare 2020/2021 to previous years in the same way.

DrBlackbird · 23/01/2022 08:33

Going by the OP’s postings, it seems they’re upset because they bought branded jeans special to them. So it would be upsetting to have them marked up / damaged so soon after buying them. Especially if you don’t normally buy branded. And no, you don’t expect a dog to jump up that hasn’t jumped before.

Jesus why are so many unkind PPs jumping down the OP’s throat. I mean going out of your way to be unkind. Going on about the dog. Being patronising and sneering about the jeans not being special or fashionable. That comment is unnecessary and is one of the cruellest I’ve seen on MN. Hopefully the OP has long gone from this thread.

applesapplesapples · 23/01/2022 09:17

You’re gonna make a fuss about your MIL’s dog doing damage you can’t actually see to a pair of clearance jeans? YABU.
