wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

You've got two other pairs!

Deadwould · 22/01/2022 19:10

Omg. You asked your MIL to buy you new jeans because her dog scuffed yours. Have some manners!

Mfsf · 22/01/2022 19:11

Personally and since it’s a relative I think you are being petty over a pair of jeans . If this was a random dog at the park then I could kind of get it but come on you went to their home , you knew there was a dog .

Foquita · 22/01/2022 19:12

I’d be embarrassed to ask MIL to pay fo this and wouldn’t accept money if offered. YABVU

Jack80 · 22/01/2022 19:13

I would be very choosy when wearing something special when I knew that a friend/family owned a pet.

Darbs76 · 22/01/2022 19:13

I have a dog and I’d pay to replace, but I probably wouldn’t be inviting them over again, I’d meet at a cafe or something

BatshitBanshee · 22/01/2022 19:15

Ah, still being precious OP. They're jeans you got on sale and they're not even damaged but I hope they're comfortable because you sound like a complete pain in the arse. Get over yourself.

Deadwould · 22/01/2022 19:17

You were availing of her hospitality. You were in her house. She won't want you back if your visits are invoiced. I wouldn't let you over the threshold again if you billed me for damage to your clothes whilst on my property.

RachaelN · 22/01/2022 19:18

You went to a house that you know has a dog. I've had clothes damaged by dogs before. But I was aware of where I was going. Sounds like you have an issue with your MIL and not really the jeans. Bet it's not the first thing either.

NeverChange · 22/01/2022 19:19

Is your husband aware that you approached him mother for damages on a £19 pair of jeans that weren't actually damaged and just needed a wash?

I would be embarrassed if I did that.

If this post is true, you have got some serious issues. I'm not saying that to be unkind. I'm saying it so you can look at doing something about it.

AccountDeleted · 22/01/2022 19:23

It’s her house and her dog, the dogs probably happy to see you. It’s no different to you dropping something on them just an accident these things happen. If they are very important save them for nights out where someone may spill red wine on them. It’s a hazard of life :)

Queenprawn · 22/01/2022 19:24

As a stylist, can I just say, why didn’t you buy second hand jeans?
The textile industry is the second biggest responsible for the distraction of our planet. 80% of workers are women in poverty paid less than a livening wage.
Yes, you’re unreasonable, surprised the dog came near you, or was he trying to leave.

Ddot · 22/01/2022 19:25

Have the jeans dried ok or are they still marked. It's a shame if their spoiled.

amitoooldforthisshit · 22/01/2022 19:25

you are a CF

Cariadm · 22/01/2022 19:26

I made a comment which was agreed with and called 'thoughtful and well raised' before it was unceremoniously REMOVED?! On reading it through I still cannot see that I said anything that others haven't said apart from relating a similar personal experience which was handled in a very different way!!

Ahardyfool · 22/01/2022 19:27

My friend’s dog scratched my car. Friend lives on a farm. That didn’t fix in the wash. I haven’t said anything, even though I certainly was irritated by the situation at the time. She remains blissfully unaware. She is my friend and actually her friendship is probably a lot more valuable to me than my car when all is said and done.
I’m not wealthy either.

Suepicano7176 · 22/01/2022 19:31

in a years time what will matter most, the jeans or the relationship with your relatives.

Somebodylikeyew · 22/01/2022 19:31

What breed was the dog?

Allycott · 22/01/2022 19:31

@HRMtheQuern

Right, the next person to post a passive aggresive patronising comment will be reported. Because it's largely the reason why I can't enjoy using mumsnet quite so much. I've only ever had cheap jeans not nice ones out of a sale so this was meant to be special for me but thanks a lot.
You can report me for what I am.about to say - you are a fucking fruitcake. You and your jeans are not the centre of ANYONE'S universe.
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 22/01/2022 19:32

My friends dog scratched my door jamb. When the dog died, I used to stroke it when I walked past. Still miss her, she was a fab dog.

Skyyy · 22/01/2022 19:34

Weigh it up

Cost of (heavily discounted) jeans vs damage to your relationship should you persue this with mil.

Will it be worth keeping one in the bank with your mil. You've got the upper hand by the letting it go instead of her wondering if you're petty should you push for her to pay.
She's most likely going to be in your life for ages I expect and there will most likely be future instances where you might do worse damage to her items somehow.

Janus · 22/01/2022 19:34

What I don’t quite understand is do you have 3 pairs of said jeans?? If so what is the problem with one being a tiny bit scuffed? Could you not use these as the ‘everyday’ jeans and save one of the other pairs to wear for a night out etc? I don’t think MIL will have a very good opinion of 1. You asking for money 2. Not even the money you paid but you want her to buy a full price version of jeans that you seem to have 3 of anyway??
Some things are best just left unsaid, ok to be a bit annoyed but I wouldn’t have raised this with MIl, I’m sure she’s done some nice things for you in the past??

EchosMum2007 · 22/01/2022 19:35

Is this a windup?? If not, then you are being BEYOND unreasonable!

mamabear715 · 22/01/2022 19:40

LOVED this thread..

Sudoku88 · 22/01/2022 19:44

Just be grateful you didn’t pay full price for the jeans and put it down to experience. Don’t be so calculating.
