wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

@IDidntKnowItWasAParty

In 1995 my flatmate's cat ran across my lap and shredded my new trousers - now I realise that I should have charged my flatmate for a replacement!

Also, my current cat keeps putting holes in my clothes, the last one destroyed 2 sofas, another peed on the lounge carpet so much that the carpet needed to be binned - who do I get compensation from?!

You gotta sort that cat out 🤣
ArrrMeHearties · 22/01/2022 21:24

Yabu and I say that as an owner of a dog that gets my clothes mucky on occasion

Greenshed · 22/01/2022 21:35

Oh, come on HRMtheQuern , You got those jeans dirt cheap at a warehouse yet you want your MiL to stump up full price for them because her dog scratched them? Yeh, right… Glad you’re not my DiL. 😂😂😂

ThePrionOne · 22/01/2022 21:35

I’d undoubtedly be frustrated. My own dog jumped up when he was a puppy and left a thread hanging on a lovely new pair of (high street) jeans and I was really bummed.

But I would never in a million years expect anyone to pay for a new pair if they were still perfectly wearable, not even my MIL.

Freddie28 · 22/01/2022 21:38

Your choice to go into the property, knowing there was a dog.
You should have washed and waited for the outcome before posting on here. At least you wouldn't be feeling such a d*head for posting in the first place. I feel sorry for the dog and your MIL.

Bangolads · 22/01/2022 21:53

You’re an adult who chose to go into a house with a dog knowing that dogs can be unpredictable. It’s on you. That’s life! It could have been a sharp bag catching on a packed train - what then? It would be nice if your MIL offered something perhaps but I don’t think she’s obliged to. It seems you don’t like your MIL v much and your trying to cause trouble 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sheis · 22/01/2022 21:56

I rarely wear clothes that might get damaged by family dogs, and if I do that's down to me if claws catch material i.e in stretch jeans. My own puppies claws caught threads on my stretch "cosy" marks jeans, I just cut the threads off, now don't show. I think most would take it in their stride, unless very young and strapped for cash.

user5464 · 22/01/2022 22:01

No one would think a cow or a horse should be in control of it's smelly body when it bumps you, I don't understand why a dog should! Dogs are just as trainable as horses for sure, but there needs to be a bit of "I am around an animal here and I need to be aware it needs instruction".

It is NOT OK for a dog to jump up, but allowing that is at least half your fault if it is your leg that was there to be jumped on, and I doubt this is the first time you have greeted this dog is it?!

When a lady I was asking for directions allowed her dog to jump up on my car to sniff me ... that was her fault! ... and had I known that it had scratched my car door I would have charged her for the damage.

I have a dog. I loathe it when people encourage her to put her paws on them - it means I have to spend a couple of days re-training her to keep off my nice yellow (safe at night for walkies) coat !!! Grrr

Fairylightsongs · 22/01/2022 22:06

I’m totally confused by this, ok so you’re wealthy but frugal, and the jeans aren’t damaged, just a bit of white thread?

Confused
saraclara · 22/01/2022 22:25

In future I'm going to ask my friends and family the value of what they're planning to wear, before they visit. Because I can't afford to have visitors who pay silly money for casual clothes that they might ask me to pay for if there's a mishap of any sort.

WhoKnowsProbsNotMe · 22/01/2022 22:27

What the actual fuck 😂 full disclosure I'm a dog person with a dog…however if i’m at a pals who owns a cat and (though im a dog person more than happy to pet the cat) and it does the claw thing cats do I wouldn’t think twice, just as if child that spilled or an even adult who accidentally spilled never in my house or theirs would I ever EVER expect them to pay for a pair of jeans 😂😂 give yourself a shake

KerryWeaver · 22/01/2022 22:27

The jeans may be £180 or whatever but this thread is priceless!

JonSnowIsALoser · 22/01/2022 22:33

@Needrichangemynameagain
You are the OP, aren't you? The same confusing style of writing and exactly the same attitude.

I hope the husband got out of the washing machine without major trauma.

Needrichangemynameagain · 22/01/2022 22:39

@jonSnowisloser
Me OP? No.
My confusing writing because English is NOT my first language so my grammar is poor sadly.
But thanks for pointing it out!

Cinnamonhazelnut · 22/01/2022 22:43

Oh jeez. I got to page 4 before getting bored/my cheeks hurting with laughter.

But Bench? That's a blast from the past. Reminds me of 2001 when low rise jeans were the fashion, and bench sold the hoodies with thumb holes.
Is Bench classed as designer now then? Best dig out everything I bought from Republic, Is Soul cal & Crafted still cool too? Sports Direct might have some stock, check there.

@AmyDudley
Of course centaurs have genitals and have sex. There are classic Greek myths about centaurs raping humans. Most centaurs are not nice guys at all.

Unless the dog is writing this, YABVU

PriamFarrl · 22/01/2022 23:01

I get annoyed at dogs that jump up with muddy paws when I’m in the park and the owners don’t have the grace to apologise.
It’s annoying but it washes out.

Loveabiscuit · 22/01/2022 23:16

Ah my god,thanks for a good laugh before bed 🤣🤣

Hawkins001 · 22/01/2022 23:20

@HRMtheQuern

All these people making assumptions based on one snippet of my life? We're not poor, we just don't buy branded clothes When you don't spend money, you have money If you have a tenner, and you only spend £3 of that, you've got £7 of that left. But the person who spends all £10 has 0. They're special to me because for once I got a deal without having to spend loads more than I usually would I was just disappointed that something I bought new could've been damaged. I had said in my OP I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. I think you'd at the very least complain to yourself too if something you bought new was marked in not much time. Maybe complain to a partner or friend as well. As suspected the jeans came out fine with a bit of white thread showing through. I didn't expect this to blow up
I understand your perspectives and points, I think the issue partly is, because only one pair got slightly marked by the dogs, and you got the jeans at a discounted price, it seemed you wanted the marked pair to be replaced by a pair that would cost full price instead of the price you paid, due to being out of stock, and

to some people, it comes across as omg, a little mark with no rips and you want them replaced at the price for full retail,

That I think has what's surprised a lot of posters.

Kad1979 · 22/01/2022 23:24

Over a pair of jeans? 😂🙄

AltheaVesr1t · 22/01/2022 23:46

My MIL made me a jam sandwich and the jam dropped on my top I just bought from the chazza for £2.50. MIL won't pay me £300 for me to replace it from John Lewis. AIBU? Confused

bloodynamechangethe3rd · 23/01/2022 00:07

@HRMtheQuern

Well I thought it was nice to get otherwise expensive jeans on a sale that have now been damaged that I don't want to pay to get full price because someone elses dog damaged mine
Two things, bench jeans are only sold on M&M direct, and usually they run around £20, the never go above that, the 'saving' is off retail BEFORE the brand was bought by m&m. For £20 you could have had a pair of Stradivarius jeans from ASOS, just an example, which are long lasting and exactly as you described, you could have had the Lola jeans from new look which are £18.99 and look to be the same fit. As do the Stradivarius super high waist skinny.

My point, although doubt you will want to hear it is that bench jeans are not the big deal your making out. Dogs jump up. Don't worry about it. Send the other two pairs back and buy some more 'on brand' brand.
Bench is a throwback to the 90s and not what the cool kids (those of us old enough to remember when it WAS cool) are wearing. Sorry.
