AIBU to think that Boris should resign now?

Seemslikeagoodidea · 11/01/2022 17:45

Today it has been revealed that in May 2020 invitations were emailed to (allegedly) 100 Downing Street staff, for a garden party. This party happened during the first lockdown, when many people could not visit their elderly relatives, even on their death beds, due to the lockdown rules. The email was sent by one of the PM's top people, and stated that people should "bring their own booze and enjoy the sunshine". Today Boris has been conspicuous by his absence.

I think this is the final straw and shows a lack of judgement and absence of moral fibre. Enough is enough - he should resign and if he doesn't do it then his own party should force him to go.

AIBU?

But if we want things to change , if we want a better world for our children then we have to care .

BeMoreGoldfish · 12/01/2022 19:50

STILL people on this thread continuing to gap to understand the difference between members of the public and the PRIME MINISTER!

Still?

Still comparing people going to the beach with the man who set the rules having a piss up in his back garden?

Democracy is dead.

BeMoreGoldfish · 12/01/2022 19:50

Fail not gap Hmm

I assumed that those posters were visitors from Conservative Party HQ?

@Staffy1

I don’t think it makes any difference if he goes or stays. They’re all as bad as each other and nothing ever changes for the better no matter who is in power.
It does make a difference through. It draws a line in the amount of lies a leader can tell. It makes the position accountable.
SueSaid · 12/01/2022 19:53

'And so it goes on. And you, JaniieJones appear to think that kind of narrative is ok in the leader of our country. Dear God, you sound like those blinkered Trump idolisers. You know, the ones who rioted when he lost.'

Oh stop being so dramatic. I'm not a Trump idoliser, Jesus the desperation on this thread is ridiculous. Again he made the right call in July, the right call with omicron, the economy is growing. He has done much right through this pandemic.

He wouldn't have said he was only there 25mins unless cctv could back it up, he wouldn't have said he didn't receive the email if he had as a cursory check could disprove this.

The media want him out and this overblown episode will run for days.

SueSaid · 12/01/2022 19:54

'Still comparing people going to the beach with the man who set the rules having a piss up in his back garden?'

Hmm not comparing per se just pointing out we weren't all locked up in solitary confinement. Y'know..to give some perspective.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 12/01/2022 19:54

@JaniieJones

'He lies continually so I don't believe it was just 25 mins. I'd need cast iron proof of that to believe him.'

Why would he say it if it couldn't be proven. We know the place is full of cctv! of course he'll be able to prove where he was.

Are you serious ? - he has said countless things that turned out not to be provable (because they were in fact lies) - yet you're suggesting he must certainly be telling the truth now? He (and seemingly you) wouldn't know the truth if it hit you in the face.
Cornettoninja · 12/01/2022 19:56

I remember threads on here 'AIBU to report my neighbours who are having a party?' Got shot down told they were nosey neighbours and should mind their own business

I’m not entirely clear on the point you’re making (?) but surely the PM and staff at number 10 should be held to a higher standard than Angela from Cleethorpes breaking lockdown restrictions.

As it goes there was a mix on MN and it’s an interesting exercise to go back and look at threads from that period. They’re all still there.

He has continually lied and broken the law - but that's Ok if people are making money, is that what you're saying? Perhaps you'll be happy when we end up like Zimbabwe under Mugabe?

The only desperation is you trying to defend all of this.
ElenaCouch · 12/01/2022 19:59

To the people defending BoJo:

Would you think he should resign if Y\N

  • he sent messages about the party ahead of time
  • if he hosted a party outside
  • if he hosted a party inside

-if he attended a party when he had covid

  • if he shagged a young apprentice at a party

Any of those? Or would you still defend him with your last breath?

Cornettoninja · 12/01/2022 19:59

I agree @EvaLution. It’s pretty damning in itself that the PM can be so indiscreet and make an enemy of someone capable of this.

We haven’t even got a PM that’s good at being a hypocritical shyster.

Unsure33 · 12/01/2022 19:59

@SmellyOldOwls

I agree that Dominic Cummings has not finished, but what he has done is released these leaks so slowly that people have become immune to them. Look how many even on this thread who just don't care. We are just used to being lied on and laughed at by the PM. 10 years ago it would have been unthinkable that the PM wouldn't immediately resign in this position. But BJ is like a turd that won't flush.
No one has answered why he did not dob him in at the time . Why sit on this until now .

He is just as bad in my opinion .

@JaniieJones Are you able to share with us what the Minister Oliver Dowden said about outdoor gatherings at the Downing Street briefing on 20th May 2020.
Roussette · 12/01/2022 20:01

Here we are... a bucketload of lies all neatly packaged to easily understand

TheHamburgler · 12/01/2022 20:01

I see the bookies now have him odds-on to resign this year.

He’s been fairly Teflon in the past, but its hard to shake the sense he’s now done.

22itsallnew · 12/01/2022 20:02

@Thedogscollar

He still didn't actually apologise excusing it as a working do.Angry

The party's over Bojo. If he had a shred of decency he would resign but he won't. How anyone can defend this man is beyond my comprehension. His actions are indefensible. He is a despicable man.

It's clear why he didn't think Cummings and Hancock's lockdown transgressions were resignation matters

He's totally shameless. A moral vacuum in the centre of Government.

merrymouse · 12/01/2022 20:03

He has done much right through this pandemic.

Really?

Everything was executed by other people and from what he has said today he never knew what the rules were anyway.

We do know that he has had to take out loans/take bribes to finance outrageously expensive wallpaper in a flat that he may not occupy at the end of the year.

Why would you think he is more competent in other areas of his life?

lonelyplanetmum · 12/01/2022 20:04

publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201719/cmcode/1882/1882.pdf

The actual rules of conduct for MPs including the prime minister.
We could play bingo spotting the rules he's broken. In fact perhaps more fun to try and find the ones he hasn't?!

Cornettoninja · 12/01/2022 20:07

It's clear why he didn't think Cummings and Hancock's lockdown transgressions were resignation matters

It also explains a lot of DC’s arrogance a few days later at that press conference.

wonderstuff · 12/01/2022 20:09

I felt the apology sounded like ‘I’m sorry but I honestly thought I’d get away with it’

He’s lost several jobs as a result of his lies and inability to take responsibility for his actions. I don’t understand how he ever got elected. He absolutely has to go.

@JaniieJones my Mum was in solitary confinement after losing my Dad , her husband of over 40 years in Nov 19. Support bubbles were not allowed until June20.. Y'know...to give some perspective.
Cornettoninja · 12/01/2022 20:10

@wonderstuff BJ got elected because brexit was like an aerosol repellant to any sane politician. Nobody wanted to be associated with it.
