AIBU to think that Boris should resign now?

Today it has been revealed that in May 2020 invitations were emailed to (allegedly) 100 Downing Street staff, for a garden party. This party happened during the first lockdown, when many people could not visit their elderly relatives, even on their death beds, due to the lockdown rules. The email was sent by one of the PM's top people, and stated that people should "bring their own booze and enjoy the sunshine". Today Boris has been conspicuous by his absence.

I think this is the final straw and shows a lack of judgement and absence of moral fibre. Enough is enough - he should resign and if he doesn't do it then his own party should force him to go.

This must be just about the most one-sided party politics poll that Mumsnet has seen.

Roussette · 12/01/2022 21:47

Yes. Nearly 1,600 votes on the poll. 94% agree this is the last straw.

Good example of how it’s easy for anyone to forget what was going on. Covid 19 did not arrive in the UK until January 2020.[/quote]
@LuisM I didn't say Covid was the cause of death. You are either incredibly rude or have never suffered a bereavement. Bereaved people take time to adjust to life alone, the loneliness was only amplified by the incredibly strict first lockdown. No bubbles were allowed.

velvetvixen · 12/01/2022 21:52

Why has this come out now? What awful thing is being buried?

derxa · 12/01/2022 21:52

@TheHamburgler

We're heading out of it.! Omicron has peaked there won't be any new restrictions. It's old news and people need to look forward. Hopefully, but what’s to say there isn’t a more serious variant around the corner?
You would just love that wouldn't you. Please let it stop
LusiM · 12/01/2022 21:52

Indeed, I have lost both my parents. I’m sorry I did not understand what you wrote. I thought lockdown (where I live, the UK) only began in March.

Alexandra2001 · 12/01/2022 21:55

@22itsallnew So Sorry for all concerned Flowers

People forget that loss carried on affecting people regardless of CV and that toll.

Not being able to be with a loved one and/or suffering alone as one grieves must have been unimaginable.

Likkleredridinghood · 12/01/2022 21:56

Lets ask @JaniieJones what her attitude would be if it was Corbyn or Starmer in power and they had behaved in the same way. I'm sure she would be equally magnanimous Hmm

Notonthestairs · 12/01/2022 21:57

I think @22itsallnew point was that her parent was adjusting to widowhood and being in lockdown made that harder.

I think if you have to resort to "lockdown lover" type name calling you've lost any argument.

The government imposed the lockdown, frightened and threatened people in staying inside for the nations good - whilst throwing parties behind police protection.

Alexandra2001 · 12/01/2022 21:58

Wasn't it all deemed non newsworthy back then? thats what either Ch4 or Sky reported.. Williamson had a party and no one really cared as he owned up immediately, so no one thought it was worth running with...... then they did and more came out!

i don't think there is any conspiracy.

It’s not party politics. It’s about integrity

Corbyn or Starmer in power Grin

I would say the same, ill judged workplace event. Apologised for, now move on.

Roussette · 12/01/2022 22:05

Why do you say 'move on' when there's an enquiry pending and the Met are supposed to be investigating. The Government aren't moving on, even if you are.

ShalimarEDP · 12/01/2022 22:05

@Roussette Mumsnet is not representative though.

He will cling on until he's kicked out, the man has no moral compass and thinks only of himself.

That quote from 1982 is brilliant, he certainly had the measure of him

PartyOnKale · 12/01/2022 22:06

Workplace event or boozy party.
Judging by the (top secret!) invitation I think boozy party sounds more accurate.

MrsGinnyM · 12/01/2022 22:06

Yes, he should resign, but I would prefer it if he, the man who sent the email and all those 30 or so people who attended the party were sacked and faced police action. The 70 or so people who received the email and did not attend but did not report it should be disciplined.

I realise all the possible replacements come with their own major faults, but at least they aren't Boris Johnson. I'm sure one of the first things they do will be to get rid of those dreadful and offensively expensive decorations in the flat.

SueSaid · 12/01/2022 22:06

'Nearly 1,600 votes on the poll.'

It's hardly representative of the nation is it, 1600 people I mean seriously.

Flowertailbird · 12/01/2022 22:07

Taking advice from @JaniieJones to move on. No thanks.
