AIBU to think that Boris should resign now?

Today it has been revealed that in May 2020 invitations were emailed to (allegedly) 100 Downing Street staff, for a garden party. This party happened during the first lockdown, when many people could not visit their elderly relatives, even on their death beds, due to the lockdown rules. The email was sent by one of the PM's top people, and stated that people should "bring their own booze and enjoy the sunshine". Today Boris has been conspicuous by his absence.

I think this is the final straw and shows a lack of judgement and absence of moral fibre. Enough is enough - he should resign and if he doesn't do it then his own party should force him to go.

AIBU?

How that man can sleep at night knowing how much he has taken the absolute piss and made mugs of us all is beyond me.

Oh he sleeps just fine.

Did anyone honestly think at the beginning of all this, he would be any different?

Seemslikeagoodidea · 11/01/2022 18:08

@onlyconnect

What I feel most disgusted by is how he handled the previous wind and cheese allegations, knowing that this had taken place too.
Yes, it was all played down, it was painted as a few work colleagues having for a glass of wine outside, an impromptu get together. Whilst he was downplaying this story, it must have been in his mind that the other, much bigger, pre-organised party would eventually come to light.

The only thing I can think of in defence of these parties is that the garden at Downing Street is probably large enough for people to socially distance, but even that defence falls down when you consider that apparently 100 people were invited. How large would the garden need to be for so many people to maintain social distance? The public had all sorts of rules to follow, limiting how many could meet up outdoors (rule of 6?), and vaccines were not available. Boris had recovered from Covid and spoken about how ill he had been, how he had needed oxygen and it had been touch and go, he gave the impression that he was taking the virus very seriously after his brush with death. Yet it seems he didn't seem concerned about partying through a pandemic, and putting his colleagues at risk.

I watched a DUP MP speaking in parliament about the death of his MIL today, and he broke down when he spoke of her dying alone. Many others have suffered similarly. I think this is the final nail in the coffin for Johnson's premiership.

@Flowertailbird

How that man can sleep at night knowing how much he has taken the absolute piss and made mugs of us all is beyond me. I knew he was laughing at us but to actually see him do it in an interview!!! . The number of people I have heard in tears over being separated from their loved ones, often dying loved ones, when he was partying has made me hate him even more. The man needs to be sacked and not given the chance to resign.
This...absolutely this. The man is a disgrace to the office.
Lacedwithgrace · 11/01/2022 18:10

YANBU. I understand he wouldn't want to resign this time last year (though I wish he had) but as we seem to be getting nowhere with covid and nothing else he's doing is positively effecting anyone but his cronies, he can kindly fuck off. It would be nice to see Angela Rayner as PM or at least in the running.

BellaChagall · 11/01/2022 18:11

Just owning up to it would be a start. He thinks we're fools.

Cornettoninja · 11/01/2022 18:12

@llanwrst2

I'd prefer an arrest and criminal charges, but resignation would be a step forward. The next Tory leader will at least do the job full time and might treat women better than the misogynist.
I think this is a frying pan/fire situation. Even getting rid of everyone in the current cabinet doesn’t solve the very deep rot within the tories. I can’t think of a particular reformist waiting in the wings.

Given this is it until the next GE I’m happy to give into spite and hope Boris loses his fancy wall paper and takes that despicable man Rees-Moggs down with him. If Priti gets pulled under too that’d be great.

Notonthestairs · 11/01/2022 18:13

I think just answering the question regarding the party would be a good start.

codexa · 11/01/2022 18:16

He won't be going anywhere unless and until the Tory Party decides to oust him. That is how he has survived scandal after scandal so far.

Say a lot about the integrity of the Tories doesn't it?

ilovesooty · 11/01/2022 18:16

Of course he should but he won't.

I'm just waiting for the "Corbyn would have been worse" posts.

MissMaple82 · 11/01/2022 18:16

Absolutely, he's a disgrace in every way possible, he's an embarrassment to England.

He seems to lie very easily, when it suits him, but it's hard to see how he can lie his way out of this situation. He is a liability to his party and his dubious charm seems to have worn thin with many people. He is a joke, but no one's laughing anymore.

Today's revelation is the ninth party held during a lockdown.

He hasn't just broken rules, they all broke the law.

Now they are trying to blame the man who issued the invitation as though BJ's not personally responsible.

He absolutely won't resign. Like Cummings, they really do believe we are thick proles they are superior to and they are above the law. I despise them.

OldaRailer · 11/01/2022 18:20

I think if you're normal(ish) it is often a surprise how badly behaved people at the extremes can turn out to be.

Wagsandclaws · 11/01/2022 18:22

I said this this morning when the news broke.

The fact he has remained silent today say it all. He won't go, mores the pity ( understatement of this year so far ) .

onlychildhamster · 11/01/2022 18:24

I don't think he should resign. He should lead the Tory party in the next election. Best way to finally get them out.

Cam77 · 11/01/2022 18:25

He was elected by his party who knew what kind of leader/person they were electing to the highest office. Kicking him out is the very least they should do. Such is the abuse and contempt of public trust by this government, that really we need a General Election right now. Worst British government ever led by the worst PM ever.

For those commenting on Johnson's smirk yesterday,my daughter introduced me to a term of never heard, Dupers Delight. It's that person to a T.

rosie1959 · 11/01/2022 18:26

I suspect if this is found to be true he will have to resign
This Email if it is authentic was leaked now for a reason Boris has become a liability. Who will take over my bets on Rishi Sunak

Yes!
Malariahilaria · 11/01/2022 18:29

He won't resign. Nor will the tory party take him down. Like trump he could literally take a dump in the street in broad daylight and nothing would happen. He knows this, his mps know this. There is no credible successor, and no credible opposition (unless Kier sacks off momentum and TRAs), so here we are.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 11/01/2022 18:29

@KurtWilde

He should, but he won't. This will get chalked up as one more naughty schoolboy misdemeanour and that'll be that. As always.
Unfortunately I agree.
Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 11/01/2022 18:29

Johnson will never resign because he is an utter reprobate with no moral compass.

He will only be fired by the Tory party when they decide he's become so toxic that Labour might get in.

MadeOfStarStuff · 11/01/2022 18:30

He should have resigned about a thousand times since he became PM so I’m not holding my breath.

It’s a long time til the next election. He’ll be hoping people will forget that he held illegal garden parties while thousands of people couldn’t hold their loved ones hand as they died.

^This! Absolutely and completely this.

He should stay and make the Tories completely unelectable.
