AIBU to think that Boris should resign now?

Seemslikeagoodidea · 11/01/2022 17:45

Today it has been revealed that in May 2020 invitations were emailed to (allegedly) 100 Downing Street staff, for a garden party. This party happened during the first lockdown, when many people could not visit their elderly relatives, even on their death beds, due to the lockdown rules. The email was sent by one of the PM's top people, and stated that people should "bring their own booze and enjoy the sunshine". Today Boris has been conspicuous by his absence.

I think this is the final straw and shows a lack of judgement and absence of moral fibre. Enough is enough - he should resign and if he doesn't do it then his own party should force him to go.

AIBU?

Excellent one. It sounds very much as if the "wanker" comment comes from behind Johnson, doesn't it?

Thedogscollar · 12/01/2022 18:41

He still didn't actually apologise excusing it as a working do.Angry

The party's over Bojo. If he had a shred of decency he would resign but he won't. How anyone can defend this man is beyond my comprehension. His actions are indefensible. He is a despicable man.

BashStreetKid · 12/01/2022 18:42

@Clavinova

merrymouse I recognise a number of posters on this thread who seem to be rather hypocritical

Yes - you included. Eaten up with rage at Boris Johnson because you lost the referendum vote.

Tell us, are you not just teeniest bit angry with Boris Johnson for constantly being caught out in lies and corruption? Have you read about the recent court decision on the award of PPE contracts?
Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/01/2022 18:45

is anyone wondering why these people thought it SAFE to hold a large party for 100 people??

Probably because it was a workplace and they all spend time in the same building so going into the garden wouldn't have seemed much different

That might wash if it wasn't for the government-made rules barring the exact thing they've done, and the campaign used to justify those rules

But both of those things happened, so either they're so completely stupid that they took a colossal risk for the sake of a get-together, or the bar on get-togethers wasn't necessary in the first place

Either would make them totally unfit for office, but I wonder which it is?

Toblerone20 · 12/01/2022 18:47

Oops no I definitely don’t think BJ immortal…I hope not anyway! 🤣🤣

Bitbloweyoutthere · 12/01/2022 18:47

Does this mean that when the fire drill is set off and we all have to stand outside for hours while they hunt for the culprits, we can now take the edge off a bit?

BashStreetKid · 12/01/2022 18:47

@JaniieJones

'Why do you think Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner are not capable ?'

Oh please. They should be running rings round Johnson but once again Johnson came across as genuine and believable while Starmer wibbles and whines ineffectually and 'yeah but no but Rayner' is an utter embarrassment. She was interviewed raving about all the opportunities she had in 1996 when the Tories were in power. I mean really other than bellowing Tory scum at every opportunity what does she offer?!

I've lost count of the number of people I've come across who don't believe what Johnson said today for one moment - and that includes full-on Tory and Brexit supporters. I think you and Clavinova may be the only people in the UK who thought he was believable, and I'm not even convinced that you genuinely think that.
Peaseblossum22 · 12/01/2022 18:47

I’m not keen on Angela Rayner but dear God she’s an improvement on Johnson. Anyone who was even remotely convinced by Boris Johnson’s not apology today needs their head examined . He didn’t apologise for the event , he apologised if done people thought it wasn’t within the guidelines . The implication being that us stupid ordinary people didn’t understand that special people are allowed to meet more than one other household in their garden. Even if you believe him you would still have to conclude that his judgement, both politically and morally in attending ( and probably suggesting ) such a gathering is seriously flawed.

Johnson has no concept of the truth, he quite simply has no idea what the difference is between the truth and a lie. He opens his mouth and says the most convenient thing for himself . He is a serial liar and has been all his life.

Ye without sin cast the first stone, I love that saying, all the smug luvvies who try and act like butter would not melt ETC, lets be honest over lockdown I bet you all knew someone who flouted the rules, the non mask wearers, the party at my housers, the ones who drive to the beach 40 miles away, on Strava the ones who exercised like 5 times a day WHAAAAAT, yes we all know them and yes Boris is a clown but if he resigns who will replace him , what will we get instead ?, lets not get started on another party coming to power that ain't going to happen, so candidates please lets see bookies favourites, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, Jeremy Hunt or Michael Gove or Donald Trump maybe..

derxa · 12/01/2022 18:51

Why does she put you off ? I've not come across a convincing argument against her that isn't either misogyny or dressed up nicely as 'she is working class'. No not at all. I quite admire her life journey but she has nothing but contempt for people like me I should imagine. And the fact is that she will have to appeal to me as a floating voter

Toblerone20 · 12/01/2022 18:52

Were any of the bookies favourites invited to theee parties or aware of them? Weren’t some pics taken from next door?

If so surely they should be out of the running too, for not intervening at the time?

BashStreetKid · 12/01/2022 18:53

@JaniieJones

'is anyone wondering why these people thought it SAFE to hold a large party for 100 people??'

Probably because it was a workplace and they all spend time in the same building so going into the garden wouldn't have seemed much different.

That would be rather silly, unless they all worked in the same room. When I've worked in large organisations, the reality has been that I've routinely mixed only with my department and maybe 10 others, even in the loos. And No. 10 is a hell of a lot bigger than anywhere I've worked.
the80sweregreat · 12/01/2022 18:54

I wish that the lady employee with the big loud hailer outside my local 'savers ' shop had been at this party back then ; one shout from her and that lot would have been running for the hills!
I was in the wrong queue outside on the pavement back in May 2020 and was shouted at and glared at most robustly.
Boris Johnson or Martin Reynolds wouldn't have stood a chance with her and her loud hailer.

I can honestly say that I don't know anyone who was responsible for making the rules in question and then broke them. Do you? Can you not understand that that is what matters?

You’re getting very very bogged down in this one specific lie, which is what you accused others of doing. The issue is, he’s a serial liar. He lies constantly, he lies when it’s unnecessary to lie. I’m pretty sure that there’s someone in the Tory party who tells fewer lies, why not give them a go?
Bunnyfuller · 12/01/2022 18:57

I find it incredibly sad that some people on here, such as @JaniieJones value themselves and their loved ones so little they are so accepting of the people setting the laws not following them. Surely a leader should be exemplary? We, the population shouldn’t need to argue the semantics of what constitutes a party/get together/social gathering. This government said, on TV that meeting with more than one person outside was not permitted. They didn’t say ‘unless you work with them in which case crack on’. They said NO gatherings.

I know 2 police officers who lost their jobs due to having a family bbq. They got sacked because they were not observing the law BJ told them to enforce.

This week’s news seems to be all about abuse of privilege: this government and their flaunting of their own rules. Djokovic who chose to assume Australia would ignore their laws for him, and also felt ok to attend events whilst he had Covid. And our dear Prince Andrew who is scrabbling desperately to avoid having to answer around his activities re. Epstein. It feels a little bit blue pill/red pill, the mighty really are showing us their true colours and exactly how little we mean to them.

ancientgran · 12/01/2022 18:58

@BashStreetKid

The government aren’t to blame for the pandemic and I believe they have done the best they can and I’m sure they’ve all worked extremely hard

How can you possibly make that claim when you compare the performance of our government to that of other European and Western countries over the past two years, @Toblerone20? Have you ever actually looked at the statistics?

To be fair I think they probably are doing their best, it's just unfortunate that their best is so bad. Obviously when you compare them to other people whose best is better than theirs it makes them look bad.
Peregrina · 12/01/2022 18:58

Johnson came across as genuine and believable

He most certainly didn't. He came across as someone desperately in a hole and trying to be 'economical' with the truth because he knew it was one time he could not risk a bare faced lie.

CorrBlimeyGG · 12/01/2022 18:59

Which idiot thought it was a good idea to put a party political broadcast by the Conservative Party on tonight?

If ever there was a time to shut the fuck up, this is it.

the80sweregreat · 12/01/2022 18:59

If your the establishment or blue blood or just very rich your clearly of the onion your above the the law even if you've made the rules yourself ! You Couldn't make this shit up if you tried really.

I had to turn it over ! :( 😣
AuldAlliance · 12/01/2022 19:02

It's irrelevant really whether you think there is or isn't anyone in the Tory Party competent enough to replace BJ.

The point is that he should resign because he has lied to the public and to Parliament, because he broke the rules he imposed upon the population and because he is refusing to admit it and treating everyone with complete contempt.

If the next person is incompetent, that bridge can be crossed when necessary. Maybe one day people will stop electing a party of incompetents, though.

littledrummergirl · 12/01/2022 19:02

Someone has just decided to seriously take the piss. Who the fuck thought it would be a good idea to broadcast the shit I've just seen on BBC. I was expecting the Conservative party broadcast was to say he had gone, not to show him saying how good he is.

the80sweregreat · 12/01/2022 19:03

The ones asking for their money back on the fines , I really hope they get it !

the80sweregreat · 12/01/2022 19:04

The Tory party bigging themselves up.
Someone has to I suppose.
