AIBU to think that Boris should resign now?

Seemslikeagoodidea · 11/01/2022 17:45

Today it has been revealed that in May 2020 invitations were emailed to (allegedly) 100 Downing Street staff, for a garden party. This party happened during the first lockdown, when many people could not visit their elderly relatives, even on their death beds, due to the lockdown rules. The email was sent by one of the PM's top people, and stated that people should "bring their own booze and enjoy the sunshine". Today Boris has been conspicuous by his absence.

I think this is the final straw and shows a lack of judgement and absence of moral fibre. Enough is enough - he should resign and if he doesn't do it then his own party should force him to go.

AIBU?

'Did you watch PMQ today? He did.'

We must've been watching different programmes 🤣. Starmer and his cackling bunch of clowns did not wipe the floor with anyone.

"Did you watch PMQ today? He did."

Yes he did.

Roussette · 12/01/2022 18:26

Just insult those on the opposition benches as a point of argument... rightio
Bit feeble that...

derxa · 12/01/2022 18:27

Why do you think Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner are not capable ? I don't mind Keir Starmer but Angela Rayner puts me off completely.

I said SHE.

I'm well aware that Angela Rayner did not 'do' PMQ's today. She has in the past and she was excellent.

So sorry that, once again, you can't read simple English.

justasking111 · 12/01/2022 18:28

No axe to grind here we're run by Drakeford so Boris doesn't affect us that much.

Our statistics are truly appalling, Wales the worst in Europe all summer, you cannot blame the government for that either

Why does she put you off ? I've not come across a convincing argument against her that isn't either misogyny or dressed up nicely as 'she is working class'.
BashStreetKid · 12/01/2022 18:29

The rules related to meeting more than one other person in a public place. The garden of No.10 is not a public place. That, I am afraid, is what Johnson will rely upon.

Not at that time. We could only meet one other person from outside our households provided it was in a public place. If he thought he could rely on that, he would have produced it already.

Roussette · 12/01/2022 18:29

Oh FFS.... a Conservative Party Political Broadcast right now with Johnson and his lies.
It's put me off my tea.

BashStreetKid · 12/01/2022 18:30

@justasking111

Rishi was unable to make the commons today he was in Devon. ROFLMAO . He's been invisible for ages now.
That has distinct echoes of John Major keeping well out of the way when Thatcher was toppling. Interesting ...
SueSaid · 12/01/2022 18:30

'If you watch her at PMQ's she decimates Johnson. Destroys him totally'

She really doesn't. Bellowing is not 'decimating'.

I feel embarrassed for her tbh, someone at that level should be professional, able to debate powerfully without sneering, shouting and sniggering. She should take some pointers from Penny Mordaunt, who as an aside did in fact 'decimate' Rayner in the HoC once, Google it, it's quite funny.

WindyState · 12/01/2022 18:31

@JaniieJones

'Why do you think Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner are not capable ?'

Oh please. They should be running rings round Johnson but once again Johnson came across as genuine and believable while Starmer wibbles and whines ineffectually and 'yeah but no but Rayner' is an utter embarrassment. She was interviewed raving about all the opportunities she had in 1996 when the Tories were in power. I mean really other than bellowing Tory scum at every opportunity what does she offer?!

"Genuine and believable"

GrinGrin

10/10.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/01/2022 18:32

Resigning enables him to avoid accountability for the absolute chaos they have created

Very true, but then so does staying because he can control who does the investigating

Is anyone wondering how it could be that people in No.10, who were privvy to all kinds of data, statistics, science etc. that we are not - is anyone wondering why these people thought it SAFE to hold a large party for 100 people??

Yes, I made the same point earlier just as I have on other threads
It's never been answered, just as it hasn't this time, so I can only think that folk aren't keen on the implications

Eh? To who?

Roussette · 12/01/2022 18:32

She is very good, and I bet Johnson is bricking it when he's faced with her. She knows her stuff.

Johnson doesn't sneer, snigger or shout?

He does. All the time.

AuldAlliance · 12/01/2022 18:34

@Toblerone20

Pumperthepumper but apparently for many people that is the issue….it’s like everyone has lost sight of why these restrictions were introduced in the first place.

I’m pretty sure we already had evidence of his immortality long before he was voted in. I fully expect most humans are capable of immortality maybe not as much as Boris but it’s a human trait.

The ironic thing is that everyone is getting distracted by this and overlooking the fact there’s clearly some very immoral people behind these leaks who are trying to drive the sheep in a particular direction.

I've missed something along the way: since when have all humans been immortal, and BJ more than most?
merrymouse · 12/01/2022 18:34

I feel embarrassed for her tbh

Really?

Because from what I hear, the main defence of Johnson is that he so is deeply stupid that he couldn’t possibly be expected to follow his own rules.

That seems far more embarrassing.

SueSaid · 12/01/2022 18:34

'is anyone wondering why these people thought it SAFE to hold a large party for 100 people??'

Probably because it was a workplace and they all spend time in the same building so going into the garden wouldn't have seemed much different.

IHateCoronavirus · 12/01/2022 18:34

I’m just delighted that we can all take booze to work (and our non-work related romantic partners) and claim we thought it was a ‘work event’. Parent’s evenings are going to be a ball!

BashStreetKid · 12/01/2022 18:35

@Toblerone20

It’s utterly tragic that people died alone but do you not understand why that was, why the NHS needed to be protected?

Hard decisions had to be made and if they weren’t I think many more people would have died.

None of this is about individual cases however tragic and sad they are, it’s about protecting the entire population and the country as a whole.

It’s obviously such an emotive issue that people can’t see reason.

I think it may be that it is you who are missing the point here, @Toblerone20. I think everyone criticising Johnson about this is very aware of why the rules were made, which is why they think he should have obeyed them
the80sweregreat · 12/01/2022 18:36

If I showed up with alcohol from ' cost cutters' at work I'd be very swiftly shown the door!

MaternityNurse007 · 12/01/2022 18:37

Agree, want him and his entitled ass out of there ASAP

BashStreetKid · 12/01/2022 18:37

@SmellyOldOwls

Lied to not lied on. I do not want BJ to lie on me that would be a step too far
Grin. Reminds me of that quote about having sex with Nicholas Soames, which was apparently like having a wardrobe fall on top of you with the key sticking out.
Seemslikeagoodidea · 12/01/2022 18:38

@22itsallnew

Boris Johnson isn't sorry about Covid lockdown breach. He's sorry he got caught – Ian Murray MP

Exactly this

Yes, he made a forced apology and is playing for time. Things might be different if he'd owned up weeks ago, said something along the lines of "We bent/broke the rules, it was wrong and I'm sorry. At the time the people involved were all mixing together daily at work, and the parties took place outside, so we felt the infection risk was negligible. However, it was wrong of us to make exceptions to the rules, and I'm sorry."

Looking at the reaction of MPs in the commons today, many people are feeling that he has crossed a line and he has to go. BJ looked like a haunted man at times - he can no longer escape the spectre of his misdeeeds and lies.

Evenings? Why not during the school day? Remember ‘if there’s wine it’s work’.
