To be saddened, and yet also angry, that the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Reunion show totally blanked JK Rowling?

I mean, she did create the bloody thing! Hmm

Just watched it. 100 minutes of the young cast who were the main characters (Harry, Ron, Hermione, Malfoy, Neville Longbottom, The Weasley brothers, etc,) gushing over one another. Laughing and hugging and kissing, and reminiscing and brushing tears from their cheeks, as they whispered 'we're family... always have been, always will be.......'

Not ONE mention of the woman who created it all, and gave them the lives they have now. In fact many people were interviewed, including Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Gary Oldman, Robbie Coltrane, Bonnie wright, Alfred Enoch, Toby Jones, Mark Williams, Jason Isaacs, etc. Not ONE of them mentioned JK Rowling.

All we got featuring JK, was two 10 to 15 second clips of footage from an interview she did 3 years ago. The narrator mentioned her ONCE! That's it! None of the 'stars' mentioned her, or thanked her for ANYthing. As I said, Harry Potter exists because of HER. Yet she was not deemed worthy of a mention or a thank you.

AIBU to think it's sad and also bloody infuriating, that she has been blanked in this manner? IMO, it's clearly because of the accusations of her being 'transphobic,' (which I don't think she is frankly,) and I am dismayed and somewhat disgusted, that these young people whose careers exist because of JK Rowling, are now treating her like a pariah.

I am a huge fan of Harry Potter, both the books and the films, and this has sullied it all for me now.

I’m watching it now - I’m 10 mins in and she’s been mentioned 5+ times and they are showing footage of her from 2019 interviews. Hardly blanking!
@CalishataFolkart and no where in that shows that it is anti-Semitic. In fact if Jewish is the first thing that pops in your head when you read that, I'd suggest it's yourself whose anti-Semitic.
I can see a parallel with an anti-Semitic stereotype. The nose, the eyes, being “clever” being in charge of the banks, but also regarded as less than human.

This is the point I’m making. I haven’t said anything that could be directly quoted as being anti-Semitic but you’re making that suggestion.

So when the gotcha request is, “Please quote what she has said that’s transphobic,” I’m saying it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 08/01/2022 19:08

Also I’m a huge fan and think she’s been treating appallingly - but she hasn’t been blanked her

They can surgically and hormonally alter their bodies so they more closely resemble the opposite sex. They may even do a very good job of it and be very convincing and attractive. It's still an artificially altered male/female body.

Women are not just modified men or vice versa. A body that has gone along the reproductive pathway designed for pregnancy, labour and breastfeeding has comprehensive differences to one designed to produce sperm and ejaculate. And no, the existence of various conditions in either sex that affect fertility don't mean that sex doesn't exist (because I've seen shitheads try to pull this one). Not having functioning ovaries, for example, is a condition that can occur only in a female body.

Why does this need to be explained? We all know this. How can it further a cause if you have to pretend to be thick to follow it?

anon12345678901 · 08/01/2022 19:10

@CalishataFolkart but it's not, please point out the bits that are transphobic. If that cannot be done, then I'd say it's bullshit and her comments weren't read properly.
I'm also not making the suggestion on anti-Semitic, I replied to your comment that had it at the bottom. I didn't read it and think of Jewish people, if I had, I'd be questioning myself, not her.

DrSbaitso · 08/01/2022 19:13

This is the point I’m making. I haven’t said anything that could be directly quoted as being anti-Semitic but you’re making that suggestion.

YOU made the suggestion!

You quoted a passage and implied that it was antisemitic, thereby linking it to Jewish people. Without any cause. There's nothing in there that calls on Jewish stereotypes.

I read that post and had no idea where you were going until you specifically mentioned antisemitism with an overtly ironic statement that isn't even half as clever as you think it is.

Rowling made no such obviously ironic, loaded and clumsy, unsubstantiated statement. She's too intelligent, too good a writer, and too much NOT a transphobe.

It's always "more complicated than that" when it doesn't sodding exist!

FrippEnos · 08/01/2022 19:14

So did she create their fabulous, glittering careers or inflict dreadful actors on us all who would never have got a break otherwise?

IMO she did both.

DrSbaitso · 08/01/2022 19:17

And another thing...The Philosopher's Stone was published in 1997. It really must be VERY complicated antisemitism indeed if it took you noble crusaders 25 years to notice it.

Not everyone read HP, shockingly.
YouSetTheTone · 08/01/2022 19:20

JK Rowling has not said you are only a woman if you menstruate.
If you are born a human female you have the reproductive potential to menstruate, conceive and give birth. Whether or not these things occur, or if they stop occurring, does not alter the fact you are a female member of the human species.
If my female dog is spayed she doesn’t stop being a female dog.

None of this is hard ffs. Why are people so wilfully, aggressively stupid about this issue? Who gains from such epic failures of logic? Because it’s as sure as hell not women..

I don't think these people have ever read anything that wasn't made of cotton and washable at 30 degrees.

Wow y'all just don't get it do you. so so many disgusting transphobic comments here. If I was born intersex and had both male and female reproductive organs and I chose to live as a woman would you tell me I wasn't a real women? Because that's what y'all are saying about trans people.

For those of you saying if you menstruate you're a woman I hope you do not have any trans friends in your life because they do not need trash humans like you. And I hope if you reproduce and your child is transgender you would never ever say such a thing to them.

By this logic if you don't menstruate are you a man? What about people who just never have a period? Are they men? No. And youd never say if you don't have a period you're a man.

I don't think it's the rest of us who "don't get it".
RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 08/01/2022 19:24

No one has said that…try reading yousetthetones post just before yours

You’ve probably just missed it as you were typing

What are you talking about? Anti-semitic stereotypes about Jewish people do not feature 'pointed noses' or 'slanted eyes'? Why would you think 'Jew' from that description? And goblins traditionally are 'clever' in stories aren't they?

If you were born intersex (not a term that's much liked these days), you'd have a variation of development along the male or female pathway. You may be better living as female, and that's your choice, but you would have a sex.

And if you had a difference of sexual development, you'd know how offensive it is to many members of that community to be constantly exploited like this in a horrible and thoroughly dishonest attempt to "prove" that sex doesn't exist. Which is what you're doing here, even as you castigate us for the crime we didn't commit of not accepting a person with a DSD as a woman. Think about it. You're using their DSD to problematise their sex, but you think everyone else is in the wrong for not accepting it. Which we didn't do, anyway.

As for the menstruation crap, we all know not all women menstruate, indeed all women stop menstruating eventually. The definition of a woman isn't someone who menstruates, but someone who developed along that pathway. If you never menstruate in your adult life, that's only a medical concern if you're a woman.

And you know this.

Omicrone · 08/01/2022 19:30

Transwomen aren't intersex though are they? They are male. So why the fuck are you talking about 'intersex?

By this logic if you don't menstruate are you a man? What about people who just never have a period? Are they men? No. And youd never say if you don't have a period you're a man.

Nope, not 'by this logic'. You need to look up what logic means.

Saying that 'only women have periods' is not the same as saying 'only those who have periods are women'.

Nobody in the history of the human species has ever had both male and female reproductive organs, fully functioning, and been able to have children. People with differences of sexual development (better term than intersex, makes it clear they have a medical condition, and they and their families and HCPs prefer it) are almost all clearly either male or female. Now that doctors can do DNA analysis it's almost unknown for there to be any confusion over a baby or young person's sex, even when they have a DSD.

People with DSDs have asked over and over again to be kept out of the gender ideology debate as it's nothing to do with them. Hardly anybody who identifies as trans also has a DSD.

Lollipopslollypop · 08/01/2022 19:34

I haven't read the full thread so don't know if it has been mentioned but Tom Felton refused to condemn her and they tried to "cancel" him for it. He's still attacked viciously on TikTok and Twitter for not jumping on the bandwagon of hating on her. It must make him and others involved so wary of what they say or else they find themselves at the end of another witch hunt with people trying to destroy their careers.

Because these people don't care about people with DSDs. They exploit them constantly, even though the community has a clear consensus that this is offensive. They suggest that someone with a DSD is not properly or fully male or female, itself as offensive as it is just plain wrong, and then think that everyone else is in the wrong for, they imagine, not accepting something they themselves have deliberately tried to problematise.

And even if people with DSDs somehow weren't male or female, it would, as you say, still be completely irrelevant when discussing people who don't have one.

They're trying to exploit people with a variation of development to "prove" that the development itself doesn't exist at all. Dishonest and unworthy.

CaveMum · 08/01/2022 19:39

SkaterChick - No human in history has ever been born with fully functioning male AND female reproductive organs.

From Wikipedia, my bold (you can read the citations for yourself):

”There is a hypothetical scenario, though, in which it could be possible for a human to self-fertilize. If a human chimera is formed from a male and female zygote fusing into a single embryo, giving an individual functional gonadal tissue of both types, such self-fertilization is feasible. Indeed, it is known to occur in non-human species where hermaphroditic animals are common.[19] However, no such case of functional self-fertilization or true bisexuality has been documented in humans.[15][10]”
