To be saddened, and yet also angry, that the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Reunion show totally blanked JK Rowling?

I mean, she did create the bloody thing! Hmm

Just watched it. 100 minutes of the young cast who were the main characters (Harry, Ron, Hermione, Malfoy, Neville Longbottom, The Weasley brothers, etc,) gushing over one another. Laughing and hugging and kissing, and reminiscing and brushing tears from their cheeks, as they whispered 'we're family... always have been, always will be.......'

Not ONE mention of the woman who created it all, and gave them the lives they have now. In fact many people were interviewed, including Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Gary Oldman, Robbie Coltrane, Bonnie wright, Alfred Enoch, Toby Jones, Mark Williams, Jason Isaacs, etc. Not ONE of them mentioned JK Rowling.

All we got featuring JK, was two 10 to 15 second clips of footage from an interview she did 3 years ago. The narrator mentioned her ONCE! That's it! None of the 'stars' mentioned her, or thanked her for ANYthing. As I said, Harry Potter exists because of HER. Yet she was not deemed worthy of a mention or a thank you.

AIBU to think it's sad and also bloody infuriating, that she has been blanked in this manner? IMO, it's clearly because of the accusations of her being 'transphobic,' (which I don't think she is frankly,) and I am dismayed and somewhat disgusted, that these young people whose careers exist because of JK Rowling, are now treating her like a pariah.

I am a huge fan of Harry Potter, both the books and the films, and this has sullied it all for me now.

I'm going to be the annoying target now but, what I hate the most about this 'discussion' is that lines are drawn and hatred used because of one misogynistic prick selling lies because he couldn't cope with a joke he wrote not being funny and also being offensive. He followed up by making a 'I'm a feminist, look how hilarious I find a woman falling off a ladder as I speak to camera because its all about ME'. Why has that yoke gotten so far in dragging people into his "hate them, because I didn't pay the sex workers in that group" and I hate women.

Who and what are you talking about?

Nope. Lines are drawn because Stonewall tried to get the single sex exceptions removed from the Equality Act, and have repeatedly been giving public bodies incorrect advice about those exceptions and the protected characteristics in said Act. This has led to male sex offenders being put in women's prisons, a significant number of women's refuges and rape crisis services refusing or being unable (due to funding constraints) to provide female only services, as well as the more mundane issues around changing rooms and toilet provision.

What GAH said

I’m another with no idea what Rugger is referring to

Pikaso · 09/01/2022 09:31

I agree with you OP, I think it’s disgusting the way she’s been treated. None of those actors would be anything now without her.

Waitwhat23 · 09/01/2022 09:32

I assumed that Rugger had accidently posted that comment on the wrong thread and had meant it for another thread.

In the tournament of houses program- Helen Mirren gives credit to JK in the first line.
She also seems quite miffed that she wasn't included.
Only watched the first 5 minutes though because it was awful.

I watched one episode of this and wondered what HM was doing in it, and why such a gorgeous woman was wearing a giant Alice band that makes her look like she’s going around in a sort of 80s halo. I have nothing but questions — why is the actor who briefly played Lee Jordan bobbing out of a cupboard with commentary? Why would the producers go to the trouble of getting the actual prop sofa Hermione’s parents are sitting on when she obliviates them — and which we see from the back in the film for all of about three seconds — and two ‘fakes’, hauling them all into a studio somewhere in the US and constructing a question about them (that no one got right)?
HappySonHappyMum · 09/01/2022 11:16

I absolutely love how JK stands up for women and girls. She is not a transphobe and having read her articles and tweets I'm not sure how she can be construed as one. I think it's quite clear that it's often women who get attacked for being transphobic and it only seems to be women who get their pronouns and situations altered. I have often heard women being referred to as 'people who menstruate' but never men referred to as 'people who ejaculate'. I see that trans women may be allowed to compete as women in sport - with the biological advantages that would bring. I see that womens awards categories are removed in music. It's utter madness.

You cannot change sex.
Not all females menstruate but only females menstruate.
Some people have DSDs. This is not a reason to allow males into every facet of female life.
That some males feel uncomfortable in male spaces because they don't subscribe to masculinity is not a reason they should be allowed in female ones.
Woman is not an identity, a feeling or a costume.
Lady brain in a male body is not a thing.
Gender should not supercede sex.
Bodies play sport, not identities.

I could go on and on, but the first one covers it all. You cannot change sex. This might make some people feel really sad but the truth cannot be changed or denied.

You cannot change sex.

Oh man it was truly awful. I just managed to catch it. Were they supposed to be super fans because they knew nowt, even the most basic stuff. Anyway, couldn't sit through it.

I like Helen Mirren but what was she doing there? She's an actor. Completely wasted on there.

WandaWomblesaurus73 · 09/01/2022 17:24

There is a tradition of attempting to cut women away from their work. JK Rowling however cannot be cancelled or ignored. There's no magic without her and those actors all know it.

FrippEnos · 09/01/2022 17:44

For those saying that this was about the films and not the books.
IMO one of the biggest differences between this and any other blockbuster film is that this has always been intrinsically linked with JKR.

Whenever HP has been mentioned it has (mostly/mainly) been mentioned in the same breathe as JKR.

And you can't just try and take that away without some backlash.

WatchMyChops · 09/01/2022 19:03

@latetothefisting

As much as I love JKR, I voted YABU because:
  • It's never actually been confirmed whether she was invited to contribute or not
  • She was actually mentioned a lot even if she didn't feature, and none of the references to her were negative
  • As others have explained, the show is about the FILMS not the books/HP world as a whole. Trying to think of a roughly comparable scenario - there was a huge amount of backstage/behind the scene/making of/interviews with the case for Game of Thrones, but GRRM hardly featured - the focus was very much on the showrunners/actors/various show professionals because they were talking about the TV show, not the books

Also not all of the actors you impugn have distanced themselves from her - Evanna Lynch got a twitter pile on (despite supporting TWAW) for criticising the abuse JKR got, and Bonnie Wright specifically thanked her on her instagram post about the reunion show. The main 3 are twats but they're not all as bad.

That’s good to know. Plus, a PP mentioned that Tom Felton didn’t denounce JKR either so it can’t be all that bad. Besides, perhaps as other PPs mentioned, JKR might have chosen not to take part.
ParsleySageRosemary · 09/01/2022 23:19

You cannot change sex.

Not only that, but everyone knows what a woman is - we all came out of one.

Men know damn well what the difference is when they want to force their way into one.

RuggerHug · 11/01/2022 09:03

Grimmer.

BellatricksStrange · 11/01/2022 19:54

@Grapewrath

Also have a lot of respect for Jk Rowling for holding her line. Agree with comments about Emma Watson she is intensely irritating
If only JKR would have actually written Hermione as black, rather than revising her race for the play. The world would have been spared Emma Watson.
Migrainesbythedozen · 12/01/2022 02:27

@NameChanged15729

She is transphobic and I don’t blame the cast at all for wanting to distance themselves from her.
@NameChanged15729 You might want to get your facts right and READ what she actually said. She said trans people deserve protections and safe spaces just as women do. You are ill-informed.
Migrainesbythedozen · 12/01/2022 02:34

@IcedPurple

I hit YABU by accident, but of course you absolutely are not being U.

Those posh twits would be nobody without J K Rowling. And they know it. Or do they?

@IcedPurple You can change your vote.
Migrainesbythedozen · 12/01/2022 02:42

@Lockheart Whatever happened to "when they go low, we go high"?

That's just another way of saying #BeKind.

No thankyou!!

Migrainesbythedozen · 12/01/2022 02:50

@SkaterChick Those 'links' you posted are 'opinion' articles that 'paraphrase' inaccurately what JKR said. They are evidence of false information, fake news. How about you read what she actually said, instead of believing lies and half truths from 'opinion pieces'. FYI, this is what she ACTUALLY SAID:

I believe the majority of trans-identified people not only pose zero threat to others, but are vulnerable for all the reasons I’ve outlined. Trans people need and deserve protection. Like women, they’re most likely to be killed by sexual partners. Trans women who work in the sex industry, particularly trans women of colour, are at particular risk. Like every other domestic abuse and sexual assault survivor I know, I feel nothing but empathy and solidarity with trans women who’ve been abused by men.

See? PROOF she is not transphobic. Those who don't bother reading what someone said, and instead gullibly believe third hand source 'opinion articles' are the ones who are trash.

Migrainesbythedozen · 12/01/2022 02:53

@amijustparanoidorjuststoned

She shouldn't have been so transphobic then, should she.
@amijustparanoidorjuststoned Except, she WASN'T transphobic, maybe you should read what she actually said:

I believe the majority of trans-identified people not only pose zero threat to others, but are vulnerable for all the reasons I’ve outlined. Trans people need and deserve protection. Like women, they’re most likely to be killed by sexual partners. Trans women who work in the sex industry, particularly trans women of colour, are at particular risk. What is transphobic about that?

Migrainesbythedozen · 12/01/2022 02:59

@SkaterChick

If you read the links do have her tweets in the article's.. her actual words.

There's this. Saying that every who menstruates is a women? No they're not.
Trans men are men, and they might menstruate too.

@SkaterChick How is calling women 'women' transphobic? It's a FACT that only women menstruate. That is a BIOLOGICAL FACT. A man cannot menstruate. If a person menstruates, they are not a man. Did you fail biology at school? Confused
Migrainesbythedozen · 12/01/2022 03:02

@SkaterChick

Her response when she was called out for being transphobic. She supported someone who was sacked for saying tweeting that people cannot change their biological sex. Regardless of whether that person had their ruling in courts over turned she still supported them and their beliefs.
@SkaterChick Yes of course she supported them and their beliefs because that person was right all along. Anyone would support that person. It proves JKR is a good moral person who knows right from wrong and supports a wrongly sacked woman. How can you have a problem with that?

Everything you've posted so far has proven JKR is a good moral person who stands for truth and for women and people unfairly sacked. You have not ONCE, NOT ONCE, provided a single shred of proof she is transphobic. On the contrary.
