To be saddened, and yet also angry, that the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Reunion show totally blanked JK Rowling?

I mean, she did create the bloody thing! Hmm

Just watched it. 100 minutes of the young cast who were the main characters (Harry, Ron, Hermione, Malfoy, Neville Longbottom, The Weasley brothers, etc,) gushing over one another. Laughing and hugging and kissing, and reminiscing and brushing tears from their cheeks, as they whispered 'we're family... always have been, always will be.......'

Not ONE mention of the woman who created it all, and gave them the lives they have now. In fact many people were interviewed, including Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Gary Oldman, Robbie Coltrane, Bonnie wright, Alfred Enoch, Toby Jones, Mark Williams, Jason Isaacs, etc. Not ONE of them mentioned JK Rowling.

All we got featuring JK, was two 10 to 15 second clips of footage from an interview she did 3 years ago. The narrator mentioned her ONCE! That's it! None of the 'stars' mentioned her, or thanked her for ANYthing. As I said, Harry Potter exists because of HER. Yet she was not deemed worthy of a mention or a thank you.

AIBU to think it's sad and also bloody infuriating, that she has been blanked in this manner? IMO, it's clearly because of the accusations of her being 'transphobic,' (which I don't think she is frankly,) and I am dismayed and somewhat disgusted, that these young people whose careers exist because of JK Rowling, are now treating her like a pariah.

I am a huge fan of Harry Potter, both the books and the films, and this has sullied it all for me now.

Her involvement in the actual films was fairly limited. She's often commented on it in interviews

Mrsjayy · 08/01/2022 14:15

The only person who mentioned her at length was Evanna Lynch it was all a bit surreal wasn't it ?

bluesky45 · 08/01/2022 14:17

They mentioned her loads "Jo thought this, Jo said that."
Although I did think the lack of interviews with her etc was off.
She wasn't in it as much as I thought she should have been. But she was mentioned more than I expected from things I've read about it.

JanglyBeads · 08/01/2022 14:18

There's been a long thread on this on the Feminism board?

It was surreal! Hardly a mention of her at all, zero involvement in the show, and a few seconds screen time... For the woman who created the entire world of Harry Potter, and gave these young people the careers and lives they have now.

Was she even asked to take part? Probably not, seeing as they are distancing themselves from her, because of the accusations of her being transphobic (which she isn't IMO.)

They're all quite happy to ride on the coat tails of the fame she created for them though.

CorrBlimey do you have a link to where JK Rowling conflated trans women with sex offenders - I don't think I've ever seen or heard that.

RoomOfRequirement · 08/01/2022 14:28

@CorrBlimeyGG

She outed herself as a bigot. You can understand why many of the cast don't want anything to do with her.

(Conflating sex offenders with trans women is transphobic, whatever you 'don't think frankly'.)

Err...quite the opposite. She actually said that rapists are NOT transwomen.

But don't let the truth get in the way of your Twitter fuelled lies.

It was a special about the movies and their cast/creative team and their experiences on set - yes she created the franchise but she had very little direct involvement in the day to day movie making so why should it focus on her?

LethargicActress · 08/01/2022 14:32

I agree with you OP and I haven’t watched it because I don’t see how you can have a decent Harry Potter programme without the wonderful woman that created the whole thing.

It shows the rest of them up as fickle, disloyal weaklings, and I’d much rather like them all.

SkyBlueBlues · 08/01/2022 14:35

@melj1213

Are you yanking my chain?

Why should they focus on HER? Because she created the whole bloody thing. The entire world of HARRY POTTER is JK Rowling's creation. So yes, she should have been 'focussed on' more.

Yet another post on the martyrdom on JKR. Is a kids book/movie ffs, move on. I’m totally with her on the women’s rights stuff, but the obsession on here with finding ways to be outraged on her behalf is getting a bit cringeworthy.

FOJN · 08/01/2022 14:37

Good job she didn't do that then but your comments tell us you didn't read her essay without actually saying you didn't read her essay. I think we can safely disregard your uninformed opinion.

However, 49% of TW in prison do have at least one current or previous conviction for sexual offences so either TW are more likely to be sex offenders OR predatory males are exploiting defacto self ID. I know which one I think is more likely but we're not allowed we'd to discuss it because it would reveal the safeguarding loopholes in self ID.

blubberball · 08/01/2022 14:37

Wasn't she executive producer, and didn't she insist that the films were made in Britain with a British cast? I always thought that she was quite involved with the films at the time.

Mrsjayy · 08/01/2022 14:37

She certainly didn't not compare transpeople to sex offenders that wasn't her point but carry on believing that corrblimeyGG

'Fickle, disloyal weaklings' is an excellent description of these young people who have betrayed JK Rowling and turned their back on her. All in the name of appearing 'woke' and PC, and to appease their woke, social-justice-warrior followers on Twitter...

Yes I think so, she certainly said she had adult actors in mind for characters.

But it wasn't a "JKR special" it was a 20th anniversary of the first movie special.

Should she have been included - of course, and she was in the studio interview bits that she provided - but just because it wasn't all about her doesn't make it a bad thing.

It was a movie special about the movie making process - she wasn't heavily involved in the actual movie process, so why should it focus on her more than the cast/creative team?
