Class difference - if you're posh

Posh people of MN, help me!

I have married into a very posh family. Not titled posh, but public school. DH and his brothers all lovely.

Sister, MIL and SIL clearly look down on me.

I know I shouldn't care and it's their problem etc but I feel so embarrassed when I clearly get stuff 'wrong'.

SIL in particular, will never correct me but quite often say 'I could never do xx, so tacky / common' knowing full well it's something I do! Most recently I have learnt that I say garage 'wrong'.

Wherever we go, they always dress so similar and I get it 'wrong'.

Obviously the easiest tip is not to care, but any advice from posh MNetters would be so gratefully received.

Garage rhymes with mirage, not carriage.

BurnedToast · 31/12/2021 06:48

That's just your opinion.

@Ericaequites

Garage rhymes with mirage, not carriage.
Thanks, good to know,

Garage rhymes with mirage, not carriage.
It depends where you come from. In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and most of England, it rhymes with carriage.

Some people in the south of England say garage like mirage, but that does not make it right, or posh.

@daytriptovulcan

In essence you re just being abused and put down by egotistical people. Beyond that, all facets of poshness are pure fake. Do they live in a 5 million pound house, with holiday home(s) abroad? No? Their poshness is just bullshit. I ve meet oligarchs who are not posh. What you describe is unfriendliness, and probably just the difference between a working class and affluent middle class upbringing.
Since when does a 5 million pound house + holiday homes abroad equal what is seen as ‘posh’? You seem to be confusing it with ‘loaded’, which is not the same thing.

I’m afraid i was exposed to the norm of garaaaaaaaaaage with stress on second syllable when a child. Everyone in my life and all friends said it this way. Cue exposure to uk garridge. Confusions and it remains a bogey word for me.
We did actually have a carriage house during the garridge days and we called it ‘the workshop’ far far safer.
Love garridge music.

Mirage can be either Mi rarge or Mi rarrrge.

But garage is ga rarge. Not ga rarrrge.

HeronLanyon · 31/12/2021 10:04

tatiana whole continents/countries would disagree.

Pensieve · 31/12/2021 10:31

OP there are a few of your ILs on this thread, who are obnoxiously trying to correct pronunciation for the word garage. Really? It’s like any historical institution that tries to exert power and influence by somehow differentiating itself from the masses.

How pathetic and so very last century.

Moomoo75 · 31/12/2021 11:07

The only one to worry about is your husband. He obviously loves you as you are don't change to fit in with his sisters. Your sisters in law themselves behave in cheap way. People with true class would never speak or act the way they do. So head up Gurl you are already a cut above them.Xmas Wink

That’s rather the point.
HeronLanyon · 31/12/2021 11:57

Indeeeeed (big stress on second syllable thete !) 😹

georgarina · 31/12/2021 12:12

They don't actually sound posh. They sound snobby and aspirational ie Hyacinth Bucket.

If they were actually posh they wouldn't care and you shouldn't either - be yourself, don't try to fit in with them. They probably look and act ridiculous. Your ILs would be the ones making fools of themselves in front of actually 'posh' people.
