His dog hogging the bed

I stay at my boyfriends a few nights a week. I absolutely love his staffy. He's a rescue. Well behaved. I often walk him and genuinely love the dog. But he shares the bed with my boyfriend. When I'm there as you can imagine it's a little crowded. He's a solid heavy dog and when he's laid on the bottom you can't move your feet or the duvet. If he's in between us we can't roll over. I rarely can fully lie properly with my boyfriend when we are asleep. I sometimes am hugging him and then my legs and stomach is behind the dog. He also gives you a heart attack leaping back up again if he's got down for whatever reason.

My boyfriend finds it abit irritating himself and has made comments about him taking over.

I feel like I could sleep so much better if I could move where I wanted to be. I wake up with dead legs and achy arms.

Last night we were cuddled up and the dog was laying somewhere else. I heard his feet coming towards the bed and felt myself thinking oh here we go. He was in between both of our legs all night and then ended up on the bottom.of the duvet. My boyfriend was saying how rubbish he slept again.

Just wondered if this is common? I sometimes feel abit grossed out too if he's been out In damp weather and been for a poo and then his wet dog smell is allover the bed.

Hoping my boyfriend will encourage him.to sleep in the bed next to the bed. But I respect that I'm the newbie.

Close the door. Dogs don't have to sleep in bedrooms. Ours come up by invitation only.

Clymene · 22/12/2021 14:19

I'm afraid this would happen if you were my girlfriend. Although my dog will sleep in his bed if I tell him. So that's what your boyfriend should do

SenecaFallsRedux · 22/12/2021 14:20

Our solution was to get a bigger bed. Problem solved.

Strawbz8988 · 22/12/2021 14:20

He doesn't shut him in a room ever. He's his best mate. I'm just a little sick of sleeping with a dog knowing how much nicer it would be without him In the bed.

Maybe present the idea of tango for 2 and ddoggy being an inappropriate spectator?

Think of it from the dog’s pov. It’s not his fault that he’s been allowed the privilege to have it taken away through no fault of his own. I get that you don’t like it- our dog stays downstairs - but the situation has been created now and the question is whether your boyfriend has the willingness to change it gently and gradually.

icedcoffees · 22/12/2021 14:22

My dog sleeps in the bed and has done since he was a puppy. He makes a great foot warmer in winter Grin

I accept it's not for everyone but you're in your boyfriends' home and the dog is there every night, you're not, and I suspect he doesn't want to disrupt the dogs' routine if it works for him the vast majority of the time.

If I found myself single and someone complained about the dog in the bed, I'd not be changing four years of arrangements for them I'm afraid.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 22/12/2021 14:22

Mine gets on the bed during the night but if he's in the way either me or dp kick him off. We have 3 cats and they sometimes join us too. (Can't shut them anywhere or I won't have any carpets left)

NewBeta · 22/12/2021 14:22

Haha good luck with that op the dog certainly knows which side of his bread the butters on 😂

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 22/12/2021 14:23

Oh god l am an animal lover but would hate this!!

Xmassprout · 22/12/2021 14:23

My dogs don't sleep in our bed at night, even when we only had one. I'm happy to share with dogs, but my husband isn't. So we compromised that the dogs are allowed upstairs and on the bed and he is at work, but once he is home we shut the safety gate at the top of the stairs.

The dogs don't seem to mind, as long as at least one person is downstairs with them in the evening they're happy. And they happily take themselves to their beds when they're ready to go to sleep

Strawbz8988 · 22/12/2021 14:24

That's the thing isn't it. I'm in the dogs space. I love the dog but I really don't get much sleep and feel like I'm in the way haha

Tell him to buy a bigger bed.

emsmar · 22/12/2021 14:28

Fuck that! Get him a really lovely cosy dog bed and a nice blanket and put it beside the bed?

Chamomileteaplease · 22/12/2021 14:31

Sounds like a Disney dad but with a dog!

So two humans are getting rubbish sleep oh but that's ok because we wouldn't want to upset the dog! Confused

As your BF is getting frustrated too I would talk to him about having some new rules for the dog. Boundaries are good for pets too Grin.

Enko · 22/12/2021 14:31

Buy a 2nd duvet one duvet each and a bed spread over the bottom Dog sleeps in space between the 2 duvets and you can all get to move.

2bazookas · 22/12/2021 14:33

We have had many dogs, all adored to distraction, NONE of them allowed to sleep on our bed . Ever.

Two of them, reduced bladder capacity in old age, were allowed to sleep on our bedroom floor so they could quickly wake us in time if they needed to go out for a pee in the night. Even more reason never to let them sleep on bed :-)

girlmom21 · 22/12/2021 14:35

Yeah my dogs sleeping in the bed and if you don't like it you can go home - sorry OP Grin

TurkeyRoastvBubbleandSqueek · 22/12/2021 14:35

If you ever move in full-time don't worry .......you'll get used to it 😁

Shoxfordian · 22/12/2021 14:40

Tell him it’s you or the dog in bed

Strawbz8988 · 22/12/2021 14:40

Ahhh haha. I think I'll just have to get used to it. It's just the weight in him. He's so heavy and no chance of lifting him.

OGenkiDesuKa · 22/12/2021 14:41

That’s so gross to have it on the bed.

Curiousmouse · 22/12/2021 14:42

@OGenkiDesuKa

That’s so gross to have it on the bed.
I think that's true.
