So, we were packing up to leave this morning for a long weekend in Wales. Leaving in about 30 mins.
I come downstairs and smell that DP had just put the oven on for a pyrolytic clean. This would mean us leaving the house for 4 days whilst the clean function was running.

My reaction was definitely in the territory of "WTAF you muppet"

DP thinks i was over the top, the clean function shuts down automatically, and i was worried about nothing.

SO help us settle it.

YANBU Leaving the oven on pyrolytic clean whilst you go away for 4 days is insane

YABU You are being anal, i do it all the time, I love coming home to a shiny oven.

I would never leave the house with an appliance going like that. The possible exception being the dishwasher

EveningPrimeMinister · 17/12/2021 12:36

4 days? Ours only takes about an hour. I wouldn't go out while it was running though.

Acrasia · 17/12/2021 12:37

I did mine last week, and although it is true that it does shut down automatically, that doesn’t mean that I would leave it alone. I purposely left it until I knew that I would be present for the whole time just in case something went wrong.

So in conclusion, you would leave the house with an appliance running? Confused

What about the fridge?

BillyBarryBoo · 17/12/2021 12:40

He could have done it any other time. As you are about to leave is the WRONG time

Poptart4 · 17/12/2021 12:40

What is this magic oven the cleans itself and where can I get one Smile

Bushkin · 17/12/2021 12:41

How long does it actually take?

SnarkyBag · 17/12/2021 12:42

He’s a muppet m. Official

wishingchair1 · 17/12/2021 12:43

We had one and the glass shattered all over the kitchen. Second time of using it. I'd just turn it off at the mains switch if you need to leave, then re do it on the return. They heat to a very high temperature.

Carbis · 17/12/2021 12:43

They can set off the smoke detector. I was out with someone once and they got an alert and had to go home to check the house wasn’t on fire. I only do it when I’m at home.

LosingTheWill2 · 17/12/2021 12:43

I would never leave the oven or tumble dryer on while I went out.
Everything else, yes, no problem. Is that weird?

Nope - dishwasher is water + electricity....

I wouldnt

I leave the fridge on obviously, but not the washing machine or anything else

Landof · 17/12/2021 12:44

A self cleaning oven?! I have never heard of this!

I'd have left it on but set my alexa in the kitchen in view of the oven so I can periodically check it. If there was an issue I'd call local friends of family. Because the chances of anything happening are really really low.

I would have agreed with this until my friend's dishwasher caught fire after they went to bed!
FromageRay · 17/12/2021 12:44

To answer the OP though, YANBU! The chances are slim but I'd be too worried to leave it running.

Landof · 17/12/2021 12:45

I had no idea people only used their washing machines when someone at home. I am at work so much I'd never get on top of washing if I only used the machine when at home!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/12/2021 12:46

Don't leave the dishwasher running while you are out. I was once fortunately still in the kitchen when smoke started seeping out of ours, shortly after I started it off. The Fire Brigade recommend not leaving dishwashers, washing machines and tumble dryers running while you are out or asleep. Our dw does sometimes go on late in the evening but we have very efficient smoke alarms wired in.

MrsWorriedMother · 17/12/2021 12:46

No I would never go away for even a day and leave an appliance like that running.
Self cleaning ovens usually emit a lot of smoke so might set off smoke alarm

FissionMailed · 17/12/2021 12:47

I wouldn't leave an oven on on any setting unattended, faults happen.
If I'm going away for a night I'll pretty much turn all appliances off except fridge.
But then I'm wary about even running a washer when I'm not home, it might flood the kitchen.

Whingasaurus · 17/12/2021 12:49

Well I voted Yabu but I've changed my mind since reading this thread Shock

WeatherwaxLives · 17/12/2021 12:51

I'm a bit slapdash when it comes to things like this, I run the dishwasher and washing machine when I'm out, and will even put the oven on to preheat occasionally while I do the school run (10mins total, walking)

But even I would draw the line at putting an appliance on a cycle that is actually supposed to heat to a temperature high enough to incinerate things while I'm not present.

DP is the opposite of me, when we go on holiday I have to go round switching the water back on so I can flush the loo 2 hours before we're supposed to leave, and I have to check he hasn't switched the freezer off (he has form. Twice.)

StrangerThanSpring · 17/12/2021 12:51

I wouldn't leave it running while I was away on holiday just in case something happened. I know it's unlikely, but sometimes things do go wrong with appliances, so it's not worth taking the risk.

ChangeChingyChange · 17/12/2021 12:51

How long does it take to clean could you wait til its finished? Can you turn it off half done? I wouldn't leave whilst it's still going.

Masdintle · 17/12/2021 12:52

Ex Fire Brigade here. Don't leave a heated appliance unattended.
