So, we were packing up to leave this morning for a long weekend in Wales. Leaving in about 30 mins.
I come downstairs and smell that DP had just put the oven on for a pyrolytic clean. This would mean us leaving the house for 4 days whilst the clean function was running.

My reaction was definitely in the territory of "WTAF you muppet"

DP thinks i was over the top, the clean function shuts down automatically, and i was worried about nothing.

SO help us settle it.

YANBU Leaving the oven on pyrolytic clean whilst you go away for 4 days is insane

YABU You are being anal, i do it all the time, I love coming home to a shiny oven.

I wouldn’t leave an appliance running whilst I was away for four days. Fair enough, it’ll probably be fine but what if goes wrong? What if it bursts into flames?

guardiansofthegalaxychocs · 17/12/2021 12:53

Tumble drier, dishwasher I would and do, but oven seems a step too far. Not sure why really! Possibly your DH is right but my instincts are with you OP!

TeapotCollection · 17/12/2021 12:54

I wouldn’t leave it

I too would like to know about this oven that cleans itself

MinnieMountain · 17/12/2021 12:56

For those asking, ours is a Miele. I’m sure other makes do it too.

YANBU OP. But thank you for reminding me that we haven’t tried ours out yet.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 17/12/2021 12:57

My mil switches off the freezer when she goes on holiday. Means weeks of planning to use up all contents (or lots of waste which she also does). She says it is to save electricity but it is really anxiety that it will catch fire.

DH tried to do this in our house but I have told him no bloody way.

Not if I was going away, if I was going shopping maybe, although about 20 years ago my friend had a fire caused by a coffee machine, ( one of those where the glass jug was sat on a hot plate to keep warm,)

itwasntaparty · 17/12/2021 12:58

I wouldn't leave it. But 4 days?! What are you meant to do in the meantime if you were home?

I'll leave the washing machine on never the tumble dryer. Husband gets twitchy about the slow cooker being on 🤦🏻‍♀️

Theyellowflamingo · 17/12/2021 12:59

I’d leave the fridge obvs and I might pop out to a shop with a washing machine still spinning or something. But I would never, ever leave my oven on a pyrolytic cycle unattended - it could set off the smoke alarm, it could blow my fuse board thus spoiling everything in the freezer, it’s potentially a fire hazard… Mine heats the whole kitchen so warm I need to leave windows open!

What a stupid time to start the job.

itwasntaparty · 17/12/2021 12:59

@guardiansofthegalaxychocs

If you are struggling with drug addiction whilst pregnant, being upfront and asking for referrals for support to stop is the wise choice. SS would be involved but not nearly as concerned as they would be if a baby is born addicted.
Wrong thread?
muddyford · 17/12/2021 12:59

My tumble dryer started smoking. It was plugged in and switched on at the socket, but not in use. If I hadn't been in the same room there would have been a serious house fire.

drainitallout · 17/12/2021 13:00

Nope. Ours tends to set the smoke alarms off when we use it so I'd absolutely want to be in the house when it's on.
I'd leave something cooking and go out for a couple of hours, but no way would I do this. Your DP is indeed a muppet.

Cornettoninja · 17/12/2021 13:03

Bloody hell, does he want to leave the iron and a pair of hair straighteners on to keep it company?

Theyellowflamingo · 17/12/2021 13:03

Those wondering about a self cleaning oven - it locks itself shut then heats itself to about 500 degrees celcius thus incinerating any grease or debris inside. Then you just wipe out the ash. It’s very good, but it’s quite a hot and smoky process, I only do it when I’m in and kids are out as the door etc gets very hot and I need the window open. And it doesn’t do the metal wire bits, you have to remove those. I’d still recommend though!

crystal1717 · 17/12/2021 13:04

My ex used to strip the beds before we went away. I still hate him for it, 10 years later

Note the ex bit.

Gonnagetgoing · 17/12/2021 13:04

Never ever leave anything on whilst you're away (or out).

I leave appliances on whilst I'm out but DM has tried to drum it into me not to do it (even whilst 30 min/1 hour food shop out) before. I can sort of see her point but sort of see she's over-worrying.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/12/2021 13:05

WTF was he thinking? He should have done it while you were not about to go out, or when you come back. The fire risk is probably small, but it's something that's best avoided.

Surprised how many people haven't heard of self cleaning ovens though? They're pretty standard and over time work out cheaper than getting someone in to clean a normal oven. Ours is AEG.

Gonnagetgoing · 17/12/2021 13:06

sorry but this made me snigger Grin
DysmalRadius · 17/12/2021 13:06

I don't think the op is saying the clean function takes 4 days but that they are away for 4 days before they will be home to see what has happened in their absence.

MaryShelley1818 · 17/12/2021 13:06

I wouldn't leave any appliance on that wasn't absolutely vital (fridge/freezer).
I'm absolutely horrified people leave their ovens on when going out, such a risk.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 17/12/2021 13:08

They're away for 4 days. The function doesn't take that long Smile
BrightYellowDaffodil · 17/12/2021 13:08

Your DH is a muppet.

When I go away everything is unplugged/switched off with the exception of the fridge, freezer and router.

RaisedByPangolins · 17/12/2021 13:08

I was cooking once and black smoke started billowing out the back of my oven. It had been wired in incorrectly and would have started a house fire if I wasn’t there. No way I’d leave any heated appliance on while not home - tumble drier, oven, slow cooker etc. just not worth the risk when you could do it any other time.

Gonnagetgoing · 17/12/2021 13:09

not that this should help (does it?) but I got a trip switch fitted in cupboard under stairs when I bought my small cottage. DM has one and was after years of when we were teenagers and sometimes left iron on, or on one epic occasion where DB dropped iron, it went straight through or the metal part on ironing board where it's supposed to sit when hot and narrowly missed the cat who was walking past... Shock. Oh and water being filled into the steam bit which fell on socket nearby. Trip switch avoided big accidents.
