So, we were packing up to leave this morning for a long weekend in Wales. Leaving in about 30 mins.
I come downstairs and smell that DP had just put the oven on for a pyrolytic clean. This would mean us leaving the house for 4 days whilst the clean function was running.

My reaction was definitely in the territory of "WTAF you muppet"

DP thinks i was over the top, the clean function shuts down automatically, and i was worried about nothing.

SO help us settle it.

YANBU Leaving the oven on pyrolytic clean whilst you go away for 4 days is insane

YABU You are being anal, i do it all the time, I love coming home to a shiny oven.

I won't leave anything but the fridge on when out or even asleep. A few years ago our reliable 2 year old tumble drier caught fire while we were asleep. We were woken up by a terrifying boom. Thankfully it was a very small fire in the top corner that we could put out ourselves. I still think about how lucky we were for the noise. If it had happened without a sound it would have been a disaster.

@viques we have nigel the neato. 5yrs + and stopped working. Tried everything 🥲🥲

So brought Eddie the eufy

Week later nigel came back to life 😂

So Eddie doses downstairs. Nigel upstairs

So they never meet

Now need one to actually do the stairs 😂

Good grief, this gets worse, you leave your robots alone in the house knowing one of them is a junkie!

people who only leave your fridge/freezer on......what about sky box or similar and internet hub?

toomuchlaundry · 17/12/2021 18:07

Always turn off the internet hub at night

FreyaB84 · 17/12/2021 18:24

@Hemingwayscatz

If the tumble dryer is likely to set your house on fire, aren't you better off being out while it does?

This is very true Grin.

If I was at home and the tumble dryer caught fire, then there's a good chance I would notice (hear the smoke alarms, notice the smell and maybe see the smoke if I was close enough). I'd hopefully be able to deal with it by putting the fire out myself if it was small enough, switching the appliance off if a fire hadn't got going yet or call 999. If I was out, and based on where I live, it could be a while before anyone noticed a fire.

You being at home or out could be the difference between just having to replace one appliance and your entire house being gutted.

I remember there was a big ad campaign here in Scotland a few years back about not leaving electrical appliances like tumble dryers and dishwashers on you're whilst out or asleep.

If I'm away for say a long weekend, they'd be off, why power them if you're not there? Everyone should be considering their carbon footprint. Excess washing, standby modes etc all use power.
BackBackBack · 17/12/2021 19:29

Nope. I have gone out with the washing machine going before but not often; I don't like running appliances when I'm not here. Absolutely never to the tumble dryer - if I need to go out then I switch it off and restart it when I get back.

violetbunny · 17/12/2021 21:01

We just bought a new oven and I refused to get a pyrolytic one because the thought of something heating itself up that high in my house freaks me out! There is absolutely no way on earth I would leave something like that running when I wasn't there.

The house is never empty for longer than 4 hours (yes I did check!) and we dont own a router or TV so .....
PyongyangKipperbang · 17/12/2021 22:31

Oh and the dishwasher and dryer are both switched off at the wall unless they are in use because of the people I know who have had those absolute disasters.

FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 18/12/2021 17:50

@Aspergirl77

We had one of these, first time using pyrolytic clean function and the oven door shattered sending superheated glass shards exploding over the kitchen. Glass got replaced, haven’t used the cleaning function since.
I read the OP and thought "wow, a self-cleaning oven... I need one of those". Having read about a hundred comments on this thread about exploding oven doors, I absolutely don't want one in my house. How is this such a common thing that it's happened to half of Mumsnet, surely the manufacturers should be subjecting things to better safety checks before releasing them to the general public? 😱

Was it a Zanussi ?

I used the function after I'd had mine a year and within 15 mins there was a loud bang and the inside layer of the oven door was shattered into many, many pieces. Still finding them now!

I daren't use it again.

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 19/12/2021 10:44

Probably on balance not the best idea.

However swearing and calling your other a Muppet isn't very respectful, nor necessary.

Gonnagetgoing · 19/12/2021 11:16

Quick message off back of this my DM messaged me to say elderly relatives house caught on fire due to mirror reflecting on bright sunlight and I think causing a fire to curtains anyway all clothes and jewellery burned to bits and relative staying with jewellery whilst insurance and house sorted out.

BasiliskStare · 19/12/2021 14:47

@Gonnagetgoing - I had one of those glass spheres with bubbles in and where the sun hit it , it started smoking on the coffee table & actually there was a burn on the coffee table - luckily DS and his friend were there at the time an spotted it but yes I agree any convex glass needs to be out of strong sunlight.

Daisy Goodwin ( author ) I think had similar

Never had a problem with our pyrolictic oven ( Miele ) but we always stay in when it is on - glass not shattered yet. & I don't leave the washer or dryer on when out. Did not realise Dishwashers could be the same Sad

ThisWormHasTurned · 19/12/2021 15:08

Our blender caught fire when it was plugged in but not in use….it caused a bad fire in the house and we were in at the time! Couldn’t handle it ourselves, took about an hour for the fire brigade to get it under control.

I don’t leave things plugged in where I can help it when we go out and obviously stuff like the fridge we have to leave them on but I do talk to them and say I’m trusting them not to catch on fire before we leave! Grin

FrankGrillosWrist · 19/12/2021 15:24

@EmpressCixi

I would. I have insurance though, so if anything happens it’s just material possessions really. Everything truly important would be out of the house.
I'm sure everyone in Grenfell did too.
RaisedByPangolins · 19/12/2021 15:30

@ImInStealthMode

Yeah probably wouldn't leave the oven clean cycle on (if my oven did that. Oh how I wish it did that).

I do sometimes set the washing machine to be finishing a cycle as I get home from work though. At least if it were to get stuck on spin then I'd be there.

I am unreasonably nervous of slow cookers.

Have you watched This Is Us? If so, not unreasonable!
pigsDOfly · 19/12/2021 15:45

The inside glass shatter on my oven door when I was cooking a jacket potato on a highish setting.

I realised afterwards that I'd left one of the shelves too far forward so that it was touching the glass and of course, when the metal shelf got very hot it shattered the inner glass door.

I went out once and left my very reliable Miele washing machine running. Came back to the kitchen floor flooded.

Things can go wrong. Leaving an oven at high temperature and going out is a definite no no for me.
