So, we were packing up to leave this morning for a long weekend in Wales. Leaving in about 30 mins.
I come downstairs and smell that DP had just put the oven on for a pyrolytic clean. This would mean us leaving the house for 4 days whilst the clean function was running.

My reaction was definitely in the territory of "WTAF you muppet"

DP thinks i was over the top, the clean function shuts down automatically, and i was worried about nothing.

SO help us settle it.

YANBU Leaving the oven on pyrolytic clean whilst you go away for 4 days is insane

YABU You are being anal, i do it all the time, I love coming home to a shiny oven.

Our oven short fused the other day for the first time ever and completely unexpectedly. It's only 6 months old too. If that had happened whilst we'd been away power would have been off for all items in the house.

You are so not being unreasonable!

Even if we go out and the dryer is on I put a camera on so I can watch it

WonderfulYou · 17/12/2021 14:22

I never leave any appliances on (apart from the fridge) if I go away even if it’s just an hour.

AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 17/12/2021 14:26

I'd never leave anything running while out of the house/asleep (apart from fridge, but sometimes even that keeps me awake at night...)
How long does the cleaning take? If around an hour, I'd wait. If not... can you cancel the function once its started?

Changemaname1 · 17/12/2021 14:27

A pyro what now , am really living in 1872 over here

He was b u

Chikapu · 17/12/2021 14:36

Everyone should have a self-cleaning oven, best thing ever IMO. I wouldn't run a cycle then leave the house, it gets incredibly hot.

Elliania · 17/12/2021 14:40

My partner once had the bright idea that we could unplug the fridge freezer and leave it to defrost while we were away for 2 weeks. First I heard about it was when he presented his Mum with a bag of frozen food from our freezer & announced his grand plan. Once she and I stopped laughing we explained why this wasn't an ideal plan.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/12/2021 14:42

@Hemingwayscatz

If the tumble dryer is likely to set your house on fire, aren't you better off being out while it does?

This is very true Grin.

If you have functioning smoke alarms which are as deafening as ours, you would know long before things had got too bad that there was a fire and you could deal with it/call 999, save your important stuff if you have to get out of the house, etc. No chance of doing that if you're away from home at the time.
Daisy95 · 17/12/2021 14:45

Nope I agree with you, my granny had 2 of these ovens both exploded during the clean, injuring me one of the times, so never would I leave it if I weren't in let alone for 4 days.

godmum56 · 17/12/2021 14:48

I have had a washing machine start to smoke because of a faulty controller and know someone whose house burned down because she left damp clothes over night in a switched off but plugged in tumbledryer

MargaretThursday · 17/12/2021 14:49

I don't even go away and leave the batteries in the tv remote. I take them out even if I'm going into the garden to hang the washing up. I heard of someone for whom they exploded....

Meanwhile in the real world, most people leave things running at some point.

Aspergirl77 · 17/12/2021 15:00

We had one of these, first time using pyrolytic clean function and the oven door shattered sending superheated glass shards exploding over the kitchen. Glass got replaced, haven’t used the cleaning function since.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/12/2021 15:03

Glad you didn’t leave it on Op!

toomuchlaundry · 17/12/2021 15:04

I can't believe there are still people who leave a tumble drier going when they are out or in bed

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/12/2021 15:04

Wow. I leave my washing machine and dishwasher on while leaving the house

Plus my 2 robot hoovers

Prob wouidnt leave oven on to clean and turn off incase doesn’t turn off as away

When I’m out above , I’m home within the hour usually

LethargicActress · 17/12/2021 15:08

I wouldn’t leave it, but I used to leave appliances running regularly until our dishwasher caught fire while we were asleep.

ImInStealthMode · 17/12/2021 15:24

Yeah probably wouldn't leave the oven clean cycle on (if my oven did that. Oh how I wish it did that).

I do sometimes set the washing machine to be finishing a cycle as I get home from work though. At least if it were to get stuck on spin then I'd be there.

I am unreasonably nervous of slow cookers.

Squeezita · 17/12/2021 15:24

@EveningPrimeMinister

4 days? Ours only takes about an hour. I wouldn't go out while it was running though.
It doesn't take 4 days, they will be away for 4 days.
Libertynan · 17/12/2021 15:25

He is BU.

I have only used this function once on my new oven and one of the layers of glass in the door shattered within the first 15 minutes of the programme running. . So who knows what could happen?

LowlandLucky · 17/12/2021 15:26

Why on earth would anyone walk out and leave their oven switched on ? A fire can sweep through a house very quickly. It happened in London last night. (OP) i would imagine your house insurance would no be valid if she left the oven self cleaning.

TheOpportuneMoment · 17/12/2021 15:35

I never leave appliances on if I'm not in. Our dishwasher caught on fire and if I hadn't been in the room with it then the whole house could have been up in flames. A friend's tumble dryer once also burnt out their entire flat. Not worth it!

PyongyangKipperbang · 17/12/2021 15:38

I never leave anything but the fridge on when I go out. The son of my mum's friend went out with the dishwasher on and it caught fire. The house was gutted and the insurance company wouldnt pay out because they had left it unattended. The same happened to a house a few streets away with a tumble dryer. Not worth the risk imo.

So yep, he is a muppet.

I’d be scared to leave two robot cleaners. One would be alright but two? They could easily start egging each other on to do stupid things, daring each other to climb curtains or something. I wouldn’t trust appliances that think they have brains and autonomy.
TuftyMarmoset · 17/12/2021 16:05

No way would I leave the house with the oven on!

dustofneptune · 17/12/2021 16:15

F no, I even go around switching off all of those plug-in air fresheners before I ever leave the house :D

PyongyangKipperbang · 17/12/2021 16:18

I think its easy to assume everything will be ok unless you have seen first hand the damage even a small fire can do. Every electrical appliance as the potential to cause a fire and to knowingly go out whilst the biggest culprits (tumble dryers and dishwashers) are running is just asking for trouble.
