So, we were packing up to leave this morning for a long weekend in Wales. Leaving in about 30 mins.
I come downstairs and smell that DP had just put the oven on for a pyrolytic clean. This would mean us leaving the house for 4 days whilst the clean function was running.

My reaction was definitely in the territory of "WTAF you muppet"

DP thinks i was over the top, the clean function shuts down automatically, and i was worried about nothing.

SO help us settle it.

YANBU Leaving the oven on pyrolytic clean whilst you go away for 4 days is insane

YABU You are being anal, i do it all the time, I love coming home to a shiny oven.

I wouldn't leave the oven on or the tumble dryer. But I leave my washer and slow cooker on

Summerrain123 · 17/12/2021 13:10

I know electricians and firefighters. Never leave a appliance on when you are out!! Although I'm guilty of leaving the phone charger plugged in!

Skeumorph · 17/12/2021 13:12

Our neighbour had the glass shattering thing too!

No, I would never leave it. Mainly because it's so stupidly uneccessary - why choose to run it while you're as far away and as unable to sort out a problem as it's possible to be? Almost perverse.

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/12/2021 13:13

God no way. I only leave the oven or tumble drier on if I’m out briefly and never when my dd or dogs are home without dh or me.

Fredstheteds · 17/12/2021 13:15

No I’m a food tech teacher or I was - my school ovens had these and I never let them in without me being around.

TheUndoingProject · 17/12/2021 13:15

I’m on your side OP.

I’d go out with some appliances running, but that seems a particularly fire-y/high risk one to me.

EmpressCixi · 17/12/2021 13:17

I would. I have insurance though, so if anything happens it’s just material possessions really. Everything truly important would be out of the house.

ReviewingTheSituation · 17/12/2021 13:17

Why not just turn it off and then do the programme when you get back? No big deal, surely?

ChangeChingyChange · 17/12/2021 13:18

All these people saying they'll leave the tumble drier on - its literally the most dangerous appliance! Stop doing that.

FreeBritnee · 17/12/2021 13:18

You are correct. Very bad idea.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 17/12/2021 13:19

I had a friend whose house burnt literally to the ground because of a fault with her tumble dryer that she left on whilst she was out. She came home to fire engines and half a house
I think I would class the oven as the same level of fire risk and would not leave it in whilst I was out. Fridge obviously and washing machine and dishwasher I do leave on.

JustcameoutGC · 17/12/2021 13:20

I think i shall present the results of the poll to DP on Christmas morning.

It seems pretty unanimous.

I have fathered children with a muppet.

One nil to me.

@Masdintle

Ex Fire Brigade here. Don't leave a heated appliance unattended.
At the risk of sounding desperately middle class, I have an Aga. I have no choice!
EmpressCixi · 17/12/2021 13:23

Oven is lower fire risk than all other appliances because it is literally fire proof unlike washers, dryers, refrigerators, dish washers. If a fire starts inside it, it’s not going anywhere...oven is fire proof. If fire starts outside oven, it wouldn’t be the oven causing it and anything inside the oven will not get burnt because ovens are fire proof.

JustcameoutGC · 17/12/2021 13:26

Dont you go ruining my poll lady

BasiliskStare · 17/12/2021 13:27

I never leave the tumble dryer on when I am out of the house - friend of mine had a house fire because of it. I know 99% of tumble dryers won't cause a house fire but they do generate heat. On holiday we leave fridge / freezer and router on . We do have some phone app thing so we can lights on and off so house doesn't look abandoned / unoccupied.

I have a Miele self cleaning oven - - no way would I leave that going if I weren't in

Polmuggle · 17/12/2021 13:28

Why don't you just stop the function?

LakeShoreD · 17/12/2021 13:30

My oven once blew up during a clean!

lanthanum · 17/12/2021 13:31

My DH used to do it overnight, but he won't be doing that again, after our smoke alarms went off at 1.30am.

randomsabreuse · 17/12/2021 13:31

I'd not leave it on a cleaning cycle but regularly leave our oven on a low heat cooking a stew while kids are at activities...

Don't trust any washing appliances though.

To be fair the appliance that failed and did heat damage to the floor was the fridge freezer which we have to "trust".

Hullabaloo31 · 17/12/2021 13:32

Tumble dryers and dishwashers are both bad for starting fires!

Loopielu · 17/12/2021 13:34

My oven has the same function. It gets incredibly hot! I wouldn't even go upstairs for more than a minute or 2 with that running.

I get that it's technically fine after the timer runs down but I'd definitely feel better knowing it was completely off.

caketiger · 17/12/2021 13:35

Yanbu

CovidMakesThingsHarder · 17/12/2021 13:37

Fuck no. I won’t even leave. Tumble dryer on.
Your DH is a twat, you win this one.
