So, we were packing up to leave this morning for a long weekend in Wales. Leaving in about 30 mins.
I come downstairs and smell that DP had just put the oven on for a pyrolytic clean. This would mean us leaving the house for 4 days whilst the clean function was running.

My reaction was definitely in the territory of "WTAF you muppet"

DP thinks i was over the top, the clean function shuts down automatically, and i was worried about nothing.

SO help us settle it.

YANBU Leaving the oven on pyrolytic clean whilst you go away for 4 days is insane

YABU You are being anal, i do it all the time, I love coming home to a shiny oven.

I actually have no idea what a pyrolytic clean is, but apart from fridges/freezers I'd never leave the house with an appliance running.

JustcameoutGC · 17/12/2021 13:45

For clarity, we did not leave it on. Because THAT WOULD BE MENTAL

@steppemum

I would never leave the house with an appliance going like that. The possible exception being the dishwasher
They can catch fire too.

I would never leave the oven or tumble dryer on while I went out. Everything else, yes, no problem. Is that weird?
Entirely sensible I would say. I don't leave the tumble dryer on if I am not at home - since hearing about them catching fire etc over the last few years.

Washing machine stuck in a spin cycle can overheat and catch fire
Nanny0gg · 17/12/2021 13:50

@Landof

I had no idea people only used their washing machines when someone at home. I am at work so much I'd never get on top of washing if I only used the machine when at home!
Time it so it's part way through when you get home if you must
Nanny0gg · 17/12/2021 13:51

@guardiansofthegalaxychocs

Tumble drier, dishwasher I would and do, but oven seems a step too far. Not sure why really! Possibly your DH is right but my instincts are with you OP!
All of those have caused house fires
Nanny0gg · 17/12/2021 13:53

@itwasntaparty

I wouldn't leave it. But 4 days?! What are you meant to do in the meantime if you were home?

I'll leave the washing machine on never the tumble dryer. Husband gets twitchy about the slow cooker being on 🤦🏻‍♀️

Grin

The cleaning takes an hour.

The OP is going away for four days!!

GiantHaystacks2021 · 17/12/2021 13:55

Would your home insurance cover you if the thing went on fire while unattended for 4 days?

Beautiful3 · 17/12/2021 13:57

No way. My parents had one and the glass shattered all over the kitchen, while it self cleaned. They said never again. Also my friends dishwasher used to be on every night, until it set fire to their kitchen. I would only run appliances during the day, while I'm in (fridge is the obvious exception).

TheVolturi · 17/12/2021 13:59

Sorry, the what what clean? My oven must be absolutely shite because it definitely can't clean itself 🤦‍♀️

Chocolatewheatos · 17/12/2021 14:00

I often stick the dishwasher and washing machine on and go out. Never occurred to me to be home in case they set on fire. I would think nothing of what your husband did, actually quite handy to do as you leave 😬

Chocolatewheatos · 17/12/2021 14:02

Tbh if there's a risk they're going to shatter glass all over the kitchen I'd rather not be there when that happens

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/12/2021 14:05

@EmpressCixi

I would. I have insurance though, so if anything happens it’s just material possessions really. Everything truly important would be out of the house.
Goodness! We have insurance too, but the loss of our house and all our possessions would be a pretty heavy blow and a major inconvenience, to put it mildly.

I don't understand how this works, but although obviously I wouldn't want any member of our household to be hit by exploding glass shards, I also wouldn't want the oven on at a very high temperature, unattended, with the glass door no longer there to stop the heat escaping into the kitchen. Or does it automatically switch off if the door shatters?
mam0918 · 17/12/2021 14:09

Me and Dh differ he switches nearly everything bar the fridge/freezer off but I don't see any issue with leaving the washer running or a baby monitor plugged in etc...

However, his obsession does more harm than good... I always turn the oven off at the wellpoint when it's not in use (common sense as it's basically fire), he was so busy flicking switches before leaving that he switched it ON... so the whole oven was on for 5 days while we were away.

His propensity to need to fiddle with nobs/switches drives me insane as he 'accidentally' turns stuff on all the time trying to turn it 'off' so he is actually worse than me for leaving stuff on while giving a lecture about how everything needs to be off.

senorafridgidaire · 17/12/2021 14:09

I don't even know what a pyrolitic clean is but no way would I be leaving anything on like that while I was out of the house. Years ago one of my colleagues had a massive electrical house fire after she left her dishwasher on just a normal cycle while she went Christmas shopping. It was totally devastating and they had almost a year in temporary accom whilst everything was fixed - in addition to the structural and fire damage they lost all their clothes and soft furnishings and other personal possessions that the fire hadn't even touched (because they were full of smoke). The fire brigade told her it wasn't that unusual for this kind of thing to happen when appliances are left running with no-one at home. Not a risk worth taking IMO!

ElftonWednesday · 17/12/2021 14:11

@CovoidOfAllHumanity

I had a friend whose house burnt literally to the ground because of a fault with her tumble dryer that she left on whilst she was out. She came home to fire engines and half a house I think I would class the oven as the same level of fire risk and would not leave it in whilst I was out. Fridge obviously and washing machine and dishwasher I do leave on.
If the tumble dryer is likely to set your house on fire, aren't you better off being out while it does?
Hemingwayscatz · 17/12/2021 14:11

Don’t actually know what any of this means, I didn’t realise a self cleaning oven existed until this very second! I leave the washing machine and dryer on when we’re out all of the time, my washing would never get done otherwise.

Hemingwayscatz · 17/12/2021 14:12

This is very true Grin.

dottiedodah · 17/12/2021 14:12

Steppemum Our Dishwasher caught fire and luckily I had decided to wait until the evening to put it on .(Rather than when we went out for the day!) Strange smell and the wiring had caught light! Engineer on call out said never to leave them or washing machine /tumble drier on either !

Parky04 · 17/12/2021 14:12

No idea what a pyrolytic clean is. My oven isn't that posh, so for that reason alone YABU.

dottiedodah · 17/12/2021 14:14

Also bear in mind that if heaven forbid it caught fire while you were out ,the Insurance company may not pay out .Just not worth the risk

Slowchimes · 17/12/2021 14:14

I think if anything did go wrong and catch fire, it may invalidate your insurance if you have left anything switched on/functioning in your absence.
