AIBU to feel really annoyed after seeing the trailer for Giles Coren’s new series on BBC2

Last year Giles mocked the death of Dawn Foster, a disabled journalist from a working class background, which caused additional distress to her grieving family. He has never apologised. It is possible to cancel your Times subscription or to not buy the newspaper, but we all pay our TV license fee and the idea of it funding the salary of such a spiteful silver spooner and for him to go partying around five star hotels really, really irks me. Why has he faced absolutely no consequences? Why is he still in print and on TV? Piers Morgan was forced to resign for saying he didn’t believe Megan Markle saying she was suicidal. Surely laughing at someone’s premature death and hoping that they go to hell is much worse than that?

Is there some sort of BBC forum I can complain to? I’m not even going to mention his terrible sex scene writing.

Tom Watson had Dawn Foster fired from her job at the Guardian because she was critical of him in an article. A job she worked fucking hard to get! Whether you agreed with her or not, she was an actual journalist and talented writer who got to where she was on her own merit. There was no social media mob, not even much justifiable outrage BTL, Dawn Foster was quietly cancelled the old fashioned way. A powerful man putting a word in the right ear.

Giles Coren will not be cancelled. He can behave and write as atrociously as he likes and makes a pretty penny doing it. You'd think that would be enough for him, but, no. He couldn't not take to twitter to denigrate Dawn Foster and crow about her death. And then deleting the tweet and putting up a 2nd draft.

While I understand some people's worries about GC, you can rest assured that he won't be cancelled.

I wasn’t aware of the Dawn Foster incident until I read about it here. It’s possible it was mentioned in a podcast episode that I missed, but it wasn’t mentioned in any that I had listened to.

The anti-semitic sock thing is weird, but as he is Jewish was he trying to make an ironic point? ie was he mocking anti-semites? I really couldn’t say as that’s not something I followed either

I just read the ‘barren old hag’ post. That is a disgusting comment and pretty indefensible.

I could take or leave Foster’s journalism but she clearly died too young and Coren is a grade-A c*nt. No-one seems to like him but he stubbornly carries on.

@mustlovegin likes him. She is against cancel culture, but pro censorship as she disapproves of people “stirring up muck” (whatever that means).

I don't know details but it was something to do with (just googled) trying to defend his wife by sending himself anti Semitic abuse.

Someone worked out the sock was him and he confirmed it. From my quick Google.

There is NO excuse for this. At all. No matter what was going on.

I live in North London and things like. DH seen swastikas sprayed on shops and bus station in area many Jewish people.
Some synagogues don't put address online, if interested you contact and take from there.
Security on synagogue buildings assume not all don't actually know. My NCT was in hall of synagogue and security keeping an eye this was 15 years ago.
In news today BBC didn't read but headline Jewish people abused spat at on bus (I think it was) with video.
When I was 6th form Jewish charity bombed heard it 4 miles away. On way to work next day whole length of shops glass all over. Passing car burnt out to metal.

The other things are horrible but given what I know because where I live it's just utterly well. To me, unforgivable.

Dawn's poor mother tweeted about Coren's cruel gloating about her daughter's sudden and untimely death. Her friends have been open about how much hurt he caused. How he is still in a job is beyond me.

Btw I'm not Jewish just in case that makes a difference to any posters.

I have been trying to find out what the hell Coren meant by "when someone dies who has trolled you on Twitter, saying vile and hurtful things about you and your family..." I can't find any trace of "trolling" or "vile and hurtful" things said by the late Dawn Foster - am I missing a whole pile of it or did he seriously mean the "yer Da" tweet?

Giles clearly feels extremely sensitive about all the criticism he gets, especially on Twitter about the sex writing in his failed novel. People, or rather “bad faith motherfuckers”, were mocking him in a hilarious way. There weren’t hundreds of thousands of them though. That is self aggrandising nonsense.

According to the Tattle thread he seems to be disliked by Jay Rayner, Gordon Ramsey, and the late Anthony Bourdain (who called him a c*nt). What is the common denominator? They are all big, 6 foot + macho men. I imagine the diminutive Giles feels threatened by these kind of men and has picked fights with them.

It happened long before he and Dawn crossed paths. It was alright though because GC dodged it by the skin of his teeth. Later he created an antisemitic, Polish plumber persona that he used to tweet antisemitic abuse to himself so that he could claim victimhood. And generate/cement anger, against another minority group in this country.

But it's alright, he didn't get "cancelled" or anything.

It's not cancel culture to think that someone who publishes hateful opinions about the polish, jokes about raping 12 year olds, slander and accusing people of being pedophiles, dancing on people's graves shouldn't have a job on a primetime family entertainment show. I mean compare him to what happened to Johnathan Ross. It doesn't add up.

I watched amazing hotels a couple of years ago before I knew about GC. And I actually feel kind of deceived by the BBC, in that they know he's a right tinker and they don't care.
