AIBU to feel really annoyed after seeing the trailer for Giles Coren’s new series on BBC2

Last year Giles mocked the death of Dawn Foster, a disabled journalist from a working class background, which caused additional distress to her grieving family. He has never apologised. It is possible to cancel your Times subscription or to not buy the newspaper, but we all pay our TV license fee and the idea of it funding the salary of such a spiteful silver spooner and for him to go partying around five star hotels really, really irks me. Why has he faced absolutely no consequences? Why is he still in print and on TV? Piers Morgan was forced to resign for saying he didn’t believe Megan Markle saying she was suicidal. Surely laughing at someone’s premature death and hoping that they go to hell is much worse than that?

Is there some sort of BBC forum I can complain to? I’m not even going to mention his terrible sex scene writing.

Cripes! Maybe some people find angry men who are prone to outbursts of swearing sexy. Also some women find very short men attractive.

I think GC exemplifies small dick energy and that, and his obvious insecurities about his height and status, explain all his aggressive and abusive behaviour. He can't handle criticism, however mild, and lashes out violently at any perceived slight.

My DH is 5’10 and has to stoop down to embrace me. GC didn’t so I’d say he was 5’7 tops. He was also very bitter about the success of JK Rowling and said she wasn’t a proper writer. He was scathing about Nigella Lawson (this is an excellent drip feed, isn’t it?) and revealed more family insights than he should have done.

@LadyLyndon A poster on Tattle, who has also met him, had a theory that Giles wears built up shoes to add a few inches, which is also hilarious. They said they met him in a restaurant with his parents and that he was walking very oddly because of the platforms in his heels.

I find Frankie Boyle’s comments far more offensive than the tweet from Giles Coren. I enjoy his podcast with Esther. He can be a prat but he can also be very entertaining. He has also been quite vulnerable talking about his abusive father on his podcast, which can’t have been easy. OP, I think you are overreacting and perhaps are prejudiced against him for various other reasons.

I do find it offensive to read comments mocking people for being short.

Giles has also talked about how he was horribly bullied at boarding school, completely ill suited and traumatised to the point of developing a stutter. I thought it was very brave of him to raise that on his podcast.

This is just to say that there is more than meets the eye to a person.

I don’t find him genuinely that sneery either, I interpret a lot of his snobby comments as part of a persona and also sending himself up as a spoilt, middle class North Londoner.

@WarmWinterSun I don’t listen to his podcast. Has he ever mentioned the Dawn Foster incident, or when his house was graffitied? I heard a bit of one episode that was mentioned in a media blog which was about him and Esther complaining about him being mocked on Twitter because of his bad sex writing in his failed novel as a consequence of him saying that there are no successful male writers in a column. It’s interesting what @LadyLyndon said about him being so annoyed about J.K. Rowling’s literary success.

My perspective is this is not a drunk/ historical one off. It's more than once and it's extreme. The sock thing is bizarre. I personally don't think he's the right choice for a major channel, primetime, family viewing prog. Not with all that under his belt. Those progs are generally friendly, presenters amiable, bit funny. Uncontroversial and 'safe'.

He's not Frankie Boyle. He is not a comedian who has always featured the content that he does.

His TV that I've seen is the sort of gentle entrainment side. That houses through the ages with Sue was good. Would have been just as good with someone else.

Given the things that he has said and done. Not for anything other than that's what he's done as an individual on SM.

IMO he should not be fronting mainstream family shows.

He behaved disgustingly and instead of facing that, he is pretending it didn't happen and using all his platforms indulging his victim complex. Don't look at what I did, look at me and I'll tell you how I'm the victim. It's podcast and column fodder. It isn't brave, it's what he does.

@CheeseMmmm You have succinctly and elegantly summed up exactly my thoughts about him. The fact that he is employed and earns money from a publicly funded broadcaster when he is so morally abhorrent in his conduct is particularly galling. If he was on ITV or Channel 4, which are at least partly funded by advertising, it wouldn’t seem so bad. But the BBC! Surely the BBC can do better than Giles Coren! I thought they had diversity targets to meet.
