To ask why a man may have a single long fingernail?

Is there a thing to do with having a single long fingernail as a man?

I just caught a glimpse and didn't want to stare but looked like all nails cut down except from nail on little finger.

It was disproportionately long compared to the cut ones too so not like it had just grown quicker than the others.

Grossed me out what is this?

Guitar player!

n1CKed · 24/11/2021 17:45

For guitar playing you only have long nails on the thumb and first three fingers, never the little one. For those in the know - a single long nail on the little finger was for snorting small amounts of cocaine...

My brother used to kick off when he was young (5ish) and my mum tried to cut all 10 finger nails - “nooooooo!!!! that’s my pick nose finger!!!!!” He is 35 and I still remind him of this

I bet it’s his pick nose finger Wink

Aside from previous likely accurate answers, he may be a hairdresser. I remember years ago a male hairdresser used his little finger with a long nail to section hair.

Or, might just be a wild combination of all the above 😅

restingbitchface30 · 24/11/2021 17:50

liveforsummer · 24/11/2021 17:50

This was a thing for men when I lived in Cyprus- I assumed religious reasons as most things are there. Never actually thought to ask

Bpickle1 · 24/11/2021 17:53

Everyone ignored my comment about making covered buttons. So coke head, guitar player or covered button maker. Grin

WheekestLink · 24/11/2021 18:15

My 5 year old asks me to keep one of her fingers long so she can scratch her ear and pick her nose properly.

Could be that?

TooembarasingNameChangeNeeded · 24/11/2021 18:18

I saw this alot when I worked in a casino, it was always asian men, I asked a few times as I thought the first guy was messing with me lol its for nose picking

LoisLane66 · 24/11/2021 18:19

A lot of Chinese men as distinct from Asian men, have long fingernails on their pinkie.

FoggySpecs · 24/11/2021 18:22

I thought it was to pick your nose/teeth

grey12 · 24/11/2021 18:22

BobISMyUncle · 24/11/2021 18:32

I don't know, for sure. It might be a "me" thing. My Dad used to have a long finger nail on his little finger. I have ALWAYS told my daughter to not trust a long finger nail on the little finger on a man. I have no idea where it comes from. I can't remember. It is not guitar playing. I don't think my Dad had anything to do with cocaine, or had even heard of it.
It did, however, have a lot to do child abuse. I wonder, which guitarist plays a guitar with their little finger? I'd actually forgotten about about the the long finger nail thing. Thank you, for reminding me. A long finger nail is not always cocaine.

Leegugs · 24/11/2021 18:35

It helps with creasing the Rizla for a tightly rolled spliff...I am told from a pretty reliablev( high) sourceGrin

Holdingontonothing · 24/11/2021 18:46

As others have correctly said, frequently appears in Middle Eastern cultures as an outward sign (either real or wanting to portray an image) of wealth due to long nail being easily broken if he did manual labour.

However as the man is apparently white British I've got no idea other than the guitar/coke options. Or maybe he just likes the look?

LoisLane66 · 24/11/2021 18:54

Several reasons are given online.
Chinese men do it to bring luck.. If their pinkie is shorter than the top knuckle on their ring finger, they grow the nail to compensate.
Another worldwide reason is to show status, the reasoning is that you cannot properly use a shovel/spade if the pinky nail is overlong which shows you to be a white collar man.
A grimmer reason (and the most popular) is to pick their nose and/or ear wax.
