Dirty dancing movie for 8 year old?

Friday night is family movie night here.

I like to have the film ready so no endless discussion and debate!

She’s not a sensitive soul and LOVES dance. She knows about abortion and I’m not at all worried about questions relating to that

However I saw it twenty years ago. Is it otherwise suitable?

I actually more concerned about my 12 year old son being embarrassed?!

I would say it was ok, but I'm quite laid back about stuff like that as long as it's not scary.
I think that when I was a kid, we watched films like Grease and the unsuitable bits just went over our heads!

There is a parents bit on each film listed on IMDB that is often quite useful to read.

chilliplant634 · 12/11/2021 16:46

Personally I wouldn't. It doesn't give the right message about relationships. shrugs it's up to you though.

Etinoxaurus · 12/11/2021 16:49

What @chilliplant634 said. Also, it’s a shit film.

PAFMO · 12/11/2021 16:51

Illegal abortion and a man old enough to be your dad fucking you?
Probably not.

Dochas121 · 12/11/2021 16:51

If she loves dancing what about Sing? An actual age appropriate movie about singing and dancing.

Bebabelouba · 12/11/2021 16:52

Whose the old man you speak of?? Shock

hollygoflightly · 12/11/2021 16:52

I'd say no

AryaStarkWolf · 12/11/2021 16:53

I love Dirty Dancing but it only occurred to me years later that the age gap was pretty inappropriate between Johnny and Baby, she was only 16 and he was 25

whatswithtodaytoday · 12/11/2021 16:54

Surely there are more appropriate movies about dancing? I really don't think it's suitable.

What’s the right message?

And if it does t give the “right” message, surely opportunity to chat after the film

Strictly Ballroom would be better imo

Could you give me some ideas please ASAP

We have seen so many that slim pickings now it seems!

Hardly. She was 17, he was 25.

Do you mean Johnny castle? He was 25. Baby was 18.

She is 8, can you not just pick something that she will enjoy that doesn't need slide lesson on relationships afterwards Sad

AryaStarkWolf · 12/11/2021 16:56

@zurala I thought she was 16, 17 is a bit better Grin

authenticforgery · 12/11/2021 16:56

Hmm I'm surprised your 8 year old knows about abortion tbh but maybe I've dropped the ball with my 9 year old..

Dixiechickonhols · 12/11/2021 16:56

No I think it’s too young it used to be a 15. Themes like backstreet abortion not suitable.

Maflingo · 12/11/2021 16:57

I re-watched it recently and wouldn’t be comfortable with my 8 yo watching it. It’s a (very dated) coming of age film, so 11/12 seems about right.

ChessieFL · 12/11/2021 16:57

There is a scene where they are in bed together. I wouldn’t want my 8 year old watching that.

Decision made Thanks

Now for the alternative!

Well maybe branch out a bit from dancing. How about Stardust? I assume she's seen Annie? Parent Trap?

adoreyou · 12/11/2021 16:58

I watched Dirty Dancing every weekend for from about the age of 7.... much to my mothers annoyance.

I had no idea it an abortion scene in it till I watched it as an adult! It just goes over your head. They never actually say the word "abortion"

I just loved the dance scenes and the music. Still do.

So yes I would allow my dd to watch at aged 8

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/11/2021 16:58

Read the Parents guide on IMDB.

Has she seen the Greatest Showman? Great dancing in that.
