Dirty dancing movie for 8 year old?

Friday night is family movie night here.

I like to have the film ready so no endless discussion and debate!

She’s not a sensitive soul and LOVES dance. She knows about abortion and I’m not at all worried about questions relating to that

However I saw it twenty years ago. Is it otherwise suitable?

I actually more concerned about my 12 year old son being embarrassed?!

Some people are slightly obsessed about the fact that Patrick Swayze was in his thirties when it was filmed - despite the fact that he was playing someone younger than that.

Nobody complains about Stockard Channing in Grease in the same way though.

The sister also gets upset when the waiter (Robbie?) forces himself on her during a “date”

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

Read the Parents guide on IMDB.

Has she seen the Greatest Showman? Great dancing in that.

She adores that

Jennifer Grey was 26 playing a 17/18 year old. It’s really not unusual.

It’s THAT scene that bothers me

Thanks for the nudge

I think most of the grease actors were a lot older than their teenage characters.

I’m going with ten things I hate about you

There’s also a scene where the woman Johnny was giving dance lessons too is in bed with Robbie.

Dixiechickonhols · 12/11/2021 17:01

Step up with Channing Tatum is a pg.

pilates · 12/11/2021 17:01

No, I don’t think it would be suitable for an 8 year old.

How about Hairspray or High Street Musical?

Bebabelouba · 12/11/2021 17:02

I guess DD was set in a different era 🤔

Ballet shoes as an alternative?

Indeed. As was Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing.

It's normal. But for some reason, Patrick Swayze's character in Grease is the one some people have an issue with.

High Street Musical 😆😆

lentilsforever · 12/11/2021 17:06

How about old movies - things like Singing in the Rain? Anything with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, for a start.

If she's watched everything modern she might like something a bit different.

Dixiechickonhols · 12/11/2021 17:07

I don’t think 10 things I hate about you is a good one for 8 yr old ether. Love it and great for say 13 year old - references to sex, drugs, peer pressure.
HSM isn’t a bad shout - age appropriate and lots of singing and dancing.

lentilsforever · 12/11/2021 17:08

Seen it

Maybe something a few years old? We have seen so many

Recently did Bugsy Malone with DC, , Annie (the new one) and Yes day (not dancing but fun for them). Trolls World Tour animation- music is good.

(Saw Dirty Dancing with 14yo niece recently, she was bored and critical of it. I was shocked how much it had dated, can’t believe I was absolutely obsessed with it at her ageBlush)
