Dirty dancing movie for 8 year old?

Friday night is family movie night here.

I like to have the film ready so no endless discussion and debate!

She’s not a sensitive soul and LOVES dance. She knows about abortion and I’m not at all worried about questions relating to that

However I saw it twenty years ago. Is it otherwise suitable?

I actually more concerned about my 12 year old son being embarrassed?!

DD10 was out at a birthday party yesterday so DD12 and I enjoyed a cosy evening in together with hot chocolate and La La Land.

She’s underage in the US, abortion, controlling relationships all round, bad storyline….

That's a ridiculous thing to say, my comment wasn't even related to an 8 yo watching Dirty Dancing, just about the fact so many posters complain about films having crap messages in general. I havent allowed my teens to watch Saw yet as I believe they are too young, mainly due to the violence that I think will upset them. Doesn't mean the film shouldn't be made or watched, it can have a shitty message but still be ok to watch. Films should just be enjoyed for what they are. DD is hardly comparable to Saw Hmm

Was going to suggest LaLa Land. Although the story is a bit dull, the dancing is good!

Just watched Dirty Dancing with my DD (15) tonight. She found some of the sexy dancing a bit vom and was clearly a bit uncomfortable at the actual sex scene even though it was very PG.

I just think half the story would be lost on an 8 year old, even if they know about abortion, learning about an infection from a backstreet abortionist is possibly a bit much!

I bloody loved it though!

Films should just be enjoyed for what they are

And part of what they are, is the message. And in some, it's the most important part. Imagine watching, for example, I, Daniel Blake, and just completely ignoring what it has to say?

Nearthelooplease · 14/11/2021 00:12

When the OP said her 8 year old knows about abortion I imagine she means that she knows the basic ‘facts’ in simple terms. I doubt she has full, in-depth knowledge Hmm

I watched it when I was about 8 and anything I was too young for just went over my head. My parents were famously lax about such things though Grin

I still don’t understand why kids would enjoy a film they can’t properly understand large bits of though? What’s fun about that? Won’t they ask what’s happening?

If my DD (8) doesn’t perfectly understand what’s going on or spots something in a plot going over her head, she’s like a terrier asking me to explain it all! I had to explain what “unexpurgated” meant earlier because she saw a reference to it in a book. I certainly don’t fancy explaining backstreet abortion of an evening while relaxing on the sofa watching a film.

myheartskippedabeat · 14/11/2021 05:09

Who on earth would think this is suitable for an 8 year old? It baffles me

AFS1 · 14/11/2021 08:20

Is this a wind-up post? The films you’ve suggested are completely unsuitable for an 8 yr old, OP.

Please don’t tell me you put Step-Mom on. It’s a sobfest. There’s no chance in hell that I would allow my 8 yr old to watch a film where the main plot line is the mother dying. What are you thinking?

You seem determined to make her watch teen and adult films with grown-up issues. Let her enjoy her childhood and watch some kid-friendly movies.

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

Read the Parents guide on IMDB.

Has she seen the Greatest Showman? Great dancing in that.

Ah, yes. A film that glorifies a man who bought, abused and sold other people for profit is much much better morally.
TheOriginalEmu · 14/11/2021 08:38

I watched dirty dancing a thousand times as a kid. I had no idea penny was pregnant and had an abortion for years. They never say it out loud. The closest is ‘knocked up’ or ‘in trouble’ snd I had no idea what that meant. I just loved the dancing and music,

doadeer · 14/11/2021 17:56

Center stage 2 and 3 are pretty innocent from memory. Dance focus but not so much bulimia, sex as seen in every dance film!
