Dirty dancing movie for 8 year old?

Friday night is family movie night here.

I like to have the film ready so no endless discussion and debate!

She’s not a sensitive soul and LOVES dance. She knows about abortion and I’m not at all worried about questions relating to that

However I saw it twenty years ago. Is it otherwise suitable?

I actually more concerned about my 12 year old son being embarrassed?!

Stardust

Kuachui · 12/11/2021 17:50

to be fair i watched it when i was a kid and never knew it was an abortion, i thought she had a tummy ache 😂😂😂

WeeWeegieWummin · 12/11/2021 17:51

I remember asking for my dad to rent this from the video shop for my 8th birthday party, was so excited and told all my friends that my dad was bringing it back..... only for him to come back with Bed knobs and broomsticks!!!
Apparently all the D.D videos were outHmm
Still remember the disappointment in everyone's faces Grin

@FluffyBooBoo

Strictly Ballroom would be better imo
I LOVE Strictly Ballroom.
minimecantrollerskate · 12/11/2021 17:52

Parent Trap is good. I always liked the original version although it is dated now but DD loves the remake.

Herbie Fully Loaded is good, girl triumphs in mans world but car racing so should suit everyone

I watched Grease as an 11YO and when Rizzo sang the ‘I won’t go to bed ‘til I’m legally wed’ line, I thought - wow, isn’t she going to be really tired? Shock
Helicoptorlife · 12/11/2021 17:54

Jeez these suggestions. Do people not care about ratings anymore? None of these are suitable for an 8 year old. I rewatched ten things I hate about you recently.

Rape
Sexual assault
Drugs
Alcohol abuse
Coercion
Bullying
Sex

But sure crack On and watch it with a 12 and 8 year old Confused

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 12/11/2021 17:55

Baby was 18 - it was the summer before she was going to college wasn't it?

I watched it quite a lot as a kid the abortion story line went right over my head, i had no idea what was wrong with Penny!

Helicoptorlife · 12/11/2021 17:57

Another vote for the princess diaries!

userisi · 12/11/2021 18:01

I used to watch this on VHS over and over as a very young child. When I came to rewatch it as a teen I was shocked by the abortion, the whole thing went right over my head as a child 😂 I just liked the music! To be fair there isn't sex shown in it from memory?? So it's just the abortion stuff that probably needs a parental warning? I'd happily talk to my eldest from about the age of 10 about it, but not my 8 year old.

Helicoptorlife · 12/11/2021 18:01

Or the new Aladdin - singing and dancing and better than the original

userisi · 12/11/2021 18:02

Maybe look at Center Stage?

ChampagneLassie · 12/11/2021 18:05

I must have watched this several times as a teen and was totally unaware of an abortion element (must re-watch!)

Bellfor · 12/11/2021 18:11

Hairspray! Dd8 loves it!

Poppydoppy18 · 12/11/2021 18:12

Have you seen all the Step Up movies? What about Fame?

Spudina · 12/11/2021 18:16

Step up is better I think. The abortion stuff is a bit old for 8.

lentilsforever · 12/11/2021 18:20

We are going woth step mom

I love Centre Stage, but a lot of the story line is based on sex. Not appropriate for an 8 year old.

Stepmom makes me proper ugly cry.

Sofia82 · 12/11/2021 18:31

That's the exact age I was when I watched it at my friends (knowing full well I wasn't allowed at home). The abortion and rape stuff went right over my head. You know your DD best. Im pretty sure there is an edited TV version too without the more obvious sex scene bits...

CoolNoMore · 12/11/2021 18:38

Not Fame! The filming scene (spoiler: her 'big break' was a porn shoot) towards the end still freaks me out.

Oh sorry I hadn't actually seen it myself, my dance friend loved it and I checked to see it was a 12 so assumed it wasn't risqué!

User135644 · 12/11/2021 18:44

No, it's PG-13.

The Nexflix Generation are so used to having graphic sex scenes shoved into every episode of their binge worthy dramas, mere abortion scenes and soft-nudity seems so tame now.

Actually most of the dance films listed here are set on a backdrop of sex/drugs/violence.

Apparently dance is a hard sell by itself 😂
