Dirty dancing movie for 8 year old?

Friday night is family movie night here.

I like to have the film ready so no endless discussion and debate!

She’s not a sensitive soul and LOVES dance. She knows about abortion and I’m not at all worried about questions relating to that

However I saw it twenty years ago. Is it otherwise suitable?

I actually more concerned about my 12 year old son being embarrassed?!

I love the film Dirty Dancing, saw it when a lot younger too.
The abortion scene just went straight over my head!
Thought Penny was just crying in the kitchen as she was sad.
Then poorly and had to see a doctor.
Obviously now I get it lol, you see it as an adult and go "ohhhhh" Blush Grin

Beach Movie Descendents 1,2 3

How is 10 things I hate about you appropriate either? A bunch of 16yr olds and story lines appropriate to that age range....not relevant to an 8yr old
A boy who pays another boy to date someone so he can date a girl??? Great message..?

I love 10 Things I Hate About You, some of the one liners in it are absolutely hilarious, but it is a bit of a shitty message in places and no way would she have just taken him back at the end like that!
CreamFirstThenJamOnTop · 12/11/2021 21:25

I was 7 when Dirty Dancing came out and used to watch it over and over again. The adult themes went way over my head but I loved the dancing and music so much.

ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind · 12/11/2021 21:30

What exactly are you worried the film will do to her? If she already knows what abortion is, her innocence has already been lost.

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 12/11/2021 21:36

Yes, an 8 year old knowing about abortion is a bit Hmm My 10 year old is just becoming aware of it now, and even then I wasn't sure how much I should be telling her at that age.

izzylizard · 12/11/2021 21:36

Thoroughly Modern Millie! It has Julie Andrews, its fab and hilarious and great for those ages

Dixiechickonhols · 12/11/2021 21:37

spudina have a soft spot for wild child - love the scene with moaning myrtle in the car following the bus.

Dixiechickonhols · 12/11/2021 21:41

There’s abortion and back street abortion though. The line in dirty dancing and a fold up table and a dirty knife. There’s blood on sheets when baby’s Dad treats Penny and he shouts is this what my money paid for. All this goes over head I don’t understand surely they’d ask why baby is crying and saying I’m sorry daddy. Or Robbie in bed with older lady. Or the sex scene in Johnny’s room.
I was 13 or 14 when I first saw it and I think that’s about right.

venusmay · 12/11/2021 21:49

Could you fast forward through the adulty bits and just watch the dancing? My dd would be bored with some of it because she wouldn't understand the relationship stuff.

Spongeboob · 12/11/2021 21:55

Knows about abortion at 8? Seriously?
With films you can just skip through the inappropriate for age range bits.

Poppydoppy18 · 12/11/2021 22:03

@CoolNoMore

Not Fame! The filming scene (spoiler: her 'big break' was a porn shoot) towards the end still freaks me out.
Ohh I don’t remember this at all 😶 I thought it was age appropriate… Maybe I should rewatch it. Sorry for the bad recommendation!
Tryingtogetitright · 12/11/2021 22:11

Is Mamma Mia any good? My kids loved it but were a lot younger than 8 so the three dads bit went over their heads. Not sure if appropriate?

Comefromaway · 12/11/2021 22:15

I took Ds and dd to see the stage show when they were 7 & 9. The film is awful but will appeal to kids.

Lavender24 · 12/11/2021 22:22

I would but I'm a lax mother 😂

Strictly Ballroom is fabulous!

And it's certainly not the only cheesy film mentioned on this thread.

YourWinter · 13/11/2021 01:05

For an 8 year old?? Absolutely not.

foxgoosefinch · 13/11/2021 01:55

I have no idea why an 8 y o would like DD even if it was suitable - I found most of it boring as hell as a teenager. Apart from the final dance scene, which I admit is great, it’s tedious, old-fashioned and pretty much none of it is what anybody these days would want. Baby is a simpering idiot and Johnny is sulky, stubborn and emotionally childish. Watching it now I feel for the dad!

I also don’t get why would you show a child a film with parts of it they don’t get or go over their heads? That’s hardly enjoyable for them when they could watch a film they understand all the way through. It’s not like they can’t just watch it later on.

Anyway it’s definitely not suitable for an 8 y o OP, it was a 15 for a reason. Surely there are tons of great films and TV they could watch that is age appropriate?

Roselilly36 · 13/11/2021 07:06

I would say too young, Dirty Dancing, sex scenes, abortion, prostitution, not a film I would happily watch with a very young daughter. I think it’s a 15 too.

RedHelenB · 13/11/2021 07:13

@whatswithtodaytoday

How about old movies - things like Singing in the Rain? Anything with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, for a start.

If she's watched everything modern she might like something a bit different.

The relationship messages sent out in the Astaire and Rodgers movies are awful! Want a girl, stalk her till she gives in, ruining her chances of happiness with any other man along the way!
ChocolatePecanBanana · 13/11/2021 07:13

If she likes dancing, for future Fridays, what about some of the musicals from the 50s? Things like West Side Story, Singin in the Rain etc. used to love those when I was a child!

ChocolatePecanBanana · 13/11/2021 07:16

Haha just saw the comment directly above - Singin in the Rain isn’t an Astaire-Rogers film. Neither is Oklahoma! West Side Story isn’t either. The Leonard Bernstein ones are the best in terms of music I think, and generally pretty good storylines.

It's a shame people can't just watch films for enjoyment anymore and have to pick them apart to decide what message they are portraying Hmm people have become so uninteresting. Just watch stuff and talk about it afterwards, imagine if no controversial films were ever made, we'd have pretty much nothing to watch.

You're right. OP, let her watch Saw. Don't worry about the messages it portrays. Just enjoy.

Center Stage is set in a ballet academy. It's one of Zoe Saldana's early films
