Dirty dancing movie for 8 year old?

Friday night is family movie night here.

I like to have the film ready so no endless discussion and debate!

She’s not a sensitive soul and LOVES dance. She knows about abortion and I’m not at all worried about questions relating to that

However I saw it twenty years ago. Is it otherwise suitable?

I actually more concerned about my 12 year old son being embarrassed?!

I'd let mine watch dirty dancing and 10 things I hate about you

Dixiechickonhols · 12/11/2021 17:13

Disney channel movies? Descendants and teen beach movie have lots of dancing in.

Dixiechickonhols · 12/11/2021 17:15

First twilight is awful and more for tween/young teen.

Rannva · 12/11/2021 17:16

It isn't about dancing. It's a young adult romance about falling in love and sex and growing up and shit. Why would an 8 year old care? Aren't there some more valuable stories you can tell her?

God, my female relatives were obsessed with 'boyfriends' and everything had to be makeup, finding boys, going where boys are and watching shit films about hooking up with losers. I hated that part of growing up in my family. None of them could see further than their next crap relationship and related drama fallout.

There's more to the entire entertainment industry than dull films about 'finding a boyfriend'.

Angus thong and perfect snogging?

@adoreyou

I watched Dirty Dancing every weekend for from about the age of 7.... much to my mothers annoyance.

I had no idea it an abortion scene in it till I watched it as an adult! It just goes over your head. They never actually say the word "abortion"

I just loved the dance scenes and the music. Still do.

So yes I would allow my dd to watch at aged 8

This! Me and my cousin watched it most weekends as kids, we loved it and obviously had no idea what we were really watching. We loved the songs and the big dance at the end.
RussianSpy101 · 12/11/2021 17:19

Your 8yo knows about abortion?!? What about the bring it on films?

There’s a dance film on Netflix called feel the beat which my DD loves. The actress who plays Evie in descendants is the main character.

Dixiechickonhols · 12/11/2021 17:20

Sharpay’s fabulous adventure has singing and dancing.
Some of the Disney channel films are quite watchable.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 12/11/2021 17:20

Well, my BF has just started watching Game of Thrones with their 12YO, which I think is mind-boggling and judge to high heaven (I won’t even let my 11YO watch Friends because of the myriad porn references), so Dirty Dancing does seem tame in comparison.

But really - as PP have said, it’s a coming of age film which just isn’t going to interest an 8YO.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 12/11/2021 17:20

@OnceUponAWhine

Recently did Bugsy Malone with DC, , Annie (the new one) and Yes day (not dancing but fun for them). Trolls World Tour animation- music is good.

(Saw Dirty Dancing with 14yo niece recently, she was bored and critical of it. I was shocked how much it had dated, can’t believe I was absolutely obsessed with it at her ageBlush)

In Bugsy Malone, isn't Talulah very sexualised?
Dixiechickonhols · 12/11/2021 17:21

Angus is good but more for 12 ish. The cat is funny though.

StrawberrySquash · 12/11/2021 17:21

I remember my friends as teenagers saying the abortion stuff had gone completely over their heads as kids.

Dixiechickonhols · 12/11/2021 17:24

Monte Carlo with Selena Gomez is fun. Or Wild Child set in a boarding school but again probably 12 ish.

BadwordMcGee · 12/11/2021 17:25

I think it's fine. I was about 8 and the abortion bit just went straight over my head. I remember watching it again at 13 and having to ask for clarification!

OnceUponAWhine · 12/11/2021 17:26

Re Bugsy Malone- I must admit I was viewing it entirely different to dc, who was just really into the custard pie splats and dances. Another from my childhood that has dated😏 interesting point you raise, it was the school production for most schools in my time.

Dixiechickonhols · 12/11/2021 17:27

The Princess diaries?

InglouriousBasterd · 12/11/2021 17:31

I’m sure it’s too old but DD loves Mean Girls. I just remind her that we don’t call other girls sluts! That’s addressed in the film anyway

Comefromaway · 12/11/2021 17:32

I’d vote for Hairspray. It’s a 12 certificate but nothing I wasn’t happy for my then 8 year old to see. And a great message.

nomorefrogs · 12/11/2021 17:36

Billy Elliot?

Breakingmad · 12/11/2021 17:37

The abortion but will sail over her head. I used to watch it loads as a kid and didn’t understand the darker stuff till I watched it as an adult.

angelopal · 12/11/2021 17:40

Do you have Disney? The descendents films are good. Lots of singing and dancing in them.

GnomeyGnome · 12/11/2021 17:41

Popular with my 8yo DD:

The princess diaries
Descendants
High school musical
Zombies
Mary Poppins
Maleficent
Black Beauty
Parent trap
Enchanted
Race to witch mountain

Probably loads more but if that gives you any ideas?

FrownedUpon · 12/11/2021 17:41

No, illegal abortion scenes are not appropriate for an 8 year old. Surprised this needs spelling out tbh.

stopwiththewineoclock · 12/11/2021 17:41

Honey
Step Up
Centre Stage

All dance-y

kerosene20 · 12/11/2021 17:42
