Chanel on play dates

366 replies

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 13:52

Went to one of my regular play dates with my Ds, 3 yesterday and noticed again the number of beautiful Chanel bags, designer sandals etc etc. Lovely, down to earth mums, nice friends, but I’m just not in the same league with my Zara bag & trainers
Aibu in feeling a bit shit about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Ubiquery I’m not sure, just that having all this money is just *better somehow..all these beautiful things. I know, I know, that’s crap, but I guess because it’s all around me, I’m starting to feel it more and more. My Ds won’t go to the same school as the majority for example, as it’s simply just too expensive.
I’m just not on their Level. I realise it doesn’t mean they’re better than me, but it Is nicer to have a nicer/newer car, a big house, beautiful clothes..I don’t think anyone can deny that, it just is

I know 100% if we returned to the U.K. with our normal friends with good incomes, but not these crazy rich lives, I wouldn’t feel like this.

@2bazookas But, I don’t and they don’t, just a comparison really
They’re is a definite difference in texture, feel, durability and look between an expensive, designer bag and a Primark one (I love Primark for lots of simple bargains)
but I don’t think anyone could say the pricier one isn’t nicer, simply for the luxuriousness of it.

None of these mums currently work also, but previously had fantastic, high flying careers and are very well educated

OP pretty much all my bags are designer. I love an expensive handbag. But my wardrobe, aside from a few “key pieces” is fully H&M and Zara.
Whereas my best friend doesn’t care about handbags but all her clothes are Sandro, Rag & Bone and the like ie higher end high street. She doesn’t care, I don’t care.
Doubt very much she is judging you.

Yogawankonobi · 04/11/2021 18:03

If they are nice people that’s all that matters.

MintMatchmaker · 04/11/2021 18:04

@2bazookas

feel sorry for any woman who needs a designer label to bolster her self esteem and social status.
Why would you think they “need” it rather than purchasing it simply because they like it?
AnAverageMum · 04/11/2021 18:10

Get your head out your arse OP. & theirs. 😂

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 04/11/2021 18:18

Your friends sound nicer than all the nasty and judgemental people on this thread (not hard I suppose though) so that’s the key! They won’t care about what you’re wearing! You sound v sweet too btw.

Sad that people have to be so unpleasant. I have plenty of designer handbags but wouldn’t give a shit and don’t give a shit if my friends don’t. At least btw a chanel handbag is made by a professional in France or Italy, not made in some sweatshop by children on minimum wage in the Middle East like a primark bag - in response to all the stupid comments about unethical blah blah. Just makes people sound extremely bitter. MN st the moment has some seriously bitter threads running.

In the price gap between Primark and Chanel, there are many beautiful bags. Far more individual, just as luxurious, far cheaper than Chanel.

If what you want is a beautifully made and designed leather bag, take your pick from craftsman made.

RB68 · 04/11/2021 18:23

whose to say they are not fake or second hand etc who knows. Don't let it bother you

HaveringWavering · 04/11/2021 18:48

I still don’t get why simply by reason of living outside the U.K. you are naturally hanging around with a majority of people who are significantly wealthier than you or you don’t have any friends at all who wear non-designer shoes and have handbags from Zara. I say this as someone who was an expat in Asia for a decade, in one of those high flying jobs your friends have all weirdly given up. I had friends who were stinking rich but did not flaunt it, but quietly wore designer gear, also plenty who were wealthy and did not choose to buy things like that, or others who did not have that kind of money. Still can’t get my head round why you are the only one of the group who is not like them.

What about if you just like the bag / dress / shoes, is that allowed?
thehairyhog · 04/11/2021 19:00

Actually really don't get the appeal of Chanel bags! Horrible things!

Don’t be ridiculous. They’re beautifully made, very high quality bags made from fabulous leather. I’m not keen on the chain handles but to dismiss them as horrible is just silly.

@3WildOnes

If I had a Chanel bag I would wear it every day. I would want my money’s worth.
Who wears a bag? On your head?
Tiramiwho · 04/11/2021 19:16

@marykitty

Zara? I am wearing now Leggings from Aldi

Thank you! I was beginning to feel an outsider here - it's all designer coats/boots/houses/furniture when anyone posts a photo of an item here 😌

I get all my bags from charity shops ( I have a lot 😁 )

How on earth is it silly? You can think the style of something is horrible regardless of the quality of its materials. I just googled images of Chanel bags out of curiosity and I think they're a bit horrible too tbh. The chains, that quilted look and the bling logo bit on the front... not appealing to me, certainly.

opalplumstead · 04/11/2021 19:20

@RosieGuacamosie

If you really want a nice bag OP I would suggest joining some of the Facebook resale pages and getting yourself a nice mulberry/YSL etc for about 1/2 the retail price. The Chanel ones tend to hold their value very well but there are bargains to be had for other practically new bags! I buy most of my bags this way now Smile
Can you recommend a good one ? I'm desperate for a ysl loulou but it's £1800 for a new one 😳
bettertimesarecomingnow · 04/11/2021 19:21

I was about to say "sandals"???? We wear wellies to play dates here

But then I realised you are not in the UK.

One of my mum friends came with straw in her hair last time we met up....

CoraPearl · 04/11/2021 20:17

I have been thinking a lot about this topic recently. I was lucky to inherit several Chanel bags from my mother. I vividly remember her buying them and paying around £600-£900 in the very late 80s, early 90s. I also remember buying a beautiful leather Miu Miu bag and wallet and there being change from £500. Fast forward to yesterday, I was in Selfridges and saw a nylon Miu Miu bag for £1250. Chanel rise their prices by 5% annually. Last year, they raised them twice. The prices are obscene, and even though I could buy them, I just can't bring myself to do so.

I was actually in Selfridges because I have a few thousand pounds of vouchers. I was planning on replacing my Chanel cardholder which I lost a few months ago, something I had purchased it mid-2019 for a little under £300. Now, the same model is £430. Even though I am not technically paying out of my own pocket, I just couldn't bring myself to buy it.

Anyway, back on topic, OP, your friends like you for you, not what designer goodies you have. I imagine they're keen to get their money's worth out of these item, and why they are using them day to day.

Ireolu · 04/11/2021 20:39

@Justheretoaskaquestion91agreed. Some mean spirited comments here. It would be just as nasty of me to call bags from the primark grim, cheap, ugly and poorly made. I don't think this. If someone wants to spend 5-8k on a handbag fine. It may be because they like it, not as a braggy piece or an ego boost. Also fake Chanel is easy to spot if you have seen and handled the bags. We all have choices (based on several factors -income/finances being the obvious one here) calling others stupid because their choices differ to yours is judgy and just comes across as bitter.

Christmasadverthell · 04/11/2021 20:40

@blossomtoes i agree with the pp, theyre ugly. If i had the money id spent it on something less garish. Opinions are just that, and not silly because you disagree.
