How is Jim Davidson not cancelled?

If you've watched the documentary black and white by Ashley Banjo you will see what I mean.

This man is the most racist man I've seen on TV in recent years.

He's a disgrace.

He's not been on the television for years though. Didn't he move to Dubai after he was cleared from being a sex pest? Faded away before the needing to be cancelled.

donemeover · 20/10/2021 02:41

@Catflapkitkat fair enough then! Lol

Couldn't believe what I heard on that documentary. And more worrying there's others just like him with that toxic mindset.

He's a disgusting creep.

I think Jim Davidson was 'cancelled' a long time ago...🤷‍♀️

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 20/10/2021 02:47

He hasn't been around for years anyway.

Most comedians of that time period built a career on racism and sexism, and claim that its "PC gone mad" when anyone pulls them up on it.

Nothing will change the mind of someone like him, so best to let him fade away into obscurity.

SantasCat · 20/10/2021 02:54

Shocked to say I saw an advert recently advertising his latest show at a theatre near me.

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/10/2021 03:13

He kind of has been.

No TV work in years and makes his money from live shows to other racist arseholes.

The thing is, in his heyday it was ok. Lenny Henry has said that he saw no problem back then with watching (and appearing) in the Black and White Minstrels Show, because it was of its time. Same with Roy "Chubby" Brown and his appalling sexism. It was of its time and a lot of women found him hilarious.

Times change, people learn, we move on. Thank Goodness.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 20/10/2021 03:21

He's not been on tv since about 2007 though so not sure as that's recent! Can't imagine anyone signing him up for any shows nowadays.

Nat6999 · 20/10/2021 03:26

Chubby Brown has been banned from Council venues in Sheffield, there is a 40,000+ names petition to have his gig reinstated. The majority of people want the council to back down.

Thanks for the heads up on where not to move to.....

But joking aside (sort of) there is still a huge swathe ofmen people who think that these kind of people are hilarious. So I am not surprised at the petition although I am glad that, given the population of Sheffield, less than 10% of them signed it.

I am surprised that 40,000 RCB fans can actually write their own name though.....

Rubyupbeat · 20/10/2021 04:35

@donemeover
What channel is the documentary on, please?

I live in Sheffield, most of the people who signed that petition do not. In fact when local CB fans got together for a protest against the decision to cancel his performance, only five people turned up, and two of them were journalists from the local paper.
rrhuth · 20/10/2021 05:56

He's going to get a following for gigs, if you look at polling on various issues, about 25% of people hold grim attitudes.

Langsdestiny · 20/10/2021 06:29

I am quite uncomfortable that people think it's ok to stop someone performing, Roy Chubby Brown is deeply deeply sexist but nobody is forcing people to go to a show and watch him. My guess is most if not all of those campaigning against him will watch porn, something which is much more misogynistic and damaging than anything he has produced. But hey ho I am sure they feel they are the goid guys.

deeni · 20/10/2021 06:35

Agreed. I don't like sexist and racist jokes and never found these sorts of comedians funny. But I also don't like "cancel culture".

Demanding bans doesn't stop people having these attitudes unfortunately.

Banani · 20/10/2021 06:35

He’s been banned from a local theatre for his behaviour off stage. Years ago I worked at a theatre he performed at, deeply unpleasant man.

PerseverancePays · 20/10/2021 06:42

He came to my daughter’s high school in the nineties when she was part of a show. She said in the photographs where they had line up to pose with him , he always had his arms at the back and groping them while grinning at the camera. They were 14. Disgusting man.

AdelindSchade · 20/10/2021 06:54

I wish people wouldn't say it was acceptable in the eighties or whatever because it really wasn't. Not in our house it wasn't. I was well aware from the 70s onwards about JD and others like him, Benny Hill for instance. My mum didn't aporove of 'racialism' or 'chauvinism' as called then. There was nothing exceptional anout her - she was from a white northern working class background. So how did she manage to work it out? She can't have been the only one.

Is disgraceful that Davidson was on tv for so long.

Looubylou · 20/10/2021 06:56

I know of someone, who was a fan in the 90's,and, after sending fan mail and a photo, was invited to meet him after a show in our city. She felt the need to escape from his company very quickly (unharmed). She was no longer a fan.

RicherThanYow · 20/10/2021 06:57

He is an absolutely vile individual, of that there’s no doubt. But you cannot “cancel” a human being. It’s a simplistic, misguided notion which doesn’t actually lead to any positive change. That kind of insidious social censorship feels very uncomfortable and I just don’t think it’s the right way to deal with things. Even nasty old Jim.

Is this about CB or about people protesting about the Council deciding what can and can't be seen locally?
MyOtherProfile · 20/10/2021 07:03

I'm uncomfortable with people thinking hate speech is ok, which is basically what his level of racism is.

However what @Banani posted is interesting. He was cancelled there because of his own bad behaviour off stage. Clearly a very unpleasant man.

MyOtherProfile · 20/10/2021 07:13

I just looked at JDs Twitter out of interest. Mostly ads for a TV channel called ustreme where he has a programme to tell his side of the Ashley banjo story. I looked on the TV channel website and it actually seems to be mostly JD with the odd self advertised racist person in between.

I looked so you don't have to 😁

thegcatsmother · 20/10/2021 07:14

I'm not quite sure how you cancel someone anyway. Is that new speak for attack their reputation? You could try to 'cancel' me on Twitter and Facebook, but as I am neither, would I even know it was supposedly happening?

If it is trashing reputations, then presumably the libel laws remain the same as redress?

In principle I agree but for a long time Chubby Brown was the choice of after dinner entertainment at industry events/awards dinners etc. So as a woman in financial services for example he was hard to avoid if you wanted the sane opportunity as men to attend these events

There's a difference between cancelling and not giving someone paid air time.

People who hold racist or other widely unacceptable views have no automatic right to be given access to e.g. primetime TV contracts.

But if Jim Davidson wants to stand on a box and speak, he's perfectly free to do so. He hasn't been cancelled, no person in the UK gets 'cancelled' - this is made up nonsense.
