If you've watched the documentary black and white by Ashley Banjo you will see what I mean.

This man is the most racist man I've seen on TV in recent years.

He's a disgrace.

@rrhuth

No one is cancelling anyone.

This is made up phrase designed to provoke outrage amongst idiots.

I am fascinated by this version of its history- please post more details of its origins.

I haven't watched the documentary, but going by the excerpts taken from the interview, it appears that the documentary's objective was to stir up controversy and cause division. Also I haven't seen any of J Davidson's previous work, but his responses in this particular interview appeared to be quite restrained? He looked like he was ambushed by the production team and the interviewer as he is probably seen as an easy target. He should never have agreed to do it. Others will likely learn from his mistake and act accordingly

I suggest you do a little rudimentary research on his ‘work’ and life before posting something like this.
LowlandLucky · 20/10/2021 09:48

I really can't like Jim Davidson or Roy Chubby Brown, i think they are both vile and would never ever go and see them and agree they should never be on national television but who on earth thinks "canceling" people is ok. All of those agree with it are exactly what they claim to dislike, intolerant and bullying.

Roussette · 20/10/2021 09:51

I don’t get the adoration that surrounded Bruce Forsyth, he was incredibly misogynistic/ outright leery and of the same ilk as Jim Davison IMO
Oh yes... and as an aside, he knocked me over coming out of a door when I was 7 months pregnant and literally stepped over me with no apology Shock

JD is disgusting... he was in that cooking programme and called Brian whatshisname a 'shirtlifter'.
He's a dinosaur and I hope he struggles to earn money.

How on earth can you excuse him when you don't know who he is and what he was all about. I grew up with comedians like him on the tv. Believe me, he's no loss to the world of comedy.

Right. God forbid people of colour talk openly about the actual, real racism they have experienced, its actual, real impact on their lives, and call out the perpetrators. That would be "causing division". They should know their place, and their role (shut up and keep their heads down).
ZittiEBuoni · 20/10/2021 10:11

Jim Davidson loves to moor his boat in my town from time to time and 'hold court' to 'fans' and the local rag (though he never gives actual shows, maybe because nobody wants him to). This summer he gave a speech in defence of Gary Glitter (whom he had visited in the local nick). When I hear his boat's in town, my teenage dds and I stay away from the harbour, put it that way.

I saw that programme, and was horrified by how vile he was. Paul Young was there too, and didn’t step in, which upset me. Brian was very young then, and it was hard to watch.

Disgusting man. I don’t know about this cancelling thing, but i’d like him to get his come-uppance

MrsRobbieHart · 20/10/2021 10:22

You know that the term is used to describe removing attention and a public platform from people right?

It doesn't mean they cease to exist.

Are you really that confused about a simple concept?

Hmm
ohthestruggles · 20/10/2021 10:31

People cannot be cancelled, even the likes of Jim Davidson and CB. I liked a pp's explanation of de-platforming him. Grin if venues don't want to host him because he is a vile, mysoginistic racist both on and off stage then that is absolutely fine. I think his reach is becoming smaller and smaller, haven't heard of him in ages. My dad used to watch them both, they're fucking gross. You can't compare them to a bloody jazz act.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 20/10/2021 10:33

These people perform a public service.
Anyone who says they are funny and they love them out themselves as racist/sexist twats and you know not to waste any time on them.

Danzig · 20/10/2021 10:39

@mustlovegin defending a racist? What else is new?

I suggest you actually watch the documentary or some of his "work". Although you'll probably agree with his racist and homophobic rants.

mustlovegin · 20/10/2021 11:03

Although you'll probably agree with his racist and homophobic rants

I don't. Try reading my post again and maybe you will be able to understand what I've said

FuckingFabulous · 20/10/2021 12:18

Ugh, Jim Davidson. Vile bastard
And his mate Jethro. Sexual abusers, the pair of them

stalkersaga · 20/10/2021 13:00

I did. You said Ashley Banjo talking about his experiences of racism "causes division", which is a massive dog whistle for "people of colour shouldn't talk about racism because it upsets the white folks".

FuckingFabulous · 20/10/2021 13:19

No way. He actually stood there and defended Gary glitter?!

Ah, probably those pre pubescent girls leading him on. Defenceless, he was. 🤮

2Two · 20/10/2021 13:34

40,000 people is not a majority of Sheffield! And the petition will have been signed by plenty of twats who don't live in Sheffield too

And plenty of people who don't even exist. I believe such eminences as Mr M Mouse and Mr E Presley signed it.

LaetitiaASD · 20/10/2021 13:41

@PyongyangKipperbang

He kind of has been.

No TV work in years and makes his money from live shows to other racist arseholes.

The thing is, in his heyday it was ok. Lenny Henry has said that he saw no problem back then with watching (and appearing) in the Black and White Minstrels Show, because it was of its time. Same with Roy "Chubby" Brown and his appalling sexism. It was of its time and a lot of women found him hilarious.

Times change, people learn, we move on. Thank Goodness.

People learn? You sure?

I heard recently (friend of a friend) of a middle-aged man - Oxbridge educated, rather conservative, multiple daughters - saying how much he's recently been enjoying Roy Chubby Brown and Bernard Manning youtube vids and how much funnier they are that he remembered.

FFS.

2Two · 20/10/2021 13:42

I can't stand Roy Chubby Brown but I signed the petition - it's ridiculous that they cancelled his gigs. I don't like his patter so I don't go to his shows, but that doesn't mean others should be banned from doing so.

He hasn't been banned, it's simply the case that the council has decided not to allow him to use their venues, which they have every right to do. If the people signing the petition feel that strongly about it, they could club together to fund an alternative venue for him.

By the same logic I can't stand jazz music so I don't go to jazz gigs either, but I wouldn't ban them for the small minority who do like it.

Can you really not see the difference between disliking something because it is not to your taste, and disliking something because it is bigoted, racist, and deeply hurtful to a minority which has done nothing to deserve that treatment?

saleorbouy · 20/10/2021 14:08

No need to ban these acts or right wing political parties. People's and societies attitudes change and they vote with their feet. Their support or following dwindles until they become so peripheral and insignificant that they fade away in to the distant past.
If you ban them it makes them have a cult following and provides media column inches.

whattodo2019 · 20/10/2021 14:38

He lives in Hampshire as far as I know and so does his (ex?) manager. Vile man, as far as i'm concerned ...

HarrietsChariot · 20/10/2021 14:43

I honestly thought Roy Chubby Brown was dead. You learn something every day.

Jim Davidson was cancelled in the correct manner. Rather than a few Twitter people shouting and forcing people to stop watching him or working with him, people just naturally decided to stop watching his TV shows, buying his DVDs or seeing him on tour. The fact he has disappeared shows that it's not necessary to "cancel" someone, because if they are out of step with society they will cancel themselves.

derxa · 20/10/2021 14:45

@Samcro

whilst we are cancelling him, can we do the disablist twunt Frankie Boil?
Totally agree

He agreed to be interviewed by a member of a group he talked about in a racist rant. He knew what he was getting in to.
EvilEdna1 · 20/10/2021 14:53

About 30 years ago I was working in large branch of WH Smith and Jim Davidson was due to come in for a signing. The branch manager was too scared to advertise it properly because even then he was massively divisive and controversial. So on the day no one turned up and he signed one DVD which was bought by a staff member (with discount). It was cringe!
