Beans on toast for dinner

Last night my DH was out with friends, came home and got huffy as I gave the kids beans on toast for dinner. 'That's not very nutritious' he moans. (He himself chose to have fried chicken for dinner)

In my defence: I work full time, had spent the day doing serious amounts of household crap during my free moments (was WFH) and my youngest actually asked for beans on toast.

YANBU - beans on toast is a perfectly decent Friday night meal.

YABU - you slovenly mother, where were the veggies and organic quinoa

Perfectly acceptable meal, and it is nutritious! He’s being daft.

JimmyLennon · 09/10/2021 06:57

Yanbu

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 09/10/2021 06:57

I definitely remember getting beans on toast as a child and I enjoyed it.
He's obviously cooking dinner tonight then, yeah? Wink

BikeRunSki · 09/10/2021 06:58

YANBU it’s not a bad meal at all!

Danikm151 · 09/10/2021 07:00

More nutrition in beans than there is in fried chicken

BergamotMouse · 09/10/2021 07:00

My kids have it once a week. It's their favourite meal despite all my attempts to get them to enjoy my home cooking.

DontGiveAFlyingFig · 09/10/2021 07:01

Aren't beans one of your 5 a day?

YANBU, I love skin heads on a raft Grin

BelieveInRainbows · 09/10/2021 07:05

YANBU. My kids have spaghetti hoops on toast once a week, it's their favourite (because they're weirdos and don't like beans!). Won't kill them.

girlmom21 · 09/10/2021 07:06

He's a moron. Next time he can stay home and prepare their meals if it's that big an issue.

YANBU. My 2yo loves beans on toast.

emlouwat · 09/10/2021 07:06

This used to be my fave meal as a kid

londonrach · 09/10/2021 07:06

Dh had it last night as he felt like it. Yanbu. Great meal

rrhuth · 09/10/2021 07:07

He sounds like a real catch, criticising you like that Hmm

My kids ate beans on toast at times, it is filling, cheap, full of fibre.

I'd tell him he can menu plan and cook from now on.

PixelLily · 09/10/2021 07:08

My two year old will only eat 'butter sandwich' at the moment, I'd love to be able to get some beans on there, so definitely YANBU

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/10/2021 07:10

Its one meal. Nutrition happens across the week, not one meal...

If all they ate was beans and toast at every meal he may have a point.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/10/2021 07:11

We love beans on toast here (especially with the sausages and some cheese on too), he doesn't get to complain about what you feed them if he's out with friends and your holding down the Fort at home.

ivykaty44 · 09/10/2021 07:11

Your oh is yabu

If he hadn’t been out eating fried chicken he could have been home cooking his children what he considered a nutritional dinner.

Beans on toast is full of fibre, bread is fortified with vitamins ( unless homemade bread, which obviously is not) beans are nutritious

ZenNudist · 09/10/2021 07:12

Yanbu. It's nutritious and quick. Sometimes quick is needed.

We all had cheese toasties for tea yesterday. Dc went to 3 activities after school I was working and dh decided on toasties. I'd said to do chicken and lamb wraps with leftovers and salad so my easy Friday idea wasn't health food.

Cam2020 · 09/10/2021 07:14

It's what my daughter had last night too! She'd had her school dinner at lunchtime and a snack before I got home from work.

Nothing wrong with beans in toast! It's a perfect quick dinner.

Badabingbadabum · 09/10/2021 07:15

Yanbu! I always look at what dc eat over a week. If that balances out I am very happy to give them beans on toast or chicken nuggets and beans for a couple of meals. Sometimes it is very beige food heavy and I vow to do better the next week! Blush

I presume you're going to leave it to your dh to plan and cook some nutritious meals which are up to his high standards?

Dentistlakes · 09/10/2021 07:17

We have beans on toast usually once a week if we’re short of time or I don’t want to cook. I know everyone will eat it, it’s quick and more economical and healthier (imo) than most carry outs. If I feel more veg is needed I just serve some cut up veg or salad on the side. The only issue might be they are quite high in sugar but there are low sugar ones you can get, although they don’t taste as nice!

Coffeeonmytoffee · 09/10/2021 07:18

I really want beans on toast now…

When I was a kid on Saturdays my mum did t want to cook so we had bread and bits. Yum

Theoscargoesto · 09/10/2021 07:32

In our house we argue about whether to have beans on toast with cheese or cheese on toast with beans…… perfectly balanced meal either way.

Redsquirrel5 · 09/10/2021 07:36

He is wrong beans on toast ( especially if wholemeal bread) is very nutritious.

snackcurator · 09/10/2021 07:37

YANBU - beans on toast with a bit of cheese is a well balanced meal.

Longdistance · 09/10/2021 07:39

Yanbu. If he wanted the kids to have a nutritious four course dinner he could’ve stayed at home and cooked it himself.
