Beans on toast for dinner

Last night my DH was out with friends, came home and got huffy as I gave the kids beans on toast for dinner. 'That's not very nutritious' he moans. (He himself chose to have fried chicken for dinner)

In my defence: I work full time, had spent the day doing serious amounts of household crap during my free moments (was WFH) and my youngest actually asked for beans on toast.

YANBU - beans on toast is a perfectly decent Friday night meal.

YABU - you slovenly mother, where were the veggies and organic quinoa

@BigPyjamas

Ha ha, make pork schnitzel as a quick supper for a 5yr old whilst also trying to finish work ( late data from team member for weekly report - not my incompetence) and put away food delivery which arrived later than expected.

Sadly I had no pork escalopes or chicken breasts handy. I could have made an omelette, that would have been healthier. Or baked sweet potatoes with beans.

Does anyone know if fried pork in breadcrumbs is less healthy than low salt beans on toast?

I was working full time with 3 kids and yes, schnitzels were a quick meal with a salad on the side.

I expect you have a freezer with basic items like chicken, pork and fish that can be defrosted and quickly prepared.

Pork steaks are one of the healthy meats we can eat with little fat content. Quickly tossing them breadcrumbs, fresh egg and deep frying in vegetable oil is certainly more healthy for a child (or an adult) than a can full additives, sodium and salt.

If you don't like what I say, move on to the next post. This is AIBU.

You need cheese on top!

PurpleDaisies · 09/10/2021 10:31

You cannot compare cooking schnitzel from scratch with making beans on toast. It’s ridiculous to suggest it’s similar.

burritofan · 09/10/2021 10:31

You can make a chicken/pork schnitzels with a side of tomato, cucumber and olive oil that will take you 15 minutes to prepare.
This is such a bizarrely specific alternative it’s hilarious.

Beans on toast is perfectly fine. Last week DD wanted only beans, no toast, so that’s what she had: an entire tin of the things. (Boring low-sugar low-salt ones, before the health brigade jumps on me.) If you did it daily, it’s a problem. But the parent not on duty doesn’t get to critique unless you’re doing something you’ve together agreed not to do, or is properly bonkers – eg jelly for dinner

Autumnleaves4 · 09/10/2021 10:33

I would say beans on toast (wholemeal) healthier than fried pork. But the two are not mutually exclusive, my two younger ones love beans on toast with cheese and see it as a treat as we don’t have it very often.

Alondra · 09/10/2021 10:33

*Whereas in the real world, beans on toast is a totally normal meal.

Not like schnitzel, tomato and cucumber.*

Depending what world you are talking about. I'm a Spaniard and NO ONE in Spain will feed their kids a can of beans on toast.

Majority of working families will feed them filete empanado con ensalada.

My DF loved beans on toast and would have it at every possible opportunity. One of my favourite memories is he and I having beans on toast for tea.

If your DH doesn't like it then he can do all the cooking!

NoSquirrels · 09/10/2021 10:33

Pork in breadcrumbs deep fried in vegetable oil is not “healthier” than legumes in a tomato sauce served with bread.

As part of an overall healthy balanced diet both are perfectly reasonable meals, however, each to their own.

I’d rather eat the schnitzel, my DC would rather eat the beans on toast. Over a week/month everyone gets the opportunity to eat everything.

Not every meal needs to be freshly prepped from scratch.

Autumnleaves4 · 09/10/2021 10:34

I can see why your DH wouldn’t want it, especially on a Friday night but I’m not clear if he had chicken takeaway? As there was nothing else or if it was never planned for him to have beans on toast. If he’s just moaning at you for feeding tgat to the kids he’s an arse.

maddiemookins16mum · 09/10/2021 10:35

DD had beans on toast with an egg on top most Wednesday nights before Brownies for 5 years.

KurtWilde · 09/10/2021 10:35

I'm clearly failing at this parenting lark because my lot have eaten loads of processed foods over the years - tinned and frozen!

Loveshelly · 09/10/2021 10:36

I think I’m going to have this for dinner tonight!

Fucking pork schnitzel- really!!!

FinallyHere · 09/10/2021 10:37

Does he usually pull his weight with childcare and the household. Coming back from a night off to criticise your choices doesn't sound great TBH.

However, if he is offering to make the 'real thing' himself, I'd step back snd let him crack on.

Made me think of Delia Smith who was said to have replied ' delicious, but it takes so long' when someone suggested beans on toast as a quick meal.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/10/2021 10:37

I wonder if the sales if beans are up toda, I've bought 3 tins of sausage and beans of the back of this thread. I think we might have them for breakfast tomorrow.

PurpleDaisies · 09/10/2021 10:38

Depending what world you are talking about. I'm a Spaniard and NO ONE in Spain will feed their kids a can of beans on toast.

Funnily enough, I was talking about Britain because that’s where most of us are.

My post was missing a word-I meant to say that beans on toast is a normal QUICK meal. Nobody really thinks cooking schitzel from scratch is a super quick meal? I could have the whole beans meal done in the time it took to defrost the chicken.

5thnonblonde · 09/10/2021 10:39

Lolz. DD gets crumpets for tea on Wednesdays- she has a roast dinner for lunch at school and doesn’t get in from rainbows until 7. In Spain don’t the kids get an early snack/sandwich tea at like 4 anyway? Before joining the adults for a much later dinner. I lived with a family for a year in my teens and that’s what they did anyway...

Scottishmarigold · 09/10/2021 10:40

YANBU Perfectly ok.

DressBitch · 09/10/2021 10:40

I never have beans on toast.

I hate soggy bread so I have beans with toast. YANBU, OP. Now I fancy my version. 🤣

Goldbar · 09/10/2021 10:41

I'm clearly failing at this parenting lark because my lot have eaten loads of processed foods over the years - tinned and frozen!

Well, clearly the winning formula is to go out for a relaxing evening with friends and leave the parent on duty with strict instructions to whip up a healthy organic feast Hmm.

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 09/10/2021 10:41

I don't like beans on toast. Cheese toasties however are a perfectly acceptable meal once in a while. 😁

Alondra · 09/10/2021 10:45

This is such a bizarrely specific alternative it’s hilarious

I'm glad you are finding it hilarious. I don't see the funny anywhere.

The schinizel was a suggestion like it could have been the omelette the OP mentioned, pasta with a bit of olive oil and bacon etc.

The point I made is that there is a whole world of quick nutricious meals to give kids in between canned beans on toast and quinoa which was her AIBU

Done with the subject. It's becoming ridiculous now.

NoSquirrels · 09/10/2021 10:47

The quinoa was a joke. British humour!

There are loads of quick nutritious meals that can be made. Beans on toast is one of them.

Sloth66 · 09/10/2021 10:49

Had Beans and cheese on toast for lunch yesterday. Nice quick lunch.
Yanbu

5thnonblonde · 09/10/2021 10:52

@Alondra your suggestions are v pork heavy- you know processed pork is pretty much nutritionally void?

TheGoogleMum · 09/10/2021 11:04

Yanbu beans on toast is great for a quick easy meal. I guess beans can be sugary? It's healthier than I think it is perceived as beans are actually pretty good!
