Beans on toast for dinner

Last night my DH was out with friends, came home and got huffy as I gave the kids beans on toast for dinner. 'That's not very nutritious' he moans. (He himself chose to have fried chicken for dinner)

In my defence: I work full time, had spent the day doing serious amounts of household crap during my free moments (was WFH) and my youngest actually asked for beans on toast.

YANBU - beans on toast is a perfectly decent Friday night meal.

YABU - you slovenly mother, where were the veggies and organic quinoa

Still love beans on toast, as do my DC. Perfectly acceptable dinner for any age.

Klac30 · 09/10/2021 09:14

YANBU. We all have those evenings we can't be assed to cook and there is certainly nothing wrong with it. I had a banging headache this week (migraine sufferer) Dd got given super noodles one night and had tomato soup another. I didn't feel guilty, she'd also had a meal at school. Generally we we eat good meals but sometimes it just doesn't happen.

Also, can't beat beans on toast sometimes 😅

Alondra · 09/10/2021 09:15

YABU.

Only because there is a medium term in between beans on toast (canned beans have one the highest sodium in all canned food) and being a slovenly mother for not feeding them quinoa (who does that ffs). You can make a chicken/pork schnitzels with a side of tomato, cucumber and olive oil that will take you 15 minutes to prepare.

There is plenty of nutricious foods quickly to prepare in between quinoa and a can of baked beans. Your AIBU seem to be on both extremes.

ScottChegg · 09/10/2021 09:17

He's so wrong! I don't even like baked beans (it's the sauce) but he's wrong.

Here's the proof.

sashh · 09/10/2021 09:21

The only thing better than beans on toast is with a rasher of well cooked bacon.

sendaisnow · 09/10/2021 09:22

Who are these men and who do they think they are ?

BigPyjamas · 09/10/2021 09:27

Ha ha, make pork schnitzel as a quick supper for a 5yr old whilst also trying to finish work ( late data from team member for weekly report - not my incompetence) and put away food delivery which arrived later than expected.

Sadly I had no pork escalopes or chicken breasts handy. I could have made an omelette, that would have been healthier. Or baked sweet potatoes with beans.

Does anyone know if fried pork in breadcrumbs is less healthy than low salt beans on toast?

@Alondra DH, is that you??? Wink

If the OP had come on here and said 'AIBU to regularly feed my DC beans on toast' you might have a point. But one parent doesn't get to fuck off out for the evening and then criticise what the other parent feeds the kids. The OP is not a paid nanny (and tbh I would have no issue with a nanny/nursery giving beans on toast occasionally).

MeltedCheeseonTop · 09/10/2021 09:37

I really fancy beans on toast now.

titchy · 09/10/2021 09:50

Unless they were topped with several handfuls of melted cheese YABU.

Gherkingreen · 09/10/2021 09:52

I actively choose to have beans on toast for lunch or tea. It's healthy, filling, quick and cheap.

DotsandCo · 09/10/2021 09:52

I hope you told him to fuck off!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/10/2021 09:54

Perfectly good! And who gets to go out with friends and then come home and complain about the person who enabled you to do that ?

Next time he can stay home and do a dinner that’s up to his standards!

TheKeatingFive · 09/10/2021 09:56

They're certainly better than fried chicken

Blindleadingtheblind · 09/10/2021 10:00

I love skin heads on a raft completely forgot this saying. Made me chuckle as we used to say it when we were younger and I've not said it in probably 20+ years.

Sorry for thread derail. OP, YANBU.

@EllieSattler

Beans ON toast is wrong as the toast gets soggy and disintegrates. Grim.

Beans WITH toast is absolutely fine.

Yes! My husband thinks I’m weird for doing this but I cannot bear soggy toast.
KurtWilde · 09/10/2021 10:14

Maybe I'm a heathen but I love the soggy toast!

ClareBlue · 09/10/2021 10:20

Beans on toast is fine as an option.
One parent going out and coming in and critising the other for giving their children it, not do fine.
And, yes, we had it once every couple of weeks as children.

Alondra · 09/10/2021 10:21

I find your attitude insulting to be frank. You asked for the AIBU and I answered what I thought. There is no need for sarcasm or being patronising.

Whereas in the real world, beans on toast is a totally normal meal.

Not like schnitzel, tomato and cucumber. Confused

My youngest hates beans ON toast because of this, for me it's the best bit.

He has beans WITH toast, toast on a plate, beans in a dish.

DazzleDrops · 09/10/2021 10:27

Beans on (wholemeal) toast is lovely. With a fried egg is even better.

When I was little I used to love fish fingers and beans.

Beans are highly nutritious - far better than fried chicken!

HarrisMcCoo · 09/10/2021 10:28

YANBU. Nothing wrong with this for a quick dinner for the family now and again.

PurpleDaisies · 09/10/2021 10:29

That’s still our favourite can’t be bothered to cook meal (with oven chips).
