Beans on toast for dinner

Last night my DH was out with friends, came home and got huffy as I gave the kids beans on toast for dinner. 'That's not very nutritious' he moans. (He himself chose to have fried chicken for dinner)

In my defence: I work full time, had spent the day doing serious amounts of household crap during my free moments (was WFH) and my youngest actually asked for beans on toast.

YANBU - beans on toast is a perfectly decent Friday night meal.

YABU - you slovenly mother, where were the veggies and organic quinoa

It's actually my favourite meal yanbu (unless there was no cheese on the beans!)

rainbowstardrops · 09/10/2021 08:31

My children used to love beans on toast with grated cheese on top for tea!
If your DH is so concerned about their nutrition then maybe he should prioritise feeding his children himself over socialising with friends?

Rosesareyellow · 09/10/2021 08:34

Beans are very nutritious.
If the kids enjoyed it, what’s the problem?
I personally would want something a bit more exciting or indulgent on a Friday night - but I’m not a kid. Kids don’t care, they love beans on toast.

Sparkletastic · 09/10/2021 08:39

YANBU plenty of calcium, fibre and protein in cheesy beans on toast.

Goldbar · 09/10/2021 08:39

If he has a problem with what you're feeding them, he can stay home and do the cooking himself.

You're not his employee.

Tbh, in your shoes I'd be ordering Happy Meals all round tonight just to piss him off some more.

Getyourownback · 09/10/2021 08:41

He’s being a twat, and a stupid twat at that. Beans are really nutritious. They’re legumes!

Whitegrenache · 09/10/2021 08:42

@girlmom21

He's a moron. Next time he can stay home and prepare their meals if it's that big an issue.

YANBU. My 2yo loves beans on toast.

This- it could be shit with sugar on and your dp has no right to criticise

Tell him to fuck off

floweroverload · 09/10/2021 08:42

It's what we had last night too!

EvilPea · 09/10/2021 08:44

Twat

It’s a regular in this house for the convenience and those “not that hungry” nights.

Sn0tnose · 09/10/2021 08:44

Love beans on toast, especially with a little bit of scrambled egg. No cheese though, I’m not a monster.

Yanbu for so many reasons. Beans are full of fibre and protein. Even if they do have sugar in them, they are still better than fried food, which is a contributing factor to weight gain, high cholesterol and heart attacks in men of a certain age, so he’d be better off worrying about his own nutrition rather than anyone else’s. Lastly, I assume he’ll be taking an equal role in meal planning etc from now on?

EmeraldShamrock · 09/10/2021 08:46

I love beans on toast. I add a hash brown and boiled egg that's my midweek dinner it is very filling.

Nothing wrong with it. I have done the same after a busy day.

listsandbudgets · 09/10/2021 08:52

Well if it was beams on toast for 21 meals a.week and snacks in between he may have a point but every now and then nothing wrong with it.

DD would have tinned macaroni cheese every single day if I let her!!

EllieSattler · 09/10/2021 08:54

Beans ON toast is wrong as the toast gets soggy and disintegrates. Grim.

Beans WITH toast is absolutely fine.

CouldWeStartAgainPlease · 09/10/2021 08:54

YANBU. I'd be seriously pissed off if DH tried to criticise what I'd fed the kids while he was out, unless it was something actually dangerous. Something delicious and nutritious? He's off his trolley

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 09/10/2021 08:55

As kids this was one of our favourite meals. Mum would heat up beans, tinned tomatoes and do a big pan of scrambled eggs. Huge mound of toast and some softened butter on the table then we'd top the toast with whichever of the things we wanted. Best dinner of the week.

Wash your mouth out!

Whilst I agree, if you start calling it “beans with toast” people with think you’re nuts. “Beans on toast” just means beans on the same plate as toast.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 09/10/2021 09:03

Beans on toast is my favourite meal

MyrealnameisBernard · 09/10/2021 09:07

I'm going to have that now for breakfast

EmeraldShamrock · 09/10/2021 09:08

I use a pasta bowl set my toast on the side and scoop my beans for each bite.
It doesn't have to be soggy, I hate soggy food.

Peggytheredhen · 09/10/2021 09:11

Beans on toast is very nutritious!

My favourite meal as a child. (And student).

UniversalAunt · 09/10/2021 09:12

Low sugar beans are improved by a knob of butter as they heat through.
