Beans on toast for dinner

Last night my DH was out with friends, came home and got huffy as I gave the kids beans on toast for dinner. 'That's not very nutritious' he moans. (He himself chose to have fried chicken for dinner)

In my defence: I work full time, had spent the day doing serious amounts of household crap during my free moments (was WFH) and my youngest actually asked for beans on toast.

YANBU - beans on toast is a perfectly decent Friday night meal.

YABU - you slovenly mother, where were the veggies and organic quinoa

YANBU, he is being ridiculous 🙄

Nothing wrong with beans on toast or similar once in a while.

We usually have (shop bought) soup/sandwiches/something on toast once a week as DS have beevers. We're all still here!

It was the 'in my defence...' line of the op that got to me. Why on Earth do you need to justify to yourself, or anyone, whether you fed your children a meal good enough in their fathers eyes? Especially when the meal is, patently, absolutely fine. (Neglected children aside, clearly not the case here).

Raise your bar op, seriously.

I intend having beans on toast later on today for supper, looking forward to it.

Blackberrybunnet · 09/10/2021 13:17

YANBU. Beans on toast is delicious and nutricuoius. even better, as some have suggested, with cheese on top. Or a poached egg. Or (for me) some jalapeño peppers stirred in.
@sashh I put bread in the toaster Grin
LOL yes I meant bread obviously, I had a friend from Jordan who called toast, "hot bread"

BurntO · 09/10/2021 13:20

When else are you supposed to eat beans on toast!? Do they have more nutrients at lunch timeConfused

Jduh · 09/10/2021 16:10

I regularly do beans on toast on a Thursday as eldest goes to rainbows and it's so quick around finishing at 5, picking up youngest from nursery and getting eldest to Rainbows for 5.45.

I love cheese and bean toasties for dinner when I need comfort food.

Beans on toast leads to soggy bread, lethargy and death. My life has change since I discovered toast on beans. Crispy toast right to the end of the meal means success!

Sciurus83 · 09/10/2021 17:01

We had beans on toast for lunch as a direct result of this thread

BikeRunSki · 09/10/2021 18:12

DD likes beans and toast, rather than on toast. She hates soggy bread, although it’s my favourite bit!

HoppyHop · 09/10/2021 18:27

@PixelLily

My two year old will only eat 'butter sandwich' at the moment, I'd love to be able to get some beans on there, so definitely YANBU
Aww, this made me go all prickly eyed. My now 14yo DD use to say this when she was younger (with added hand movement for effect, as if I didn't know what a sandwich was!).

Beans on wholemeal toast with a bit of egg is one of the most nutritious meals you can have! He is being v v unreasonable.

blackstripe · 09/10/2021 20:53

YANBU

Mine had cheese on toast with beans for tea tonight, ate more of it than he did the nutritious home-cooked lunch 🤦‍♀️. Don't know why I bother!
