I think we've all been a bit worried about the ol' money now you can't buy petrol or food and all the gas is really expensive, plus universal credit has got cut. But thankfully the government says we'll all be paid more instead. This is brilliant news! I'm really looking forward to it. Aren't you?

Ooh yes, just can't wait Hmm

bizboz · 06/10/2021 18:26

Yep, teacher here. Can't wait for my wage increase. Oh no, I'll actually be getting a pay freeze.

HepzibahNutter · 06/10/2021 18:30

I'm pretty sure that pay freeze means more money because both Johnson and Raab have said multiple times that we're all going to get this money.

Maybe you just don't understand properly? You're probably not rich enough to understand properly yet.

I’m going to level up to level 157. So excited too.

HepzibahNutter · 06/10/2021 18:33

Hurrah for that.

Brilliant - and with all the low taxes we’ll be able to give tonnes of cash to the NHS. ITS LIKE UTOPIA.

Maverickess · 06/10/2021 18:34

Are we?
I work in social care, are they going to ensure that this NI increase doesn't end up in profits of providers then (If it even gets that far) while they pay the minimum of staff the minimum wage?
At this stage I'd settle for enough staff to do the job properly than a pay rise if I'm honest.

Ah well if Raab said it, it must be true. That guy never gets things wrong....
Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 06/10/2021 18:36

So no minimum wages anymore!! Hurrah!

Donotgogentle · 06/10/2021 18:36

It’s really great! And prices will probably be going down soon.

worrybutterfly · 06/10/2021 18:37

I'm just waiting to see if this pay rise applies to the £150 statutory maternity pay.

And if it's enough for me to be able to afford to return to work with 2 children who need childcare. Or if I just end up better off not working and paying taxes .

It's a piss-take, Maverick.

Of course were not getting more money. It's a jolly jape from Johnson to sound good.

HepzibahNutter · 06/10/2021 18:40

I think you won't even notice the ni increase, you'll have that much money. Lovely lovely money.

Did you know that earning £17k in 1999 is the same as earning £30k today? When you look at inflation, that is. So all of those admin/hospitality/care/retail jobs that paid £17k in 1999, the people doing those same jobs rn are really already earning £32k. In a way. And now they're going to get even more! Praise be!

I think you'll find Boris actually said we need to all get better paid jobs. He's right and I'll be handing in my notice immediately so I'm available for my new career as a Magic Circle lawyer.

Because of course all of us can and should do that, every single one of us. The country doesn't need any teachers, teaching assistants, care workers, charity workers, nurses, cleaners, shop assistants, etc.

Sciurus83 · 06/10/2021 18:41

I can't wait! Almost a decade of pay freeze in the civil service in one of the most poorly paid departments, it's going to be brilliant! I wonder how much we will get, maybe I can afford a house near a good school....IMAGINE!

HepzibahNutter · 06/10/2021 18:42

Sorry, they're really earning £30k rn. In a way. Not £32k. In a way. Got a bit carried away with myself tsk tsk.

Praise be indeed! Grin

I heard that DfT are planning to pave the streets of Newcastle with gold. Part of the levelling up strategy. I'm looking forward to that!

adawong · 06/10/2021 18:44

No problem getting fuel or food, energy prices have gone up everywhere and UC has not been cut . Why post shit like this?

I’m sure the government will set an example by giving all government employees a massive pay rise.
buttermutt · 06/10/2021 18:50

I'm super excited by the high wages & low tax future, not sure how to circle that square!

HepzibahNutter · 06/10/2021 18:50

@Sciurus83 I KNOW! I was getting all worried for a bit I'll be honest. You know, £90 a month down with my NI increase and my UC cut, plus my energy provider's gone bust taking all my credit with them (not before one last sneaky little direct debit hours beforehand tho lol those cheeky scamps) and I'll doubtless get gouged arseless by whichever I'm allocated.

So truth to tell I was feeling a bit bleak.

But now I know I'll just get loads more pay, well, it's a weight off my mind let me tell you. Hurrah for Ra(rara)ab!

RandomLondoner · 06/10/2021 18:50

I'm paying only limited attention to the news, but I doubt anyone is claiming that people will be generally be paid more to do the same jobs they've always done. (Those whose wages were depressed by immigrant competition may be the exception.)

I suspect the aspiration is to increase wages be increasing peoples skills so their work is worth more.

Perhaps I'm wrong, can anyone link to what's actually been said?

RandomLondoner · 06/10/2021 18:52

Satire isn't that funny when it's based on obviously wrong facts.

No problem getting fuel? I must have sat outside a petrol station in a queue for over an hour this morning for a laugh I suppose, along with all the others in the queue. It’s great we all have so much free time that we can just enjoy petrol station queues for the fun of it…

I cant wait for more money. Maybe Sunak could spare some, i read he's had planning permission for his swimming pool complex at his mansion. But hey we're levelling up so thats fine.
