I think we've all been a bit worried about the ol' money now you can't buy petrol or food and all the gas is really expensive, plus universal credit has got cut. But thankfully the government says we'll all be paid more instead. This is brilliant news! I'm really looking forward to it. Aren't you?

I work in the cultural sector. Wages are really crap (I have an MA and several years of experience so I don't even mean entry level). I'm definitely looking forward to it! Grin as will most of the sector. Whoop whoop

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 07/10/2021 08:10

@malificent7

Why do people vote for these fools?
Have you checked out the other sets of numpties?
HesterAndPearlInBrightSunshine · 07/10/2021 08:17

Still not a good reason to bow to whatever this current lot tells us. Maybe we should all take MN's classic advice and raise our standards...

stillcrazyafterall · 07/10/2021 08:17

Yippee this probably means that once NI goes up I won't be on minimum wage! I'm a CS. Confused

Lifeisaminestrone · 07/10/2021 08:18

@buttermutt I believe the NI hike is to be used as a fund so no individual has to pay +£80k or so from their own personal wealth.

I don’t think the aim is necessarily to improve services!

Do check though.

Liz1tummypain · 07/10/2021 08:19

I don't know why anyone would believe that nonsense. It's a dream.

Peregrina · 07/10/2021 08:22

I suspect the aspiration is to increase wages be increasing peoples skills so their work is worth more.

I know that it was piffle and waffle to please the party faithful at Conference.

Pinklioness · 07/10/2021 08:32

Of course there's going to be a wage increase.

For politicians.

Because they're the only people who actually vote for their own pay levels.

Acis · 07/10/2021 08:32

I'm sure my charity employers are terribly excited about all the extra money they're going to make in order to pay me.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/10/2021 08:34

Yes will be great as a civil servant because I thought we were getting a pay freeze. This will be a much nicer reward for working every day of the pandemic.

CasparBloomberg · 07/10/2021 08:34

I think we will all get some magic seeds as part of a revitalising the economy package. We plant them and our magic money trees will be ready by the spring local elections.

I’ll go and get my spot in the garden ready for it [grins]

Boris's positivity in the face of adversity is admirable. He can crack jokes and laugh as Universal Credit is cut and people have to live on £53 a week. He talks about a British Renaissance, whilst there are massive labour shortages, skills shortages, food shortages and fuel shortages. Did he mention our success with the vaccine programme? Well, despite this, we still have the highest number of coronavirus cases in Europe.

Boris is a showman. He is amusing to watch. His lies and talk of this country becoming a high-tech giant when there is no real commitment to investing industry and training are comical in their absurdity.

I wish there was an alternative to this government, I really do. Because the last thing a country needs when it is on its knees, is a charismatic liar who will say anything to make the public feel good and keep him in power.

High wages and unicorns - yes, I believe you Boris.

merrymouse · 07/10/2021 08:41

I’m interested to know what BJ will say the next time public sector workers go on strike - using the new rules presumably he will just have to pay them more?

Itsnotallaboutyoubaby · 07/10/2021 08:43

@HepzibahNutter

I think you won't even notice the ni increase, you'll have that much money. Lovely lovely money.

Did you know that earning £17k in 1999 is the same as earning £30k today? When you look at inflation, that is. So all of those admin/hospitality/care/retail jobs that paid £17k in 1999, the people doing those same jobs rn are really already earning £32k. In a way. And now they're going to get even more! Praise be!

Glad to see your sarcastic.

Farce isn’t it? B***ds

GrandmasCat · 07/10/2021 08:47

I am so looking forward to my pay rise, considering my new energy bill has wiped off the salary increases I managed to get over 5 years. I am thrilled to hear the news!

I’m also thrilled that we have become a country where gods jokes are more important than good policy, who would have thought dear Boris would reshape the country including a brand new take on the old stiff upper lip!

Let’s rejoice! Praise to Boris.

This thread is depressing and hilarious in equal measure. Thanks for the laughs, I needed that.

Also think this could be the start of civil unrest. People have had enough.

No worries, the party is going on, last polls show Boris popularity is consistently sky high. And why wouldn’t it be? He is defending us against everyone in the country trying to destroy our Brexit dreams. Yesterday he tackled the pro Brexit businesses, who would have thought? It wasn’t the immigration that was ruining the economy, it was these bastards that we called our friends! Shameful really.

We need a new church, we have enough dogma for a new faith!

Those jobs weren’t paid anywhere near 17k in 1999! 17k was a professional level salary
JaceLancs · 07/10/2021 09:05

If I have to pay my staff more - then I will have to also cut their hours!
Income is limited and budgets tight
Charity sector providing direct services to vulnerable people so we will have to turn even more people away
Sounds like a great plan - can’t wait!

GrandmasCat · 07/10/2021 09:07

It will work itself out nicely, I promise, with the energy bills and tax increases, they will not need to work so many hours anyway.

HepzibahNutter · 07/10/2021 09:10

@BungleandGeorge I was a secretary in 1999, for a small company on the outskirts of London. I earnt £19k for typing out letters from a dictation machine. The people who dictated the letters earnt at least £37k. Shortly after I went to work in the city and earnt £25k for typing out letters from a dictation machine. £17k was definitely definitely not a professional salary in 1999.

How do we find out what level we are on so we can track when we level up? Is there a government app for this?

SweeneyToddler · 07/10/2021 09:21

I’m not from, nor do I live in the UK so can’t share in your excitement.

This morning, as I was filling my car up with petrol after completing a supermarket shop with no empty shelves at all, I was lamenting how I’ve missed an opportunity to develop that Blitz Spirit that you lot seem to have in buckets.

Oh, and when the global zombie apocalypse hits, you’ll all be in a much better position to trade tins of meat thanks to your Build Back Barter initiative.

Bravo, Britain. Bravo.
