I think we've all been a bit worried about the ol' money now you can't buy petrol or food and all the gas is really expensive, plus universal credit has got cut. But thankfully the government says we'll all be paid more instead. This is brilliant news! I'm really looking forward to it. Aren't you?

Anyone know where I can apply for this job? I wouldn't find it really grim living on 81k so no pay rise needed

@ACPC

No mention that retail etc is already full of highly skilled graduates? (I am one) Upskilling doesn't guarantee a high paid job.
Ssshhhh! You're not supposed to say things like that, people might realise there's not enough higher skilled and paid jobs for everyone then!

www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/oct/06/michael-gove-to-push-homebuilding-in-the-north-of-england

Conservatives' form of levelling up- building lots of houses in the north (where houses are already cheap; the main reason if people can't afford them is due to lack of job opportunities) and none built in the south.

'Two central proposals in the reforms, announced under his predecessor Robert Jenrick, are expected to be largely abandoned.

In particular, the “zonal” approach, which would have seen local people unable to reject housing in areas designated for development, will be dropped. “That’s gone,” said one cabinet minister.

Mandatory housebuilding targets, which caused widespread alarm among southern Tories, are also expected to be overhauled.'

This will mean lots of southerners will move to the north as there would be hardly any new houses built in the south. Not sure how this benefits the north unless new jobs come too (would there be new jobs just because there is more housing?) Meanwhile the houses and flats without cladding in the south get more and more expensive, benefiting the developers and landlords. I am a London flat owner and am livid

@HepzibahNutter I do hate to rain on your parade OP, but you do realise that, being Scottish, for you this happy Tory Utopia maybe short lived? I mean, there’s a clear risk Scotland may go independent and then rejoin the EU. You’ll be forever excluded from this happy land of prosperity where we all have our own swimming pool complexes and so much money we just don’t know what to do with it. The horror! Just imagine - all that awful freedom of movement and workers’ rights and whatnot. Poor you. Doesn’t bear thinking about. Luckily for me, I live in Kent. Not being smug, just stating a fact. No chance anyone other than a Tory will ever get in round these parts. What a glorious future we can all look forward to in England. Blue passports! Imperial measurements! Something about Spitfires! Huzzah!

ilovechocolate07 · 08/10/2021 17:28

I'm really looking forward to being paid more highly for my grossly underrated skills, oh wait... they don't mean skilled workers disguised as unskilled. They mean made up new jobs!?!?

CeCeDrake · 08/10/2021 17:41

Yeah, praise be!

Morgysmum · 08/10/2021 17:42

How much is this going to be? I only ask as, with the minimum wage increase, its normally only 20p or 30p per hour, which sounds good, but before it comes in, your bus fair increases by 10p, then other things go up, so by the time, I get the extra in my wage, it's gone already.
I did think it's harsh to take away the extra universal credit, when the cost of gas and electricity has sky rocketed. That's without, the fuel going up and the increase in food prices.

Couchbettato · 08/10/2021 18:36

@HepzibahNutter

It goes up my arse Maverickess. Right up my boney Scottish arse.
Thank you for making me wet my second pair of knickers today with laughter rather than a sneeze.
RockyReef · 08/10/2021 19:02

I am dancing with glee after being on a civil service pay freeze in the lowest paid arms-length body for the last 11 years. I'm sure that if MPs are getting a good pay rise then I will get one too. I mean it's not as if they would give themselves a rise and not me when my job is to give expert scientific advice to them to use in their decisions (which we also advise them on). I know they've had pay rises periodically throughout the govt pay freeze but maybe they just forgot all of us minions.who actually do the work.....

Tigger1895 · 08/10/2021 19:27

@Donotgogentle

It’s really great! And prices will probably be going down soon.
Once price go up they rarely come back down by the same degree
Harmonypuss · 08/10/2021 19:27

How about all of us who can't work due to long-term ill health or disabilities?
We didn't get the extra £20/week that those on UC got, in fact my last benefit increase in April was a massive 67p/week.
How are we supposed to afford to survive when all these prices are increasing?
Those who were given that extra £20 are now complaining that they're losing it even though it was always temporary, I'd have loved to recruiter even one of those £20 payments, never mind every week for however long they all got them for!

Davygran · 08/10/2021 19:49

With my ma-hoooosive pay rise that I’m certain I’ll get really soon, I’m going to buy another herd/flock/horn of unicorns. There is so much more room for another few hundred on the sunlit uplands outside my house.

Tessabelle74 · 08/10/2021 19:50

Yep, I'm excited. The only problem is the price of bacon will be going up because of the flying pigs 😬

Roxy69 · 08/10/2021 21:19

Depends where you are I suppose. I drove in, filled up, and drove out within 5 minutes on Wednesday, no queue. No food shortages here either.

Owl55 · 08/10/2021 22:48

In your dreams love!

LadyofMisrule · 08/10/2021 23:19

I'm bloody loving the view from these sunlit uplands.

EthelMerman · 08/10/2021 23:26

Wow, sunlit uplands here we come. Can’t wait to level up - we’ll all get a proper pay rise instead of the paltry £400 which means maybe an extra £20 a month after tax. No more worrying about it not even covering a quarter of the fuel price rise my provider has inflicted on me. Hoorah for BoJo, one ring to rule them all. He’s finally done it.

Harmonypuss · 08/10/2021 23:26

I got fuel the other day too, in and out in 3mins, no queues whatsoever (Shirley, Birmingham).

Annie2245 · 09/10/2021 02:21

@knittingaddict

Of course UC has effectively been cut. Families have relied on the extra money for over a year now and they get used to budgeting with that extra. I'm quite surprised that it's been removed (naive I know) because I think it's a terrible idea to give money and then take it away like that.

If you saw the news last night - massively increased gas prices, increased council tax - then you would see that families will need that extra money more than ever.

It was made very clear though that it was a government initiative to help those affected by corona virus. The same as the self employed grants and furlough. It was never going to be a permanent increase. In fact the only reason everyone on uc got it was because it was too difficult to separate those working from those not. On legacy benefits only those on working tax credits were given it. So on any other benefit it was never given in the first place. People were warned repeatedly that it would stop the same time as furlough etc. The food and fuel increases are unfortunate but benefits aren’t increased when this happens routinely. It’s a shame benefits are now treated not as a stop gap between jobs but as a lifestyle choice. I don’t think people should be more than comfortably off on benefits it’s too easy not to work if that happens.
Maverickess · 09/10/2021 05:34

@Tessabelle74

😂
projuicehealth · 09/10/2021 08:59

I remember the 3 day week we were all promised because technology will reduce the work required!

Casiloco · 09/10/2021 08:59

@Annie2245

You've obviously never been on benefits, have you? Lucky, lucky you.

Back before the uplift, the U.K. Was already full of food banks and "just (not really) coping" families.

With fuel, food and other daily essentials all due to increase massively in price you think now is the time to remove the prop which is keeping some people alive and, relatively, well?

Well done. You get the lack of empathy prize for the week.

starlight13 · 09/10/2021 09:05

I just saw a pig flying past my window! Honestly, you can't make this stuff up.
Us poor little minions are now programmed to believe any old shit don't you know.

FilthyforFirth · 09/10/2021 09:22

I love these 'depends where you are I'm alright Jack' comments. Does it really matter that you can get fuel and food in the north if we can't in the South?! A shortage anywhere in the country is cause for alarm, no?

TinaWeymouthsBass · 09/10/2021 09:29

Didn't Gove repeatedly promise after brexit the supermarket shelves would've be awash with lovely really cheap food? Imagine how much cheap smoked salmon and caviar we'll be able to quoff with all our lovely highly skilled wages, definitely going to vote Tory next time... what a utopia.
