To think this is far too much food?

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 22:42

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

Marcella Hazan put celery in Bolognese.

I have Marcella Hazan's cookbook. It make's hilarious reading. I often think of her when I cook in a way that would annoy her.

on the OP, I can'timagine being annoyed at my grandsons' eating all the food cooked for them. Unless you are cooking for them everyday so need to worry about their diet, wouldn't you be happy they loved their dinner so much?

TheChippendenSpook · 01/10/2021 00:13

@Viviennemary

Its quite a lot for two children. But not enough for 4 people. Why didn't he do pasta with it.
In the first post it says they had it alongside pasta.
EL8888 · 01/10/2021 00:13

I was a hungry child as was my brother, we could have tore through that. We were pretty much eating adult portions by that stage

SofiaMichelle · 01/10/2021 00:14

Shock at the 12 portions from a 500g pack of mince post.

You might as well just use stock cubes instead.

That's practically a vegetarian recipe!

INeedNewShoes · 01/10/2021 00:16

I think that 'bolognese' needs to become a protected term. I'm too upset to sleep having read what some posters are putting in. 4 tins of tomatoes and lentils!? That just is not bolognese.

pelosi · 01/10/2021 00:16

Is he thick? Did he not realise you need to eat too?

Don’t cook for him, treat yourself to a takeaway.

pelosi · 01/10/2021 00:17

Sorry i’ve no idea why i’m posting like it’s dinner time 😂

MrsFlinch · 01/10/2021 00:23

500g mince will do us many meals. I use a large onion, 2 carrots and 3 sticks of celery plus at least the tomato tin filled with water, maybe mushrooms. I sometimes add spinach but only when serving. I grate cheese on top. My spaghetti portion size for kids that age is about one adult portion to share between 2. I can get at least 12 portions out of that maybe more

That’s not Bolognese that a stew! 😀

500g does four here, so I’d say too much for 2 children but if they ate it all must have been hungry!

MrsFlinch · 01/10/2021 00:29

I batch cook my bolognaise using 500g mince, 4 tins of tomatoes and loads of veg, sometimes add lentils too…that makes at least 2 meals for a family of 5 plus a bit left over

And that’s not bolognese, that’s soup!!😂

FrankButchersDickieBow · 01/10/2021 00:35

I agree with 2 small kids eating 500g of mince between them with some pasta is shocking

🤣🤣

My god. You are easily shocked. Rather dramatic too.

Ifyoudontlikeitdosomethingelse · 01/10/2021 00:39

This is what Grandads are for I feel.

Feed them up! I bet they enjoyed it and Grandad enjoyed himself too.

It will be OK in the morning OP. No ones hurt.

To be fair. It's traditionally made with carrots and celery!
SpidersAreShitheads · 01/10/2021 00:56

@LemonSherbetFancies

I made it for me and the kids, DP just wanted the pasta which he was going to add some pesto towards.

I agree with 2 small kids eating 500g of mince between them with some pasta is shocking.

“Shocking” 😂😂😂😂

Honestly, get over yourself. You haven’t said money is an issue so you’re put out that your grandchildren had a really big, filling meal and you had to make something else for your tea. The only thing that’s shocking is that you’re so pissed off that your own grandchildren ate a big meal that you’ve posted to MN in a rage.

The kids obviously were hungry. Nothing went to waste. No harm done. I’d say happy, fed kids is a win - I’m sure you could find something else to eat just for one night.

Piglet89 · 01/10/2021 01:04

We would get 5 descent size portions from a 500g packet easily

Descent size? Are these portions suitable for skydivers?

NotMyCat · 01/10/2021 01:04

This is the recipe I use before someone starts sobbing in a corner Grin
Says it serves 6

To think this is far too much food?
Piglet89 · 01/10/2021 01:06

@NotMyCat what the FUCK is the whole milk for?

myadhdusername · 01/10/2021 01:08

I love this thread.

OP are you sure they ate it all and none got binned?

NotMyCat · 01/10/2021 01:09
@NotMyCat what the FUCK is the whole milk for?
Grin I knew someone would spot that. It's actually pretty authentic/normal for ragu, you don't taste it but it kind of smooths out the flavour, makes it a bit richer and softens the meat, tones down any acidity too. I don't always add it as I usually have skimmed in and I'm not adding that to my precious ragu

Chouetted · 01/10/2021 01:09

I'm still recoiling from the person who suggested bulking out ragu with Dolmio.

Don't get me wrong, I like my Dolmio day, but it's totally different.

knitnerd90 · 01/10/2021 01:16

500g would be 4 people here but I'd add more than some onion and tomatoes.

12 portions? An ounce of meat per portion?

Also traditional bolognese has celery in It (and no chopped tomatoes, just some tomato purée)

knitnerd90 · 01/10/2021 01:17

If you ever want to upset northern Italians tell them how you make bolognese. It can practically come to blows.

MrsFlinch · 01/10/2021 01:23

To be fair. It's traditionally made with carrots and celery!

It was just everything included as a whole that made me chuckle!

I did know that carrots were used but honestly had no idea about celery, maybe because I absolutely hate celery so my mum would never use it in cooking, also never had a bolognese in a restaurant that included celery or even carrot for that matter!

I hate celery too. It's gross. I don't use it.

Ask an Italian. Most of them would hate us for what we have done to such a simplistic and tasty dish.

StellaCinnamon · 01/10/2021 01:34

Can someone give me a good Bolognese recipe?
I’m looking for a new one!

SailYourShips · 01/10/2021 01:40

I do not think that 1oz of meat-whether bulked out with huge amounts of veg or massive salads-would feed an adult or even a child or even my cat.

So I find it hard to believe that anyone could make 12 meals out of 500g of mince and wonder what on earth was the point of posting that nonsense.
