To think this is far too much food?

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

To be honest each child is different. My DD had to have adult portions from really young. Her nursery portion was never enough and she was tiny (she's still small!) When cooking pasta i need to cook the whole pack for the 2 of us (500g) (there may be a saucer portion left but usually after some time passes that soon dissapiears too). I remember going to certain family members when I was young and them dishing me portion that they thought was enough for me, I was too quiet and embarrassed to say I was still hungry.
The only point is I would be angry that they didn't leave me any not that they ate too much

Tbh, your DH sounds a bit of a d*ck. So he fed all the bolognese, which you had made, to DG, then expected you to make another meal when you came home from work? Your post has the wrong title. it should be ‘Is my DH a stupid pillock?’

Elle8344 · 03/10/2021 05:18

Depends on how much pasta was served with it. If it wasn't a lot then it wouldn't be as filling x

I think that that sums it up!

Far too much red meat for and 8 and 9 year old!
You could have added lots of fillers to it to reduce the saturated fat in the meal and left strict instructions for your DP about portion size.
Bolognaise is a pasta dominant meal not meat dominant.

Strict instructions about portion size. Like what? Demand only a thimbleful and there’ll be sanctions if the thimble is overflowing? Fillers, yes that’s the mn way, pack the fuck out of a dinner. Fill it with multiple ingredients to eke out 22 more portions Mn fillers are always Heaps of vegetables Chick pea Lentils Pulses Grated carrots Courgette Random spices eg curry powder, star anise I like to add Cuttlefish Tofu Tins of soup Ketchup Black beans Pinto beans Tomato purée
Carrick27 · 03/10/2021 14:36

If my kids had found courgette in their spag bol when they were young they’d have called childline. I don’t think I could stomach it either tbh

BiLuminous · 03/10/2021 15:27

You can't even tell it's in most stuff if you grate it in, Carrick. I grate it in a lot of stuff and I don't notice.

Wazzzzzzzup · 03/10/2021 15:33

Courgettes are great. And butternut squash is another great veg. Love it. I think butternut squash is now for apound in tesco
I couldn't really be bothered with just courgetti, but mixing hapf and half with spaghetti is lovely. Still filling but lighter.

I think the issue here is not how much there was made or how much was eaten - but that you were not considered. The fact is you thought about them and prepared a meal but nobody thought about you. YABU to count the amount eaten, that’s a moot point. But YANBU to feel hurt by their inconsiderate behaviour. Grandad should and the children should have put a portion (or alternative) aside for when you got home. If the children were still hungry after theirs - he could have given them a snack/desert/treat. Others have said most grandparents would let their grandchildren have anything - that’s also true for me - but that doesn’t mean people should take advantage or learn to share/consider others. Whether it was a small or large portion of food it should have been shared as intended x

Grandad yes, but an 8 and 9 year old should have thought "what of dinner for grandma?". That's an unreasonable thing to expect of them at that age tbh.

But she said she didn't tell him it was intended for her also..
appleturnovers · 03/10/2021 21:22

If the kids ate it all then it wasn't too much for them. Kids go through growth spurts etc and can have shockingly large appetites.

That said, you're definitely right to be miffed that he didn't even stop to wonder if you'd want any.

Absolutely spot on. If the kids were hungry then they were hungry. It's not their fault they ate what they were given. But grandad should have considered that the cook might want to eat too.
N1no · 03/10/2021 22:58

The trick here is to add some split lentils, carrots, celery and courgettes or other veggies. The lentil help to stretch the meat. It’s then also a question if your grandchildren are used to overeating or if they just have a good appetite.
I’m also German/French so always make a salad, preferably raw for starters and then a fruit or yogurt as dessert.

@EspressoDoubleShot, your comments have given me a much needed laugh as has this thread. Cuttle fish Grin

Robstersgirl · 04/10/2021 04:46

Sounds like the booby prize of bologneses. Without much to bulk it out I’m not surprised they ate the lot.
We have mince, carrot, courgette, onion, baby plum tomatoes, salad tomatoes, tinned tomatoes or passata. I also add a jar of bolognese sauce. It serves 5. Unless it’s bulked out it’s very easy to consume.
Mince, red onion and tinned toms isn’t bolognese.

CasperGutman · 04/10/2021 07:19

I know British people notoriously over-sauce their pasta, but a whole pan of ragu with two child-size portions of pasta is surely a new record?

I agree with your last sentence, but carrots, courgette and four kinds of tomatoes including a pre-made sauce isn't any recognisable Italian dish either!
singlemum43 · 04/10/2021 14:06

Yep probably was a little too much, but unless you left instructions on how much they should have I don’t see the issue, your children obviously really enjoyed it, the grandparents were kind enough to look after your children and make sure they were fed! I really wouldn’t get upset about it, it’s not worth it and next time
Just leave details re portion sizes!

Mirw · 04/10/2021 16:32

I have 2 brothers who from a very young age ate two or three large plates of food at every meal and then had pudding. Their children are exactly the same and none were fat. Some children have higher metabolic rates and need to eat more food. Be glad they are eating home cooked food and not rubbish.

Yerroblemom1923 · 04/10/2021 16:58

500g mince
Onion
Tin tomatoes
Celery
Carrots
Courgette
Mushrooms
Tom puree
Splash of balsamic vinegar
Splash of Worcestershire sauce
Beef stock cube
Spoon sugar
75g pasta per person

That will feed at least 4 people. Or 2 days in our household. Only husband and dd eat meat.

V hard to judge what is too much without knowing weight of mince or portion size of pasta.

Yerroblemom1923 · 04/10/2021 17:06

Oh and loads of garlic too, obvs!

FrozenoutofCostco · 04/10/2021 18:44

I expect they were only given a tiny amount of pasta to go with it so they filled up on the sauce
