To think this is far too much food?

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

Vegged out about 6 adult meals. Less veg about 3 but wouldn't enjoy it personally. Sounds like they may have enjoyed their food a little too much but unless it's a regular thing wouldn't worry about it

Wazzzzzzzup · 30/09/2021 23:40

I am pretty sure the 12 meals is a joke😁 Like 15 meals from 1.5kg chicken.

@TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits

There's so much wrong on this thread..

A poster making 500g of mince last TWELVE meals?
The amount of people putting celery in bolognaise?
Someone just saying that add a tin of beans to theirs?

I feel like I've just entered a parallel universe!

FWIW, I think 500g of mince is a lot for just the two kids - but they've eaten it now. So there's not much that can be done.
I'd be more annoyed if I had plated it up and they wasted it.

Celery is a standard part of soffrito that forms the base of any Ragu. It's weird not to have celery in Bolognese!
PurpleDaisies · 30/09/2021 23:45

Celery is totally normal and appropriate for s bolognese.

Hankunamatata · 30/09/2021 23:45

@Innovationstandard

I can get at least 12 portions out of that maybe more.

12???? wtaf?? Who are you, The Borrowers!!

Omg this made lol that dh had to ask what I was lol at
Percypigg · 30/09/2021 23:45

Did you rinse the mince??

Hankunamatata · 30/09/2021 23:48

Have to say a 500g mince would only do us one meal for 2 adults and 3 kids that with 2 bell peppers, 2 carrots, 2 onions, loads mushrooms.

CheshireChat · 30/09/2021 23:49

This makes me want bolognese, but I don't like it being meat heavy and I keep adding and adding veg and then I have a huge pot of bolognese to last me until the end of days Hmm

PickAChew · 30/09/2021 23:50

I have many saucepans, ranging from 14 to 20cm. Your post isn't very specific.

HairyFloppins · 30/09/2021 23:52

500g of mince usually just does the 2 or 3 of us. Me and DD polished off 500g off mince between the 2 of is the other night though. We were hungry.

But yes, smaller children, bulked out easily would have fed four. But they were hungry so no harm done.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 30/09/2021 23:52

Yes it was probably too much, but they ate it all so obviously hungry today and he will know better for next time.

250g mince each with half a can of tomatoes each plus a load of pasta would be big adult sized portions Grin

RahRahRa · 30/09/2021 23:52

Why can’t he just cook something else himself?

PickAChew · 30/09/2021 23:52

Though 500g of mince is a lot for 2 adults, never mind 2 kids. Should be enough for all 4.

Shellfishblastard · 30/09/2021 23:54

Yes it’s far too much. It would be enough for 2 adults and 2 children in our house. With a little leftover sometimes too. And we eat lots!

NotMyCat · 30/09/2021 23:55

It all depends how you make it and serve it
Is it sauce heavy, pasta heavy, do you have garlic bread and salad with it, what veg do you put in
Haven't made it in a while but I made cottage pie the other day with 500g mince and that made 6 portions. I tend to allow 100g mince (batch cook) when portioning and 75g dry pasta as a portion

INeedNewShoes · 30/09/2021 23:55

Did you rinse the mince??

You what now!?

RahRahRa · 30/09/2021 23:56

I batch cook my bolognaise using 500g mince, 4 tins of tomatoes and loads of veg, sometimes add lentils too…that makes at least 2 meals for a family of 5 plus a bit left over.

PickAChew · 30/09/2021 23:58

And, ffs - onion, carrot, celery are known as the holy trinity in Italian and French cookery. Celery is a normal ingredient in spag bog.

GrinGrinGrin This is amazing.
NowEvenBetter · 01/10/2021 00:00

Ooh, a food thread! Cue the MN women who say that merely glimpsing a grape leaves them full for weeks, eating a ‘massive salad’ is Christmas dinner, why did you give kids a meal so heavy in [whatever], I’m a size minus and I eat loads…loads being a thumbnail sized slice of avocado.😂
Your boyfriend fed your grandkids, they were hungry, they ate this (bland) food. The End.

CityCommuter · 01/10/2021 00:02

@LemonSherbetFancies yes 500g of mince is far too much for 2 children! Even for 2 adults it's too much considering you add lots of veg and spaghetti! We would get 5 descent size portions from a 500g packet easily...

AndThenInTheEnd · 01/10/2021 00:03

Four tins of tomatoes for one pack of mince!!!! That’s insane, is it soup?
Surely surely it’s one pack of soffrito (pre chopped) to one pack of mince to one tin of tomatoes?

Viviennemary · 01/10/2021 00:03

Its quite a lot for two children. But not enough for 4 people. Why didn't he do pasta with it.
