To think this is far too much food?

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 22:42

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

If two kids ate all of it, then you made just enough for two kids.

Innovationstandard · 30/09/2021 23:17

I can get at least 12 portions out of that maybe more.

12???? wtaf?? Who are you, The Borrowers!!

PurpleDaisies · 30/09/2021 23:18

If you want leftovers, you’ve got to dish them up into a separate bowl before serving everyone else.

mrsm43s · 30/09/2021 23:19

I'd expect 8 & 9 year olds to need bigger portions than their grandparents would need.

500g mince would feed 4 here, but we'd put far more veg in it than you did. There would be onion, celery and carrots, plus mushroom and spinach, plus I'd probably lob in any courgette, aubergine or peppers that needed using up too. And we'd likely serve a portion of broccoli along with the pasta
and bol too. So a much bulkier meal in total.

fleurbelle · 30/09/2021 23:19

@ZenNudist

I know you didn't specify exactly what size saucepan but we aren't talking milk pan and most pans up from the milk pan would hold more bolognaise than 2 portions.

500g mince will do us many meals. I use a large onion, 2 carrots and 3 sticks of celery plus at least the tomato tin filled with water, maybe mushrooms. I sometimes add spinach but only when serving. I grate cheese on top. My spaghetti portion size for kids that age is about one adult portion to share between 2. I can get at least 12 portions out of that maybe more.

How they managed to put away a whole pan I don't know. Even of your basic 1 onion plus tin tomato.

You are kidding right? Do you all eat a thimble full? My 16 year old could and would if I let him polish that off in one meal No probs
Clymene · 30/09/2021 23:19

So many things that are Shock

Two small children eating 500g of mince plus pasta

You saying you made it for you and your DP but he doesn't eat red meat

Your recipe

The poster saying she can feed 12 people from 500g mince.

Oy vey!

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 23:19

They did eat it all but they are big eaters. Doesn't mean its appropriate to give 2 kids that much.

HerRoyalNotness · 30/09/2021 23:21

Yes too much. 500g does 5 of us when H is here and 4 for 2 meals when he’s not. I put a can of beans in it, some spinach and mushrooms as well as tomatoes

DeepaBeesKit · 30/09/2021 23:21

The thing is, it's one meal. Yes clearly it would be too much at every meal.

However older people do sometimes forget how much children & teens eat.

My in laws (in their 60s/70s) seem to have tiny appetites these days and sometimes serve my rising 5 year old far too little food (he is very tall and weighs barely 3 stone so reasonably slim).

If I would let him, on a hungry day, he could eat that much spaghetti bolognese because he loves it. He would uncomfortably full for an hour or so afterwards.

Did they have a decent breakfast and lunch? Are they active kids? Overweight?

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 23:22

I made it for me and the kids, DP just wanted the pasta which he was going to add some pesto towards.

I agree with 2 small kids eating 500g of mince between them with some pasta is shocking.

Nah, it's the Remnant Fellowship Church Elders.
BurntO · 30/09/2021 23:24

Kids at 8 & 9 rarely eat what they can’t so they must have been hungry. 🤷🏼‍♀️ If OH served it up tell him that was your dinner and he can cook/sort food. No biggie. Nice that the grandkids eat your cooking ☺️

TableFlowerss · 30/09/2021 23:25

The irony, they’re stuffed to the brim and you’re starving 🥴

StoatMilk · 30/09/2021 23:27

Why do you have to cook OP, why can't your DP do it?

Wazzzzzzzup · 30/09/2021 23:28

Well, there are 3 people out of 4 who assumed it's two portions so... It's 2 portions🤷🏻

INeedNewShoes · 30/09/2021 23:28

500g meat makes enough for 4 adult portions here generally.

I'd be well miffed that none was saved for you though OP!

AmDillDandin · 30/09/2021 23:28

@LemonSherbetFancies

Was just beef mince, chopped tomatoes and some red onion
Well who could blame them then, it sounds so delicious Grin

Seriously though, it was thoughtless of him not to save you any.

AmberLynn1536 · 30/09/2021 23:29

Your 500gms bolognese sounds like a soup, I’m not surprised they drank it down, if you had put in peppers, mushrooms etc it would have taken longer to eat and filled them up more.

mrsm43s · 30/09/2021 23:30

So you made a meal for 3 that got split between 2?
Is that really such a big deal?
To my mind, the meal they ate was far too heavy on meat, but far too light on veg, so overall in portion size it probably balances out.
I'd expect growing 8&9 year olds to eat larger portions than anyone 50+

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 30/09/2021 23:31

There's so much wrong on this thread..

A poster making 500g of mince last TWELVE meals?
The amount of people putting celery in bolognaise?
Someone just saying that add a tin of beans to theirs?

I feel like I've just entered a parallel universe!

FWIW, I think 500g of mince is a lot for just the two kids - but they've eaten it now. So there's not much that can be done.
I'd be more annoyed if I had plated it up and they wasted it.

BurntO · 30/09/2021 23:33

Op I get the frustration but to start a thread over it? Just laugh about it and have some beans on toast and your grandkids will remember they never went hungry at your house.

arethereanyleftatall · 30/09/2021 23:33

Christ. Where to start?

  1. Saucepans/packs/standard size aren't actual sizes.
  2. Mince, tomato, red onion is not bolognaise.
  3. Yes, that's a lot of mince for children.
DameMaureen · 30/09/2021 23:34

Do you have a massive salad with it ?
Terminallysleepdeprived · 30/09/2021 23:36

500g of mince with just tomatoes and onions wouldn't necessarily feed 4, and certainly not 12. Surely you would need far more to bulk it out. By the time the mince is cooked it would do 3 decent portions if you are lucky.

I think you are massively overreacting sorry
