To think this is far too much food?

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

Annoyed at DH, not the kids

JorisBonson · 30/09/2021 22:52

Is 500g of mince going to be the new Mumsnet chicken?

WomanStanleyWoman · 30/09/2021 22:52

If they ate it all then wasn’t too much.

Exactly.

My grandmother used to give me and my sister tiny little dinners at that age, like we were still toddlers. We were always still hungry afterwards. Are you sure you’re still no feeding them like babies?

AlCalavicci · 30/09/2021 22:52

I am not going to get into a debate as to watch would go in spaghetti bolognese however that's a 250g pack of mince beef a tin of chopped tomatoes and one bed onion is not going to go very far at all this is why people bulk it out with mushrooms peppers then lentils and goodness knows what else.

Undisclosedlocation · 30/09/2021 22:52

If DP fed a meal for 4 to two people how do you get to be responsible for producing its replacement?

AlCalavicci · 30/09/2021 22:54

Oh heavens sorry about wrong words in my post , spell checker is on the war path

PinkSyCo · 30/09/2021 22:55

It seems quite a lot for just two kids but if they ate it all it obviously wasn’t too much. Depends also on how much pasta they had with it. As for you having to cook again, could your DH not knock something up?

VimFuego101 · 30/09/2021 22:55

We usually make a 500g pack of mince for spag Bol go between 3 of us. It could easily make leftovers if I bulked out the Bolognese mix with mushrooms. Was it just the mince or did he not think of adding pasta?

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 22:56

He has RA and struggles to cook which is why I did it.

He used about half a pack of pasta but that was for all 3 of them.
Then the mince all went to the kids. He doesn't eat red meat.

@LemonSherbetFancies

Was just beef mince, chopped tomatoes and some red onion
Please tell me there's more in it than that. I will be genuinely very sad if those three ingredients are what you call bolognese/ ragu.

Regardless, Two hungry pre-teen boys, yes I can see how they probably managed to eat most of that in one go.

ZenNudist · 30/09/2021 22:59

I know you didn't specify exactly what size saucepan but we aren't talking milk pan and most pans up from the milk pan would hold more bolognaise than 2 portions.

500g mince will do us many meals. I use a large onion, 2 carrots and 3 sticks of celery plus at least the tomato tin filled with water, maybe mushrooms. I sometimes add spinach but only when serving. I grate cheese on top. My spaghetti portion size for kids that age is about one adult portion to share between 2. I can get at least 12 portions out of that maybe more.

How they managed to put away a whole pan I don't know. Even of your basic 1 onion plus tin tomato.

I thought there was meant to be a portion each of the mince for you and him?
ZenNudist · 30/09/2021 23:01

Actually my two are 8 and 11 and get more adult serving of pasta but otherwise a ladle of sauce.

PegasusReturns · 30/09/2021 23:02

So it was a meal for three that was eaten by two? Had you made it clear you wanted some left for you?

Pedalpushers · 30/09/2021 23:04

500g mince would probably do DH and I for one full meal with leftovers for lunch, but I wouldn't be especially horrified that someone could eat 250g mince and pasta, I feel like it's a big portion but nothing gluttonous.

StCharlotte · 30/09/2021 23:06

My DP would be paying for Deliveroo.

AccountCreateUsername · 30/09/2021 23:07

As almost all pp have said, context is everything.

He should have made more pasta and added some Dolmio to bulk it out.
If they ate it all then it wasn’t too much IMO.
Unless they’re massive over eaters. Can you provide more context OP?

JustAReflektor · 30/09/2021 23:07

My DS (age 8 but waist size more like age 5) and DD (age 5 but still has room in in 2-3 shorts) can both easily eat generous adult portions of foods they love after a busy and active day. Spag bol is one of their favourites.

actingsergeant · 30/09/2021 23:12

Yes but DID THEY EAT IT

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 23:12

I just think it's ridiculous and common sense to not give 2 kids all that food.

PinkSyCo · 30/09/2021 23:13

It sounds like their meal was quite sauce heavy then. Lucky things Grin

We've found the bolognese equivalent of the infamous MN chicken!!!!
CiderWithLizzie · 30/09/2021 23:14

I would add 3 carrots, 3 sticks of celery, garlic and bay leaves as well, plus stock and wine. That would serve 4 of us with leftovers for the next day.

mantlepiece · 30/09/2021 23:15

I think the point is he should have made sure he left a portion for you and shared the rest out!
