To think this is far too much food?

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 22:42

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

@Ifyoudontlikeitdosomethingelse

This is what Grandads are for I feel.

Feed them up! I bet they enjoyed it and Grandad enjoyed himself too.

It will be OK in the morning OP. No ones hurt.

Except OP’s the one who cooked it and now has to cook again.

The kids were overdue to OP’s detriment. He should have divided the mince into 3 portions at least, and given dc extra spaghetti if they were hungry.

pelosi · 01/10/2021 01:44

*over fed

Badgerforbreakfast · 01/10/2021 01:45

My main concern here is someone mentioned serving broccoli with spag bol?!

Hahaha

Agreed ,but my main concern is why OP started this thread in the first place as it’s just ridiculous.

And I’m even more ridiculous for posting a comment.🙃

Geppili · 01/10/2021 02:24

@myadhdusername I reckon you have cracked it. He served it all out, without thinking about you. The kids couldn't eat it all because it was a bit flavourless.

Gingerkittykat · 01/10/2021 02:35

I've googled and a 7-10 year old child should have 2 portions of meat a day which are between 2-3 oz.

3oz of meat is roughly 75g, if they have no other protein in the day then 150g would be the maximum.

I would expect a 500g pack of mince to make 4 adult portions.

1forAll74 · 01/10/2021 02:38

Great that they have a good appetite, and liked the food that you cooked. You will have to make yourself a quick omelette now.

Pixxie7 · 01/10/2021 02:53

I would just be pleased that they enjoyed it, I really can’t see the problem.

Chunkymenrock · 01/10/2021 03:08

Carrots in bolognese are an abomination.

Lex345 · 01/10/2021 03:09

I grate carrot in ours, I think it makes it a bit lighter and makes it a little bit sweeter. I do that in Chilli as well, but not Lasagne.
If DP makes bolognaise he will only use Dolmio and doesnt add even add onions. Mince and sauce doesnt go far, which sounds a little bit like your version. I couldn't get too worked up over them eating it OP, the children were obviously hungry and most children will self regulate when eating. I might be a bit miffed at having to cook something else though, but would just have something easy like a jacket potato. Would probably tell DP he is a git for not saving me any.

mathanxiety · 01/10/2021 03:10

If they cleaned their plates, then surely it wasn't too much food?

I would expect a 500g pack of mince to make 4 adult portions.
My mother used to try to feed three children plus dad about this much mince (in bolognese and other guises) and it wasn't enough.

And the OP said half a pack of pasta - so about half a pound dry. This isn't enough for four either.

This is how to make bolognese.
DriftingBlue · 01/10/2021 03:14

If they ate it all, it wasn’t too much food. The vast majority of children will only eat regular food until they are full. Treats are a different matter. Growing bodies need fuel.

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 01/10/2021 03:18

@MrsFlinch

To be fair. It's traditionally made with carrots and celery!

It was just everything included as a whole that made me chuckle!

I did know that carrots were used but honestly had no idea about celery, maybe because I absolutely hate celery so my mum would never use it in cooking, also never had a bolognese in a restaurant that included celery or even carrot for that matter!

People acting like celery is a normal ingredient have got me so confused.

My Italian ancestors would be turning in their graves. TURNING, I tell you!

Hopeisnotastrategy · 01/10/2021 03:24

@StellaCinnamon

Can someone give me a good Bolognese recipe? I’m looking for a new one!
Take your pick!

🤣🤣🤣

AlternativePerspective · 01/10/2021 03:38

I don’t agree that “if they ate it all then it wasn’t too much.” People use this line constantly to excuse greed in e.g. teenagers who eat a 12 pack of crisps plus biscuits plus chocolate and then a Big Mac. Nobody actually needs to eat a massive portion. The more you eat, the more you can eat.

OP said that he served the kids ll the bolognese, so 500G between them, and they had half a pack of pasta between the three of them.

Depending on the pack size, that would either be 250G or 500G between them, which is also too much. You certainly don’t need 150g plus of pasta in one sitting each.

As for the posters saying that a 500G pack of mince plus tomatoes/onion etc isn’t that much, even on its own, a 500G pack of mince would make 4 quarter pounder burgers. Do people really think that half a lb of meat would be acceptable for an 8 year old?

BritWifeInUSA · 01/10/2021 03:41

@LemonSherbetFancies

Was just beef mince, chopped tomatoes and some red onion
That’s not Bolognese.
HeronLanyon · 01/10/2021 03:47

If it were me I’d think - ok I should have told dp that I was having some too so ‘don’t serve it all to dgc’ - leave some for me when I get home.
I wouldn’t worry too much - he served what he thought was right for the two and they ate it. Did you join him and have pesto with your pasta in the end ? Or something easy - not sure why you would have to cook again for yourself ?
Lesson learned - next time actually tell the person serving how far you need something to stretch.
Even if it was a lot for their age he didn’t think so and they ate it. A one off massive meal (if it was) won’t harm them.

Lovinglavidaloca · 01/10/2021 03:49

I think people are thinking that in this particular situation they must have just been really hungry @AlternativePerspective. I get what you’re saying and I’m certain that the majority of us are probably eating portions much larger than we should but it’s unlikely that two children of that age would eat a huge portion of (somewhat uninspiring sounding) spaghetti bolognese for any reason other than being hungry!

I’m definitely starting to wonder if I am under feeding my children now though!!

mathanxiety · 01/10/2021 04:00

@AlternativePerspective
(1) It wasn't junk that they were mindlessly scoffing. It wasn't bolognese either, but heyho..

(2) 'Massive portion' is in the eye of the beholder.
Kids who are simply not hungry won't eat something like the 'non-bolognese' they were served.

500g of mince ends up as a good deal less after the water has evaporated from the meat. If the OP also strained off the fat, we are looking at a loss of up to a quarter of the original weight.
The combined cooked weight of whatever number of burgers you made from 500g would not equal the raw weight.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 01/10/2021 04:23

500g mince does for 4 of us, 2 adults and 2 kids (one teen).
So yes, it was too much for 2 smaller children.
I'd be pissed off too.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/10/2021 05:33

@Minfilia

500g mince?

Not to be a competitive mumsnet undereater but bulked out with a shedload of veg, we can get 6 portions. So if that was given to two young kids then yes that’s far too much!

Me too, grated carrot, onions, extra tinned toms, 500 grams mince will go to 6 portions here.
Biscoffee · 01/10/2021 05:37

Op, I have many grandchildren and if this had happened in my house Id laugh about it and it would go down in the future as the day the boys ate all the dinner. In fact I’d probably even tell them they’d need bigger shoes to go home in and a pair of grandads trousers.

Rejoice in the boys, fill your heart with the joy of them and know how lucky you are to have them round your table.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 01/10/2021 05:40

If the small grandkids ate the lot, I would suggest it would never have fed four people.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 01/10/2021 05:49

What a loads of pretentious petit bourgeois bollocks on this thread. It's a fucking midweek family meal, make it how you bloody like. Authenticity my arse.

InkyPinkyParlezVous · 01/10/2021 05:55

12 portions out of one pack of mince. The food based ridiculousness knows no end.
