To think this is far too much food?

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 22:42

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

It's not shocking exactly really is it. They liked it they ate it husband should have saved you some tell him off for not doing that but I wouldn't get worked up over the fact they had a slightly bigger portion than normal so what they were probably hungry better to be full than starving move on

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 02/10/2021 21:11

Not sure it's considered any harder to throw some mince, an onion and chopped tomatoes in a pan than it is to boil the pasta and serve it.
@youvegottenminuteslynn, yes, we are very privileged to have access to calcium. We self-flagellate night and day in a small effort to make up for it.

@EspressoDoubleShot, of course we do an incantation. What do you take us for, heathens? I've researched an authentic Neanderthal chant, actually.
I bet you researched that on the internet didn't you? So very, very wasteful. We only do our research at the library so as not to increase our electricity use. We walk there obviously and for every minute we do research we do another minute of voluntary reading to local children. Community is so important to us.

Is this a joke?

If the sexes were reversed and a husband was saying because he’d boiled pasta he’d done equivalent work to his wife who had made the bolognese from scratch, he’d be laughed out of the room.

JonSnowIsALoser · 02/10/2021 21:15

It's not the portion size I'd worry about - my skinny 9-year-old has been eating adult portions fir some time now. What's annoying is hus lack of consideration for you and not leaving any food for you. Saying to the kids "let's leave some food for grandma, she'll be hungry when she gets back" would be a nice lesson in caring for people other than themselves.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 02/10/2021 21:16

From scratch Grin It's a bolognese, and not a very good one by the sounds of it.

It’s far more work that boiling pasta, shit or not.
JesusIsAnyNameFree · 02/10/2021 21:22

"Far more work" my arse.

You are honestly trying to argue boiling pasta is the same as making a bolognese? Really?

Well the kids enjoyed it Grin
JesusIsAnyNameFree · 02/10/2021 21:27

@PurpleDaisies

Chopping an onion, frying some mince and dumping chopped tomatoes on top takes less than 10 in total. Then you walk away from it, except for coming back and stir what, every 20 mins? So I am arguing that doing that is not "far more work" than to heat the shit up, boil pasta and serve it.

Wazzzzzzzup · 02/10/2021 21:28

Spag fight 😁

JacketPotatoQueen · 02/10/2021 21:31

@Innovationstandard

I can get at least 12 portions out of that maybe more.

12???? wtaf?? Who are you, The Borrowers!!

This made me laugh!!

And agree, we would no way get 12 portions from that.

HarrisMcCoo · 02/10/2021 21:39

Had the grandkids not eaten all day?

Came for the OP. Stayed for the responses.

This is gold.

Feeasco · 02/10/2021 22:06

500g feeds 4 if us comfortably. A lot just for two, but they were obviously hungry kids. Not your husbands fault.
Also, it is quite a compliment- nothing worse than when someone does not eat your food.
If you were tired perhaps your husband could have made something?
I would have made something simple.
Its It's just one night.

Crazycrazylady · 02/10/2021 22:17

Lol at the person who says she gets "12 portions our of 500g mince" !! That's 40g of mince per person.. I'm sure your dinner parties are a ball😳😳😳

I hate this competitive under eating thing. On Mumsnet that some people seem to perpetuate."oh no I could possibly have a second lettuce leaf!"

Most recipe books say to allow 1/4 pound per portion so according to that, 200 g should have been left over but to be fair I've often eaten more that that when hungry.
I'm not sure I'd get worked up about ti to post though .

Winecrispschocolatecats · 02/10/2021 23:04

If they ate the lot, clearly what you'd prepared wasn't enough to feed 4. Growing kids can eat an alarming amount of food - my DC (11 & 12) eat far more than the adults 😬. Perhaps your DH could have used a little less bolognese and a bit more pasta, but even then it would be hard to see how the remainder would stretch to feed two adults. Next time maybe use the 750g packet of mince & pad out with lots of salad and garlic bread.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 02/10/2021 23:43

@RahRahRa

I batch cook my bolognaise using 500g mince, 4 tins of tomatoes and loads of veg, sometimes add lentils too…that makes at least 2 meals for a family of 5 plus a bit left over.
So basically a completely different recipe and overall quantity to what OP posted about
ellyeth · 02/10/2021 23:57

I think a standard pack should be enough for 2 adults and two children because there would presumably be a tin of tomatoes added to it also. Then there's the spaghetti as well.

ellyeth · 03/10/2021 00:00

I expect if they were hungry - as they usually are after school - they probably gobbled it down, and when you eat very fast your stomach doesn't register straight away that you are full.

It's probably better not to encourage over eating because the stomach will adapt to bigger portions. That's not to say that children should be given miniscule portions but not as much as an adult would eat.

Mollymoostoo · 03/10/2021 00:06

They ate all of that between the 2 of them? I'd be more worried about how they got so hungry. My 9 year old eats Tony portions, no way she would eat the same as 2 adults.

TheChip · 03/10/2021 00:22

They were obviously hoping that the next bite was going to lead them to bolognese. It never did.

gaggleofgeese · 03/10/2021 01:14

You've all lost the plot! Are you all drinking?
