To think this is far too much food?

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 22:42

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

This is one of the more baffling threads I've seen. I don't think it's a crazy amount- it depends what else they've eaten that day, how active they've been and how much they eat on a regular basis. Better eating a proper meal than a load of junk.

I'd be hungry as an adult to only have a quarter of a pack tbh.

Kassiopeia · 02/10/2021 17:42

@myadhdusername. Maybe it was DP's lack consideration the OP was hurt by rather than overfeeding grandkids. The OP said she was late home from work so I can understand her not wanting to have to cook two meals and to see the food she cooked disappearing like that and having to start again must have been quite annoying. Even if it was 200g mince that is plenty for 4 bowls of pasta, Brits always put too much meat in the sauce and pile too much sauce on pasta.

Florajane69 · 02/10/2021 17:48

Pour yourself a large glass of red and insist DP knocks you up a little something- why should you be the one who cooks?

I'm with Florajane. He served the food planned for all of them that evening, he does the evening food for the adults when kids in bed. Everyone happy.

I must say if OP didn't eat until now, I don't think the wine is the best idea😂
CambsAlways · 02/10/2021 18:08

If they are the lot then obviously wasn’t too much

lucybluebella26 · 02/10/2021 18:09

@myadhdusername

If they ate it all then wasn’t too much.

Most grandmothers would give their grandkids their last baked bean! Not sure what your situation is but getting worked up enough to post on here because your grandkids ate your bolognese is … odd.

This, 100% this. If both kids ate it all then they were obviously hungry.
Carriecakes80 · 02/10/2021 18:11

I guess if money is tight then I understand your upset, if not however, you're their nan...can't you be a bit gracious, kids get hungry sometimes, they are growing constantly, and maybe it just shows how delicious your cooking was! :-)

jillb55 · 02/10/2021 18:12

I am wondering why you have to cook (again) after a day at work when your DP has been at home?

peridito · 02/10/2021 18:15

Early on in the thread OP explained that her husband has RA and that he doesn't/can't cook .

Toomuchtrouble4me · 02/10/2021 18:18

I think that your other half ate some too and is for whatever reason scared to tell you.

mazmum21987 · 02/10/2021 18:20

Sorry but why isn’t it appropriate? It’s also not appropriate for children to be hungry. If they are that much then they were hungry. Surely it’s better they are what was given to them rather than it being given to them and they waste it by not eating it. To be honest usually 500g feed my family of 4 but I fill it out with more veg. I think the issue here is more he didn’t save you any and you got home late, hungry and were annoyed your dinner had gone rather, than how much the children ate. My 7 year can easily polish off an adults sized portion and extras of some of his favourite meals. Take it as a compliment they obviously like your meals!

mazmum21987 · 02/10/2021 18:20

Sorry ate not are 🤦🏼‍♀️

lljkk · 02/10/2021 18:21

Am I the only one wondering if OP is out of touch with children's appetites. My elderly ILs are always astonished at how much we & our DC eat. They just forget how much younger people eat.

I tried to calc calories & came up with the kids may have had 900-1200 kcal each (250g mince + small portion of pasta). It is a lot but not astounding for their age.

Draggondragon · 02/10/2021 18:23

I can't believe how many kilowatts of brain juice have been used up in this thread by people analysing a meal someone on the internet cooked. I would have just called a deliveoo, it's not like food isn't available. There are going to be so many middle class obese young adults in a few years, rebelling against having their food intake regulated by nervy performance mums. As soon as they hit university, it will be all cola and pot noodles Grin

Hammy65 · 02/10/2021 18:30

They were hungry! Obviously your food was yummy 😋! You should be pleased they’ve enjoyed it. 😁

Sk8ermum3000 · 02/10/2021 18:30

You need to worry when the kids aren’t eating. I’d take the compliment and think ‘job done’.

SurferRona · 02/10/2021 18:42

@ZenNudist

I know you didn't specify exactly what size saucepan but we aren't talking milk pan and most pans up from the milk pan would hold more bolognaise than 2 portions.

500g mince will do us many meals. I use a large onion, 2 carrots and 3 sticks of celery plus at least the tomato tin filled with water, maybe mushrooms. I sometimes add spinach but only when serving. I grate cheese on top. My spaghetti portion size for kids that age is about one adult portion to share between 2. I can get at least 12 portions out of that maybe more.

How they managed to put away a whole pan I don't know. Even of your basic 1 onion plus tin tomato.

12 portions or more from 500g?!!!!

How many meals from an average sized chicken? WinkGrin

And decent SB needs garlic and chicken livers or anchovies in there too.

Ari202 · 02/10/2021 18:45

Maybe mine with nothing but chopped tomatoes and some chopped red onion is as disgusting and tasteless as it sounds and your husband threw it in the bin and pretended they ate it.

Ari202 · 02/10/2021 18:45

*mince

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 02/10/2021 18:56

Oh god, such bullshit.

SomebodysMum · 02/10/2021 18:56

500g mince between 2 people is shocking but between 3 people becomes absolutely fine.

Also I would like to know how big the packet of pasta was. Standard sized or????

EspressoDoubleShot · 02/10/2021 19:01

Yes but I love a mn food thread all the competitive munchkin size portions. The magic mince and 8day chicken. Utterly compelling And the obligatory gratuitous mention that their husband is tall & sporty with huuuuge appetite and their children are slim(always…)
Immaculatemisconception · 02/10/2021 19:02

I don't understand your problem @LemonSherbetFancies. Surely if children of that age ate the food, then it wasn't too much?

Get your DP to nip out and get you a takeaway and.........breathe.

Clymene · 02/10/2021 19:03

Well it's depressing more than anything. Imagine your dinner being 40g of mince fried with some onion and tomatoes and a bit of pasta.

There's nothing admirable about it
